World Bosses will be part of Diablo IV for the first time in the franchise's history. These bosses require a large amount of players to be defeated. Harder versions of these world bosses that you fight with an arranged party are being discussed.
In Diablo IV, World Bosses are encountered in open-world areas, and consist of multi-stage battles. Players have to work together to defeat them. When a World Boss fight occurs, the camera zooms back, in order to convey the full scale of the monster.
Players will be able to use mounts to traverse across long distances. World Bosses are encountered in the open-world areas. The open-world is fixed, and not randomized. While the game has shared-world elements, it is not an MMO. Towns may become social hubs for a player once key story elements have been completed. Roads link various areas—sticking to the roads allows players to bypass monsters, while heading off the path will take them towards higher monster densities. Each zone has associated renown that the player can earn. The campaign is expected to take 45–50 hours to complete on a first playthrough.
The workaround for killing a world boss multiple times in rapid succession has been removed.
If you got your hands on our BlizzCon demo or watched our gameplay trailer closely, you may have noticed a massive new addition: Ashava. Ashava, the first of our new World Bosses, is an ancient demon lurking below Sanctuary who will take more than just one mighty hero to fell.
Not only will you need to group up (or at least join several other players) to challenge Ashava, but you’ll want to pay close attention to her abilities and carefully make use of your skills. Avoid her deadly strikes with the baseline Evade ability and leverage the new Stagger mechanic in your favor. Rather than having bosses be immune to crowd control effects, they can instead become Staggered, losing some of their capabilities or powering down once a certain threshold has been met. When battling Ashava, Staggering her will shatter her arm blades and greatly diminish the range of her whirlwind attack, making her a little less deadly for you and your friends.

Double Swipe | Carves the ground in a 360 degree sweep, then carves again right after in a 180 degree sweep. Wide attack, massive damage. When you see this start up animation, run! Remember, there are 2 attacks, so do not jump back in too early. |
Leap | Jumps and tackles you, which can knock you down. She dips into a pouncing stance before leaping. Use evade to move anywhere but in front of her. |
Ground Pound | Pounds the ground, then swipes behind shortly afterwards, hitting front and back. Pull effect and massive damage. The pound itself is no threat. Use this animation to evade out the way. |
Acid spit | Vomits 3 blobs of Poison on the battlefield. Stays for 20 seconds. |
Bite | Melee range. Bites 4 times consecutively, with the last bite having a bigger animation and dealing more damage. |

Chest Swing | Thrusts the treasure chest forward, then swings it around in a 360 area of effect attack. The chest thrust itself is a minor threat, but the swing deals massive damage. You can avoid the swing by standing in between the chain and the chest, or by standing at a great distance. |
Mallet Slam | Raises mallet, then slams the ground, causing a huge shockwave throughout the area. This by itself is a minor threat, but when there are pillars around (see below), the shockwave causes them to explode, dealing large amounts of damage. Pillars activated by the Mallet Slam explode after 3 seconds, enough time to get out of the way. The destroyed pillars leave a puddle of gold dust on the ground, dealing damage over time if stood in. |
Mallet Thrust | Sends a rocky shockwave through the ground in a cone. Deals massive damage and has a wide range. There is a wind up period before he does this. Use this brief period to evade anywhere but in front of him. |
Portal Charge | Summons a portal that he jumps into, then reappears after a few seconds charging out of a different portal randomly on the battlefield. When charging into the portal, he deals minor damage if you are in the way. Charging out of the next portal hits you for massive damage and can knockdown. |
Cleave | Swings mallet around him 180 degrees from the starting point. Deals moderate damage. |
Gold Vomit | Vomits gold beneath him in a large area. Standing in the gold deals damage over time. |
Ground Stomp | Pulls you in with a wind up and deals minor damage. |
Pillars | Summons pillars that can obstruct movement and block attacks. Pillars are often used as a setup for Mallet Slam, which triggers them to explode for massive damage. |
Wandering Death is a world boss in Diablo 4. Location: it can be found in special areas of the world as you are progressing from region to region. This massive behemoth is equipped with many dangerous abilities looking to flatten any heroes that dare to challenge them. Because any World Boss is very dangerous, teaming up with other players is absolutely necessary. When slain, loot drops alongside a special item called Scattered Prism, used to add sockets to certain slots of gear. These are only found by defeating World Bosses.

Death Beam | Channels 2 beams from hands while rotating slowly. Channels more beams simultaneously as health depletes. Does massive damage. Stay between the beams as he rotates. |
Death Crater | Creates a crater that explodes and deal damage after 5 seconds. Can block attacks and trap you inside. Creates more craters simultaneously as health depletes. Does great damage. Evade as soon as you see them spawn before the walls go up. Can break through the walls with attacks or movement skills. |
Death Grasp | Shoots 2 hooks underground, then raises up and retracts – pulling you in. Shoots more hooks simultaneously as health depletes. Does great amounts of damage. Keep moving when you see the ground change colors as if it’s been combed to avoid the attack. |
Death Pound | Slams the ground twice in front of him, then slams the ground behind him with both hands. This sends a wave of multiple spike lines. Uses more hands to cover more ground as health depletes. Deals massive damage. The pounds at lower health are more dangerous than the spikes that come after. Lookout for the spikes at high health, and be careful of the pounds at low health. Knowing which is more dangerous is key here. |
Death Shout | Shouts and sends shockwaves radiating from the body that knocks back. Increases in distance and damage as health depletes. |
Death Tornadoes | Spawns tornadoes that ravage the battlefield. Comes in 3’s. Spawns more of them simultaneously as health depletes. |
A World Bosses health bar has 4 breakpoints. Once a breakpoint is reached, the red arrow flips up and turn grey. This indicates that you are in the next phase of the fight, while also dropping multiple healing vials. Each phase becomes increasingly more challenging.
Immediately beneath the health bar is a stagger bar that fills when Crowd Control (CC) is dealt. Once full, the World Boss is rendered helpless for 12 seconds. Use this time to unleash as much hell as you possibly can. Each World Boss also has a unique mechanic in addition to being staggered. The Ashava World Boss arm blade breaks permanently when staggered, making her weaker for the rest of the fight.
Daring wanderers seeking a sizeable challenge should look no further—Ashava, a whirlwind of pestilence, has recently emerged in Fractured Peaks. Journal entries recounting sightings of this gargantuan plague bearer make note of her two massive forearm blades and ability to coat the ground in a viscous poison. Her blades, which can cleanly cut through stone and flesh alike, are to be feared. Records appear to mention a way to weaken Ashava, but unfortunately that portion of the page has corroded away.
It is thought that one wanderer alone cannot bring this beast to its knees. Come prepared for an intense fight and recruit your friends and other players to pursue the ultimate glory of conquering one of the Burning Hells’ most heinous creations to date. Should you find a path to victory, a sizeable loot drop awaits.
Here’s when you’ll have an opportunity to combat Ashava during the Open Beta and Early Access weekends:
