Diablo 4 Strongholds

Strongholds are a gameplay feature of Diablo IV, centered around co-op play. They have been occupied by demons, and must be cleared out by the player. In some cases, after the stronghold has been purged of enemies, it becomes a player-friendly town. It others, it can become a dungeon. Each stronghold that's cleared grants the player renown.

Stronghold events are marked on the mini-map by a red skull. Strongholds are locations that the Burning Hell's minions claimed for themselves, casting a shadow of darkness for you to lift. Clearing out Strongholds will bring permanent change to the Stronghold, repopulating them with non-demonic life and also rewarding you with loot. Clearing a Stronghold may reveal new dungeons to delve into and other hidden experiences.

Suddenly, all of the marketplaces open up and you now have a blacksmith vendor in a location that previously didn't exist.

1. Nostrava

This Stronghold is located North of Nevesk, the starting location of every Character in Diablo 4. The minimum monster Level is 12. Each house contains an effigy that needs to be destroyed. Be careful, there lies an ambush inside each house! Once the Stronghold's objectives are completed, Malnok becomes an outpost with a Blacksmith, Armor vendor, Jewelry vendor, and a Healer. Two dungeons, Anica's Claim and Remiscar Cavern are located in Malnok, which become unlocked on completion.

Objectives

  1. Search for the source of the storm
  2. Find and slay Ice Clan Stormcallers to stop the blizzard 0/3
  3. Return to the center of Malnok
  4. Kill the remaining Ice Clan
  5. Slay Frosthorn

Chill and Freeze are your main concerns in this Stronghold. Make sure you have an ability that gets you out of crowd controls! Enter the zone and move towards the epicenter of the storm. Once you reach it, 3 icy lines connect the center of the storm with 3 Ice Clan Stormcallers that summon the blizzard. They initially are immune to damage, attack them and an Elite spawns next to them. Killing them turns the Stormcallers vulnerable. Finish them all to interrupt the ritual. Return to the center of the zone and kill all highlighted Ice Clans. Face Frosthorn in an epic 1 vs 1 in the small arena in the center of the zone - HE HURTS!

3. Kor Dragan

This Stronghold is located North of the Fractured Peaks' capital city, Kyovashad. The minimum monster Level is 20. Once the Stronghold's objectives are completed, Kor Dragan once again becomes an abandoned fortress that is haunted by The Gathering Legion Zone Event at times.

Objectives

  1. Investigate Kor Dragan
  2. Purge Kor Dragan of vampiric corruption
  3. Slay the remaining Sanguine Knights
  4. Destroy the Vampiric Aberration to gain access to the Archives
  5. Slay Nilcar

Enter Kor Dragan and witness what vampires have done to this old fortress. There are 3 Vampiric Incubators, each connected to smaller Vampiric Corruptions. The incubators are invulnerable until you destroy the smaller ones. Once an incubator is destroyed, a Sanguine Knight is released. Kill all 3 of them, then head North to the Vampiric Aberration. It is invulnerable until the last incubator is destroyed. Get rid of it and face Nilcar in a hard fight as he summons Elites to aid him in fighting you!

4. Ruins of Qara-Yisu

This was the village of Qara-Yisu, which has fallen into ruin. The people here in the Dry Steppes had the problem that there were bloodthirsty cannibals dwelling nearby and would raid their community. The people had to find a solution because they weren't strong enough to defend themselves. They made a dark bargain with a demon and were able to gather enough power to push out these cannibals and protect their community, but not without great cost.

One of the Strongholds Blizzard has revealed is The Ruins of Qara-Yisu. It's a former town, covered in salt, that's now occupied by monsters and needs cleansing. Each Stronghold will have a distinct storyline and be filled with unique inhabitants.

Stronghold are denoted on the map UI with a red tent icon (note: these UI elements have likely changed since Camps were renamed to Strongholds):

Diablo 4 Strongholds

Once a player cleanses the Stronghold (i.e., defeats all or most of the monsters), the red tent icon will disappear and be replaced with icons showing the Stronghold's reward offerings.

5. Diablo 4 Hope’s Light

Hope’s Light is a Scosglen stronghold in Diablo IV. It is a high level stronghold. Players have to fight their way along the coast to the lighthouse itself. The Drowned are the stronghold’s primary enemy.

Hope's Light is located in the jagged, northern coast of Scosglen. There, an old lighthouse has gone dark, and the player must find a path to it and diagnose why.

The player quickly realizes that the area is inundated with monsters from the Drowned family, undead creatures that have crawled ashore and are outfitted with rusty metal and tattered gear. The path to the lighthouse covers the rocky coast and decrepit, beached ships.

Strongholds Location

Strongholds are locations of importance overrun by enemies, which you will have to find throughout the world (quests won't directly send you to them). These are private for you and your party until they are cleansed. Once cleansed, you will receive loot and they turn into friendly outposts with quests, vendors, a waypoint location, and will sometimes unlock dungeon entrances at these locations. When joining a group the party leader's state of the Strongholds will be used.

Although Strongholds' positions are fixed on the map, they'll be harder to find because quests won't lead you to them (i.e., think off the beaten path locations). Blizzard created the feature to encourage players to explore more of the map, and it's apparently been one of the most popular features in Alpha testing so far. Clearing a Stronghold is permanent (i.e., after leaving the Stronghold for a while, it'll remain cleared of monsters).

Public or Private?

Much like dungeons, once you go through the portal, it's you and your party. We felt that cleansing a Camp and having a moment when you see the NPCs show up -- like, this church is back to a place that's sanctified or this lighthouse now has fires burning in it -- we wanted that to feel personal. We don't turn those public until you've completed them.

Discovering and unlocking Strongholds should feel personal to you and your party, so Blizzard decided to keep them private -- that is, until you clear them, when they flip to public and other players can run through them. This is similar to how dungeons work.

Strongholds D4

Strongholds are an enemy territory that you need to reclaim. You might have a space that begins as a hostile area, but after you’ve cleared it out… it now becomes a friendly town.

As you navigate around, taking notice of the wounds Lilith’s return has inflicted upon the land, you’ll encounter a new type of evil: Strongholds. These are locations the Burning Hell’s minions have claimed for themselves, casting a shadow of darkness upon them for you to lift. Clearing out Strongholds will bring about permanent change to these locations, repopulating them with non-demonic life and rewarding you with loot. Clearing a Stronghold may also reveal new dungeons to delve into and other hidden experiences. Speaking of dungeons, Diablo IV contains almost 150 detailed dungeons—close-quarters experiences for you to root out evil throughout the main questline and beyond. Each time you step foot into a dungeon, its layout and distribution of adversaries will vary, keeping the challenge alive while still allowing you to strategize a way to overcome the dangers within.

Diablo 4 Strongholds

Heroic adventurers can clear out Strongholds such as this one, claiming them once again for the citizens of Sanctuary. The town will never be the same, but victory here can leave a lasting mark and transform this hostile region into a safe haven.
