There are many currency items in Diablo 4, such as Gold, Runes, Premium Currency, Obols, Red Dust, Cinders, and Shards of Hatred. Players also tend to use Perfect Gems as very valuable currency. Gold

Gold is the main currency in Diablo 4. Prices of items and repairs are expressed in gold generally. Here is the guide for getting more Diablo 4 Gold.

Gold is used in almost everything in Diablo 4; collect as much as possible! The gold currency is found from monsters and chests across Sanctuary, or by selling items and legendary aspects. It is a very important resource that is used in almost everything:

  • All gear related activities (buying, upgrading, etc.)
  • All Crafting recipes
  • Extracting and Applying Legendary Powers
  • Removing Skill Points in the Skill Tree
  • Trading
  • Many more…

Runes

Runes are a type of socketable item. The player can insert them into socketed items to add many magical attributes. The type of attribute added depends on the socketed item.

There are two types of Runes in Diablo IV, Condition Runes and Effect Runes. Any Condition Rune can be combined with any Effect Rune to create a Rune Word.

Runes and Runewords will not be available at launch and are something the developers plan to return to in the future.

Runewords

If the player puts certain combinations of Runes in the correct order into an item with exactly that number of sockets and of the correct item type, the item's name will change into a "unique" name, displayed in gold, and the item will acquire extra powers, depending on the "rune word" that was used. The benefits of using a Rune Word is that you can make the Rune Word's magical bonuses apply to any type of item allowed with the proper number of sockets.

The Socketed Item type must be the correct item type for the formula. If the formula requires a sword, the formula will not work if you use an axe or spear.

Rune Words do not work if the required number of sockets is not equal to the number present on the item. If this were so, then it could be possible that multiple runewords could be socketed in the same item, possibly making it overpowered.

The Runes socketed must also be arranged in the correct order. Otherwise you will only get the effects of the individual runes without the bonus.

Premium Currency

Players can spend Premium Currency on cosmetics offered in the shop.

  • The Battle Pass has both free rewards (cosmetics, premium currency, and gameplay boosts) and paid rewards (cosmetics and premium currency only).
  • The Shop sells cosmetics for Premium Currency. Cosmetics give players even more options to customize the visual appearance of their characters. Nothing offered in the Shop grants a direct or indirect gameplay advantage. So, while many of these may look like powerful pieces of gear, they have no in-game stats.

Obols

Gambling at the Purveyor of Curiosities. Obols are used as the currency to purchase randomized items by their type at varying prices. You can obtain Obols by completing Local Events in the world. The best items in the game will be available through gambling.

The Purveyor of Curiosities is your one-stop gambling shop in Diablo 4! Here you can use Obols as currency to acquire items for a piece of equipment of your choice. This currency is often rewarded from Local Events and inside Dungeons when you happen upon a Cursed Chest event.

Red Dust

Red Dust is a type of currency in Diablo IV. Red Dust is obtained from Seeds of Hatred. Unlike the seeds, Red Dust is not dropped by the player if they are killed in Fields of Hatred. Red Dust can be spent at PvP cosmetic and mount vendors for ornamental rewards.

Seeds of Hatred can be converted to Red Dust at the Altar of Extraction. Once converted, Red Dust cannot be stolen from you if you are killed in PvP combat.

Cinders

Cinders is a new currency that can be spent to open Helltide Chests scattered throughout the respective region.

Helltide Chests boast bountiful boons exclusive to a singular item slot, such as Torso, Legs, or Two-Handed Weapon. But be wary in hoarding your Cinders—should you fall in battle, they’ll drop and must be reclaimed.

As you cull the monstrosities inhabiting a Helltide, they’ll potentially drop Cinders.

Shards of Hatred

Shards of Hatred are a form of currency in Diablo IV. They are encountered in Fields of Hatred, where they can be obtained by slaying enemy players and monsters, along with opening chests and completing events. The shards must be brought to a purification event in order to turn them into usable currency. The shards can be used in small encampments found around the Fields. They can also be used with special vendors found only in the fields.

Purifying the shards will alert enemy players. Purified shards are the player's, but unpurified shards are fair game.

Other items used as money/currency

Players tend to use Perfect Gems as very valuable currency. These items are useful in many ways - most notably for Horadric Cube combinations and socketed weapons and armor.
