When removed, a short-duration debuff dealing the same damage over time and chill is applied to each nearby enemy. The brand keeps its charges while detached.You are Branded.

Wintertide Brand Build Showcase

As time goes by, the Wintertide Brand Wintertide Brand inflicts Cold Damage on the branded enemy and chills them. Every time it is activated, the damage effect of the brand on the enemy will be stronger.

When the Brand is removed (for example, when it expires, is recalled, the target dies, or the Brand is replaced), the damage over time is released in the area. This affects both brand enemies (if they are alive) and all the others around them. This means that if the damage effect is enhanced by multiple activations, a very powerful damage effect may be applied to an area over time.

Unlike other Brands, the basic limit of the Wintertide Brand Wintertide Brand is two brands per target. With the Runebinder keystone, you can apply three Wintertide Brands to a single target, causing huge cold damage over time. This means that over time, the character’s body will be completely different from other cold damage, but the duration based nature of Brands means that you can easily cast cold skills such as Vortex Vortex, Cold Snap Cold Snap or Arctic Breath Arctic Breath between refreshing your Brand effect.

Skill functions and interactions

  • Debuffs: This skill has two debuffs: "Wintertide" and "Wintertide's End".
    • Wintertide: While a Wintertide Brand is attached to an enemy, it has the "Wintertide" debuff, which deals Cold Damage over Time, and causes the enemy to be chilled. If any enemy has more than one Wintertide Brand attached to it, each brand applies a separate stack of the "Wintertide" debuff. This debuff does not have any duration as it only exists while the Brand is attached.
    • Wintertide's End: When a Wintertide Brand is removed (either by attachment duration or Brand duration expiring, the Brand being recalled or overwritten, the enemy dying, or attaching to a new target e.g. via Brand Mastery), the enemy is no longer affected by that Brand's "Wintertide" debuff, and instead applies the "Wintertide's End" debuff to all enemies in an AOE (including the previously branded enemy, if it is still alive). "Wintertide's End" deals Cold Damage over Time equivalent to the "Wintertide" debuff at time of removal including the "More Damage per Stage", as well as causing the enemy to be chilled. It lasts for a base duration of 1 second, modified by Skill Duration, and multiple instances of the debuff cannot stack; only the strongest instance of "Wintertide's End" will apply.
  • Cold DOT: The skill has two debuffs.
    • While a Wintertide Brand is attached to an enemy, it has the "Wintertide" debuff, which deals cold damage over time and chills. Multiple instances of this debuff stack when there are multiple brands attached to the enemy. This debuff has no duration.
    • When a Wintertide Brand is removed, it removes its "Wintertide" debuff from the enemy it detached from, and applies "Wintertide's End" debuff to each enemy in range (may include the previously-branded enemy if that's still alive). It also deals cold damage over time (value copied from the removed "Wintertide" debuff) and chills. It lasts for a a base duration of 1 second. This debuff cannot stack, and only the strongest instance will apply at a time.
    • An enemy can be affected by both "Wintertide" and "Wintertide's End" debuffs at the same time and will take damage from both (e.g. if an enemy is having a brand attached while receiving "Wintertide's End" from a removed brand).
  • Area: Neither "Wintertide" nor "Wintertide's End" are considered area damage, due to being debuffs applied by the skill. Unlike other Cold Damage over Time skills, Wintertide Brand does not create a chilling area. However, modifiers to Area of Effect will affect the area the brand can apply the "Wintertide's End" debuff on.
  • Activation: While attached, the Brand gains stages every time it activates, which increases its damage. The activation rate (and hence the stage-gaining rate) can be modified by modifiers to Brand activation frequency such as cast speed, or Swiftbrand Support or Brandsurge.
    • By default, with a 0.25s activation frequency, a brand needs to be attached for 5s minimum to reach the final stage of 20, and will only be able to reach 8 stages without investment into duration or activation frequency.
  • Stages: Stages are a property of the brand which increases with each activation. Stages are stored separately per Brand and are not shared between Brands. Stages gained while attached are maintained until the brand expires, regardless if the brand is detached during its lifespan.
  • Hit: Wintertide Brand does not have any components which hit. This prevents it from being supported by Hextouch Support, triggering Elemental Equilibrium, or being reflected back to the player.
  • Chill: Both "Wintertide" and "Wintertide's End" cause the enemy to be chilled while affected by the debuff. By default, it has a base chill of 10% reduced action speed. It is not a chilling area. After an undocumented change in Version 3.15.0, when supported by Elemental Focus Support, the debuffs no longer chill enemies.
  • Duration: Modifiers to skill effect duration and brand's duration will affect the following properties of the skill: total attached duration, total detached duration, and "Wintertide's End" debuff duration.
