Diablo 4 Nightmare Dungeons & Nightmare Sigils

Nightmare Dungeons are a gameplay feature in Diablo IV. Nightmare Dungeons operate on Nightmare difficulty, and are unlocked upon locating a Nightmare Sigil. Each sigil corresponds to a specific dungeon somewhere within Sanctuary. These sigils will add special modifiers to their dungeon, increasing the ferocity of the monsters waiting for you inside and providing higher-rarity loot. Through completing Nightmare Ddungeons, players will recover even more powerful sigils, introducing increasingly death-defying modifications and challenges to overcome. As players progress into higher and more challenging World Tiers, new Nightmare Dungeons will become available for them to explore.

D4 Nightmare Dungeons

Nightmare Dungeons are one of the many endgame systems in Diablo 4. You can craft Nightmare Sigils at the Occultist, which create an empowered version of certain Dungeons when activated with much harder enemies. The higher Tier you go, the harder they get. A sneak peek into the Achievement System tells us that only a small percentage are in the Nightmare Dungeon pool. Each Sigil tier has its own list of possible ones:

Nightmare Dungeons D4

We’ve crafted a difficulty of Diablo dungeons straight out of your nightmares. No, really! Nightmare-difficulty dungeons in Diablo IV unlock upon locating your first Nightmare Sigil. Each sigil corresponds to a specific dungeon somewhere within Sanctuary. These sigils will add special modifiers to their dungeon, increasing the ferocity of the hell-servants waiting for you inside and providing higher-rarity loot. Through completing Nightmare dungeons, you will recover even more powerful sigils, introducing increasingly death-defying modifications and challenges for you to overcome. As you progress into higher and more challenging World Tiers, new Nightmare Dungeons will become available for you to explore.

Guides

Inspired by Greater Rifts from Diablo III, Diablo IV's Nightmare Dungeons are like regular dungeons but with added challenge when it comes to difficulty and properties of the dungeon. Each Nightmare Sigil corresponds to a specific dungeon. The difficulty levels are tied to the Nightmare Sigils and will go up infinitely, which also determines the rarity of item drops. Dungeon affixes, also found on the Nightmare Sigils, will customize the dungeons by affecting the player, enemies and/or the environment. Here are a few examples of dungeon affixes:

  • Key replayable system for endgame
  • Sigils will be earned primarily through Whispers of the Dead in World Tiers 3 and 4, but can also be crafted at the Occultist
  • Sigils have set levels, and have affixes which alter how enemies work
  • All dungeons can be Nightmare dungeons, but they will be available on rotation
  • These will be excellent for farming Sacred and Ancestral items, as well as upgrading Glyphs
  • You will eventually be able to fight monsters up to level 150 for the challenge
  • All enemies are invisible unless they are in combat
  • Double Bosses
These Nightmare Sigils can be obtained by completing missions at the Tree of Whispers. More on the Tree of Whispers can be found in the next section. When you complete a Nightmare Dungeon you will be rewarded with a more powerful Nightmare Sigil.
Preplanning and strategizing will play a big role since you will be able to know the dungeon you are heading into, which monsters you will encounter, the difficulty level, and which affixes you are faced with.

Once you unlock higher World Tiers, new Nightmare Dungeons will be available to explore.
