Dungeons D4

Dungeons are a cornerstone of the Diablo universe. D4 has no shortage of them to explore. Dungeons and their recommended Level to complete are displayed on your map. These are tight, tense instances where determination and skill will guide you to victory over whatever hell you discover within. Dungeons are a great place to put your skills to the test while also racking up useful gear for even more threatening encounters, such as world bosses.

We’ve got almost 150 dungeons in the game. Whether it’s new items or new dungeons or new Paragon Boards, every single time you come back to play Diablo IV there’s going to be new stuff for you to experience.

Diablo 4 Dungeons

Explore Sanctuary – Discover the world of Sanctuary as you battle through its expansive lands. Join fellow adventurers, retake besieged towns, delve into corrupted dungeons, and uncover lost secrets as you fight for the fate of the world.

The endless battle between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells rages on as chaos threatens to consume Sanctuary. With ceaseless demons to slaughter, countless Abilities to master, nightmarish Dungeons, and Legendary loot, this vast, open world brings the promise of adventure and devastation. Survive and conquer darkness – or succumb to the shadows.

Dungeons remain randomized, similar to previous titles. New features have been implemented, such as seamless floor transitions, as well as transition scenes. These are scenes that allow the developers to connect two different tile-sets together in the same dungeon, while keeping it randomized.

Over 150 dungeons will feature in the game. Some dungeons are tied to the game's main storyline, others to side quests. However, the majority of dungeons are self-contained in terms of plot. Some "mini dungeons" exist that are only one room. Completing a dungeon grants the player renown.

Some strongholds become dungeons after being cleared out the first time. After completing the game's main quest, players will gain access to "Nightmare Dungeons." These are remixed versions of dungeons, filled with stronger monsters, new objectives, and other afflictions. Upon completion, each dungeon grants the player an aspect; each aspect is unique to the dungeon it is found in.

Dungeon Rewards

Similar to any other activity in Diablo 4, completing a Dungeon grants your character Experience and Gold. Dungeons have the second-highest Renown reward in the game: 20 points on completion. These 3 rewards make Dungeons a prime target for you to farm already, but there is more.

Most Dungeons unlock a Legendary Aspect in the Codex of Power, which you can put on a rare item. The imbued power can make a big difference to your characters' power, but is also costly to use. Focus on those that grant generic or class specific aspects that empower your build! 115 Aspects can be found across all Dungeons in Diablo 4:

Objectives & Boss Fight

Most Dungeons have 2-3 core objectives mixed with some quest steps that tell you to go to certain spots within. The majority of Dungeons finish in an epic battle against a Boss (more on them later). Here is a sample list of objectives we have seen in the Press Preview:

  • Collect Animus from certain monsters
  • Find and return a Bloodstone
  • Find and destroy Constructs
  • Defeat all enemies in the area
  • Activate the Levers

Nightmare Dungeons

We’ve crafted a difficulty of Diablo dungeons straight out of your nightmares. No, really! Nightmare-difficulty dungeons in Diablo IV unlock upon locating your first Nightmare Sigil. Each sigil corresponds to a specific dungeon somewhere within Sanctuary. These sigils will add special modifiers to their dungeon, increasing the ferocity of the hell-servants waiting for you inside and providing higher-rarity loot. Through completing Nightmare dungeons, you will recover even more powerful sigils, introducing increasingly death-defying modifications and challenges for you to overcome. As you progress into higher and more challenging World Tiers, new Nightmare Dungeons will become available for you to explore.

Nightmare Dungeons are one of the many endgame systems in Diablo 4. You can craft Nightmare Sigils at the Occultist, which create an empowered version of certain Dungeons when activated with much harder enemies. The higher Tier you go, the harder they get. A sneak peek into the Achievement System tells us that only a small percentage are in the Nightmare Dungeon pool. Each Sigil tier has its own list of possible ones:

How to Unlock Dungeons

Some Dungeons can only be entered once a Stronghold has been cleared. In Fractured Peaks, 1 is unlocked in Nostrava and 2 in Malnok. Others are placed in locked areas and become available once you have progressed through the main story far enough.

