1. Salvaging items

Whenever you salvage an item, you unlock its transmog and can freely dye it to whatever color you want.

Players can also use the Blacksmith to salvage unwanted items, receiving crafting materials in return that can be used to upgrade other items. The higher quality the item, the rarer the crafting material received.

Salvaging an item also unlocks its transmog, allowing you to use that item’s look in the future and dye it different colors.

2. Repairing items

A player’s gear will degrade after use or upon dying (10% duration penalty) and needs to be repaired. The Blacksmith repairs items for Gold, with the expense scaling with the item’s power.

An items Durability decreases on death by 10% of the total durability. When an item's Durability reaches zero it is unusable and must be repaired. The more Durability lost on an item, the more expensive it is to repair.

3. Upgrade Weapons and Armor

The Blacksmith can upgrade your gear a certain number of times for the cost of crafting materials and gold. This boosts the item’s base stats and affixes.

Diablo 4’s new Blacksmith NPC is found in larger towns (e.g., Kyovashad) and can be used to upgrade an item’s base stats and affixes. Upgrading items costs Gold and crafting materials (unknown at this point). Also, an item can only be upgraded a “certain number of times.”

See the list below for each upgrade material and what they’re used for:

  • Iron Chunk Tier 1 – Weapon, Jewelry
  • Rawhide Tier 1 – Armor
  • Silver Ore Tier 2 – Weapon, Jewelry
  • Superior Leather Tier 2 – Armor
  • Veiled Crystal Tier 3 – Weapon, Armor, Jewelry
  • Baleful Fragment Tier 4 – Weapon
  • Coiling Ward Tier 4 – Armor
  • Abstruse Sigil Tier 4 – Jewelry
  • Forgotten Soul Tier 5 – Weapon, Armor, Jewelry (Sacred, Ancestral)*

* These are listed in the Salvage menu and seen in the final upgrade material cost but we have not seen the material in-game.

4. Help produce top-tier items

According to Rhykker, the Blacksmith will play a pivotal role in the crafting chain to produce some of the best items in the game (other than Uniques). He predicts players will use the following process:

  • Hunt or trade for a Rare item with great base stats and affixes
  • Use the Occultist to improve one of the item’s affixes
  • Upgrade the item the max amount of times at the Blacksmith
  • Apply a Legendary Aspect to the item, upgrading it to Legendary

5. Transmogs

Salvaging items is required to unlock their appearance for transmogs for the Wardrobe.

6. Marking Items

Players can mark items as "Junk" which makes it easier to salvage the useless items quickly at the Blacksmith.

How to Unlock Blacksmith?

When your character reaches level 10, you receive a Priority Quest objective to go and see Zivek the Blacksmith in Kyovashad. You’re given the task of upgrading a piece of gear, and in return you’re awarded experience.

But the true reward is meeting the NPC you very well may spend the most time with as you progress through the world of Sanctuary. Upgrading your gear and salvaging extra loot for materials are core progression loops.

In addition, with every death you lose 1/10th of your gear’s Durability. Once this hits 0, your item’s bonuses are partly disabled and you are significantly weaker, so keeping them in good condition is important.

After this intro, Blacksmiths can be found all throughout the world in various outposts, towns and cleared Strongholds so you don’t always have to come back to Kyovashad for these tasks.

A character upgrading a piece of armor at the Blacksmith

The Blacksmith repairs your broken gear, salvages any useless items for valuable crafting materials and upgrades your gear’s Item Power to increase their stats! You are going to spend a lot of your down-time at the Blacksmith, clearing out your piles of loot while upgrading any new pieces of gear you come across in your adventures. Your gear also takes a Durability hit whenever you die, so coughing up a bit of Gold gets everything back in working order!

The Blacksmith’s UI menu includes a “Modified item preview” that shows the item’s new stats post-upgrade. This may be used to evaluate whether some upgrades are worth their cost.
