Diablo 4 World Tiers & Difficulty

World Tiers exist to make sure that the difficulty of the world stays on pace with the power of your character level. The difficulty can be changed when entering the game or at the World Tier Statue in major towns. You need to prove yourself to unlock World Tiers 3, 4, and 5, by completing a specific dungeon (with a difficult boss at the end) to access that more challenging content.

World Tier 1 and 2 will be available from Level 1. World Tier 1 is aimed at players who are new to ARPGs and the franchise, while World Tier 2 is aimed at veterans.

The last World Tier is designed for Level 100 and contains an “extremely difficult” boss at the end. Defeating said boss will get you to the “end of the end-game”.

Diablo shines when you find that sweet spot — oftentimes, you’re slightly underpowered, working hard, and then get an amazing drop. Then, you’re into it, and get another amazing drop and the game becomes too easy, so you need to ratchet up the difficulty, which makes you underpowered again. That cycle is core to the feel of progression in Diablo and we think the World Tiers provide you with that.

World Tiers are the difficulty system of Diablo IV. There are 100 world tiers in the game.

World Tier 1 & 2 are available to players from character level 1. Tier 1 is meant for players who are new to the series and/or want to play the game for its story. Tier 2 is designed for players who want more of a challenge. As players level up, new tiers will be unlocked. Higher tiers grant players access to ancestral items. Certain tiers require defeating a boss to unlock.

The tiers can be changed in-game at World Tier statues in towns.

World Tier System

  • Players will need to complete Capstone dungeons in order to gain access to higher World Tiers
  • The first Capstone dungeon is recommended level 50 - and it's a humbling experience for under-leveled players
  • World Tiers aren't just "more health" or "more damage" - new mechanics, AI, and abilities are unlocked on enemies. The world feels more hostile and aggressive
  • World Tier 3 gives access to Sacred items, World Tier 4 gives access to Ancestral items
  • Sacred tier items will be viable from around level 50 to around level 70 - but that doesn't mean the items will require level 70; they will be level required based off the level your character was when the item dropped