  • Dungeons are one of the most important activities. They grant you 20 Renown points and access to legendary powers.
  • 2-3 main objectives have to be completed to finish a Dungeon. You'll often face a Boss at the end.
  • Later on, you can find the ultimate challenge in Nightmare Dungeons. Face your fears!
  • Only 1-2 monster families can appear, which are static in each Dungeon.
  • Some entrances are locked behind Strongholds or the main quest line.

Tips

A few facts about dungeons in Diablo IV:

  • Going from one level to the next within a dungeon will not require any loading screens, making the dungeon crawling experience more seamless.
  • You will encounter random events in these dungeons — for instance, destroying an altar that is guarded by monsters.
  • Actions in one part of the dungeon can affect what happens in the next.
  • Each dungeon also features a different objective to set them apart from each other. For example, you might need to slay all enemies while being chased by elites as you progress.
  • Progressing the objective will make the dungeon more dangerous, but will also increase the rewards.
  • You will be able to farm for item types, e.g. Gloves, in specific dungeons. The dungeons that drop a specific item type will change regularly.

Strongholds & Dungeons

As you navigate around, taking notice of the wounds Lilith’s return has inflicted upon the land, you’ll encounter a new type of evil: Strongholds. These are locations the Burning Hell’s minions have claimed for themselves, casting a shadow of darkness upon them for you to lift. Clearing out Strongholds will bring about permanent change to these locations, repopulating them with non-demonic life and rewarding you with loot. Clearing a Stronghold may also reveal new dungeons to delve into and other hidden experiences. Speaking of dungeons, Diablo IV contains almost 150 detailed dungeons—close-quarters experiences for you to root out evil throughout the main questline and beyond. Each time you step foot into a dungeon, its layout and distribution of adversaries will vary, keeping the challenge alive while still allowing you to strategize a way to overcome the dangers within.

Dungeons of Sanctuary

Brian Fletcher: Dungeons are still that randomized content that you know and love from previous Diablo titles. However, we added new and exciting features that allow us to make even more dungeons across the world of Sanctuary than ever before. In order to support over 150+ dungeons, we’ve had to shift the way we make environment art so that it's flexible enough to be used in multiple locations and not just in a single dungeon. We break it all down into what we call tile-sets. We would like to share with you a handful of our tile-sets, and a few ways we can mix and match them with props, interactives, and lighting to create dungeons that are varied, handcrafted and yet procedurally created. It takes a lot of hard work from many teams to make a Dungeon, and we are proud to show you what we have been working on.

Delving Dank Dungeons

Dungeons will be separate, instanced experiences. While you won’t see wandering adventurers alongside you as you delve an abandoned ruin, you can opt to bring up to a party of four players in to tackle tougher challenges for greater rewards.

As has become hallmark to Diablo, Dungeons are randomized experiences, including both their layouts and the events that might occur within them. They can be interior or exterior landscapes, may mix and match between different tilesets, and offer totally seamless exploration; moving from one level or scene to another is now a natural, loading screen-free process.

We’re also introducing Dungeon Objectives, which help guide your adventure and offer greater rewards and increased danger. As you complete Dungeon Objectives, the goals you have will continue to update, and the Dungeon itself might respond by sending tougher enemies and challenges your way. Each Objective has been custom designed to give their Dungeons their own identity and character, and there are hundreds of dungeons with tons of events, ensuring each delve is a unique one!

We’re also evolving endgame Dungeons by building them around three pillars: variety, strategic depth, and player agency. One new system we’re sharing today is what we’re calling Keyed Dungeons. By finding a key out in the world of Sanctuary, you can upgrade an existing Dungeon into a special endgame version with increased difficulty, greater rewards, and dungeon affixes. Between the natural randomization, knowing the strength and affixes you’re going to face, and choosing your skills and equipment in advance, we’re hitting all three of these pillars for a unique, ever-evolving endgame.
