Path of Exile features a vendor recipe for acquiring Jeweller's Orbs, used to modify the number of sockets on equipment. Item Needed: Sell a single item to a vendor that has Six Sockets. The item can be armor or a weapon, and the sockets don't need to be linked. Any Quality or Rarity: White, magic, rare, or unique items all work for this recipe. Reward: The vendor rewards you with seven Jeweller's Orbs. This recipe offers a way to convert unwanted 6-socket items into useful currency. This recipe is a simple and reliable method to acquire Jeweller's Orbs throughout the game.
Jeweller’s Orb reforges the number of sockets on an item.
Tainted Jeweller’s Orb reforges the number of sockets on a corrupted item.

Here's the fast recipe:
This is a handy way to convert unwanted six-socket items (especially white items) into useful Jeweller's Orbs, which can then be used to re-roll the number of sockets on other equipment.
Here are some additional points to remember:
If you're looking to trade a six-linked item (all sockets connected), that requires a different vendor recipe involving a Divine Orb.
There is a 6 sockets vendor recipe for getting seven Jeweller's Orbs. If the item's link is less than 5, you can sell it to any vendor for a profit. If it is a six linked item, it will become a Divine Orb vendor recipe.
As the following example shown, sell a Crypt Armour with six sockets to any vendor in exchange for seven Jeweller's Orbs.
Vendor list: 1x Orb of Fusing + 1x Chromatic Orb.
This is actually a downgrade vendor recipe for getting Jeweller's Orb. However, you can still do it for completing the related Jeweller's Orb vendor recipe challenge.

The item sockets are a mechanism by which other items can be placed on the equipment. There are three types of sockets: colored sockets, in which active and support skill gems with matching colors can be placed (can be linked to each other, which is necessary to support skill gems, so as to provide benefits for any linked active skill gems), abyss sockets in which the abyss jewels can be placed, and a delve socketable currency item in which the fossils can be placed.
The number of possible sockets on equipment is based on the item level as well as the type of the equipment being used.
The number of sockets can be changed by Jeweller’s Orb reforging, using the Crafting Bench in your hideout, an
Orb of Binding or a
Encrusted Fossil. Corrupted items can only be changed through the Crafting Bench and need an equivalent amount of
Vaal Orb as the usual cost of
Jeweller’s Orb,
Chromatic Orb and
Orb of Fusing to change sockets on any corrupted item.
Some items have exceptions to these rules.
Number of sockets | Minimum item level | Weight (6S & 3S) | Weight (4S) | First vendor |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 1 | 50 | 100 | Act 1 |
2 | 1 | 120 | 90 | Act 1 |
3 | 2 | 100 | 80 | Act 1 |
4 | 25 | 30 | 30 | Act 3 |
5 | 35 | 5 | N/A | Act 4 |
6 | 50 | 1 | N/A | Act 6 |
Weight (6S & 3S): Applies to items that can have a maximum of 6 sockets such as two hand weapons and body armours or a maximum of 3 sockets such as one hand weapons and shields. Weight (4S): Applies to items that can have a maximum of 4 sockets such as gloves, helmets and boots.
The item level item is generally applicable, but note that there are a few cases where the restriction does not apply:

Jeweller’s Orb is a currency item that can be used to re-roll the number of sockets on a weapon or piece of armour. When you use a Jeweller's Orb on an item, the item's quality is no longer consumed. Each 1% quality improves the result by 1%. This makes the process of crafting sockets is 20% easier on 20% quality items.
The sockets of an item reforged by a Jeweller's Orb also come with random links and colors. Generally, a Jeweller's orb will always roll a different number of sockets. However, if the item has the maximum sockets, such as 6 sockets, it will not change it.
Normally, if the item has a 20% quality, you can get 3 sockets easily. In fact, the chance is random. According to a test made by chris_wilson, the chance of getting 6 sockets is around 0.33%. In other words, using approximately 400 Jeweller's Orb may get 6 sockets.
Number of Sockets | Minimum Level | Chance |
---|---|---|
1 | 1 | 32.68% |
2 | 1 | 29.41% |
3 | 2 | 26.14% |
4 | 25 | 9.80% |
5 | 35 | 1.63% |
6 | 50 | 0.33% |
If one is risk-averse and wants to avoid randomness, one can instead use the Crafting Bench recipe found in Delve mine. Using the Bench to craft sockets overrides the item level socket restrictions (i.e. it is possible to craft 6 sockets on an item level 1 body armour).
