Ring of MisfortuneUnique Ring 725 Item Power Flavour Text: A seemingly ordinary ring, but wearing it fills you with dread |
We’ve heard the overwhelming community feedback that Unique items aren’t as exciting and impactful as they need to be. In Season of Blood, we’ve done a large design rework on our Unique items and updated nearly all of them in the game. The following is our four-fold strategy to how we’re updating our Unique items currently, and the philosophy we want to adhere to for our Uniques to have special properties in the future. Here are some theoretical examples:
The following are some examples of our updates that you can look forward to finding.
Rain of Arrows Cooldown Reduction has now been added to the Word of Hakan Unique:
The Stat range for Non-Physical Damage here been significantly increased:
Increased Ranks of Death Blow have been added to this Unique items stats:
Unique effects are far more likely to activate more frequently and be more effective:
We sometimes see a Unique with a potentially powerful effect fal l by the wayside due to a lack of specific stats that are too important to ignore. In this vein, you’ll see that our Unique items will have key stats for the builds they fit in far more often, including powerful new or thematic stats that relate to their effect. We’re hoping that this will reduce the opportunity cost of playing with these items, which should entice players to try them out more often.
You can equip multiple different uniques and gain each of their benefits.
Unique Items can be found in World Tier 3: Nightmare and even more can be found in World Tier 4: Torment.
Unique Items return in D4. They've been described as "super-charged" versions of Legendaries, and only drop at high levels. They are exceptionally rare, and are designed as "pinnacle items" for specific builds. They cannot be traded.
Powerful, build-changing Unique items can be found in World Tier 3: Nightmare and even more can be found in World Tier 4: Torment.
Uniques are the most powerful items in Diablo IV. With Best-in-Slot attributes and distinctive looks they are reserved for the bravest heroes of Sanctuary.
You can wear multiple different unique items and gain each of their benefits.
Unique Items: Unlike Legendary Items, these rarefied pieces of Gear should be coveted. The bonuses they provide cannot be transferred from one item to another through extraction (more on this below). Dozens of these high-powered, build-changing items will be available at launch, so keep your eyes peeled for the off chance that you may encounter one. Unique Items can only be acquired in Nightmare and Torment World Tiers. Also, treasures from a bygone era have been unearthed in Diablo IV—Unique Items from previous Diablo games, such as Windforce, have returned!
While on Nightmare and Torment difficulty, endgame activities like Nightmare Dungeons, Helltide areas, and the Diablo 4 world bosses all have a chance of dropping a Unique item.
Some Uniques drop from specific bosses. Right now, we know of two: the Mother's Embrace ring that drops after fighting the campaign's final boss, and The Butcher's Cleaver axe that you have a small chance of obtaining after you kill him.
Color: brown
Max affixes: 6 total (5 Regular + 1 Unique)
Uniques contain a Unique affix, which is multiple times more powerful than a regular affix. They typically interact with one or more of a class's skills.
Unique items are very, very rare - and build defining. Their drop rate is the rarest in the game. Regular players can expect a few per Season. They also drop in later stages of the game.
Unique items' stats are fixed, meaning all players will have the same version of the item.
Some Uniques will be class-specific to help fulfill certain fantasies for that class, while others will be equipable by all classes.
Both Sacred Unique items and Ancestral Unique items exist, with the latter being the most powerful (Item Power ~800). They'll have the same affixes as regular Uniques, but higher stats.
Regular and Sacred Unique items begin dropping in World Tier 3. Ancestral Unique items only drop in World Tier 4.
Unique items are making a comeback in a big way in Diablo IV. We’re embracing the fantasy of these build-around items with completely fixed affixes, heavily thematic and usually class-specific powers, and distinctive looks.
Three Unique items available at level 20. A Unique will always appear with the same affixes.
We still like the idea of Mythic items, but we don’t want to create an item quality that invalidates all others, so they’re out for now. One of the things we loved most about them was the promise of getting random legendary powers on an item, so we folded that into our baseline legendary design.
With the addition of the skills and passives tree, primary stat points, and changes to items in Diablo IV, we can’t wait to see all the builds you’ll create. Maybe you’ll focus on skills augmented by Uniques we designed, create something from scratch out of different legendary affixes, discover a creative pairing of primary stats with specific skills, or even incorporate the odd Rare or Magic item to maximize a specific affix to great effect.
Are we going to see big multipliers on Uniques in Diablo IV, similar to Diablo III?
No. Joe Shely explained that they want to "reduce the overall scaling multipliers and damage numbers in combat [in Diablo IV]". Their focus on implementing Legendary powers is to create new builds or to have them change builds. The philosophy of reducing the overall scaling multipliers applies to Legendaries, Uniques, and also Sets (in the future).
Joe Shely added that Sets can be great for having a cohesive look and that they can be excellent for new players that don't want to create their own builds, but they can have the negative effect of simplifying interesting builds that are available by taking up a lot of item slots.
Unique Items are by far the most sought-after, possessing many magical properties that no Magical, Rare, or Crafted Item has. There is usually only one Unique item for every type of weapon and armor in the game. Unique items are denoted by their names being colored gold. Set Items are different from Unique ones, but very similar to them in terms of how they work and rarity.
In earlier versions of Diablo II, if any player in a game had a certain Unique item in their possession, the game would not generate another of it. However, this limitation was revised with one of the patches to the game. It is now possible for the game to generate a Unique item even if someone in the game has it already. But it will not appear more than once in a single play.
Note that items are actually generated during gambling, even if you do not buy them. This means that if a unique appeared in the gambling window, it will not be dropped by enemies until you start a new session. Therefore, it may be advisable to restart your game after spending a significant amount of time gambling.
In Classic Diablo II, Unique items have no experience level requirements. In Lord of Destruction, these items do have determined level requirements, to prevent players from having characters with low levels, but high stats. Also, Exceptional and Elite Uniques each have higher level requirements than their Normal counterparts. Exceptional and Elite Uniques do not appear in Classic Diablo II.
Elite Unique items are somewhat sparse. There are weapon and armor classes that don't have a Unique for every type. For instance, there is no Unique Hydra Edge (Elite Falchion) or Conquest Sword (Elite Broad Sword). However, there are classes of equipment that actually have two Unique items of the same type. There are two Unique Phase Blades (Elite Crystal Sword); Lightsabre and Azurewrath. There are two Unique Scourges (Elite Flail); Horizon's Tornado and Stormlash. There are even two Unique Thunder Mauls (Elite Great Maul); The Cranium Basher and Earth Shifter.
The reason for some of these instances of two Unique Elite items of the same type is because early in the release of Lord of Destruction, Blizzard added Unique Elite weapons and armor that were based on the most famous Unique items in the original Diablo, such as The Cranium Basher maul, Windforce bow, and The Grandfather two-handed sword. Later on, new Elite Unique items were added, and a few of them were of the same types as the returning items from Diablo I.
In Diablo III, Unique items are replaced with legendary items, with only Death's Breath having a unique (teal) level of quality, indicating its special reagent status.
