1x Gemcutter’s Prism | 1x Skill Gem with 20% quality |
1x Gemcutter’s Prism | Skill Gems with a total of at least 40% quality |
When done for multiple instances of the recipe at once, each individual combination must add up to 40%. For example: 6 items of 19%, 13%, 15%, 9%, 17% and 7% quality would add up to 80%, but would not actually grant 2 Gemcutter's Prism items, only 1. This is because the 2 individual combinations do not add up to 40 each.

The total quality is 40%. Selling these skill gems to any vendor in exchange for a Gemcutter's Prism.
Gemcutter’s Prism (often abbreviated GCP) is a currency item that can be used to improve the quality of a gem. Its quality bonuses depend on the type of skill gem. Each Gemcutter's Prism will always raise the quality by 1%. The maximum quality is 20% by using Gemcutter’s Prism.
Both active and support skill gems may have quality. Every skill is affected by quality differently, but frequently it somehow improves the damage dealt with the skill. Buffs and curses, obviously, do not have their damage improved. Even those that do have their damage improved will see different rates of improvement for a given amount of quality.
The effect of quality scales with the base quality effect, however, only whole numbers will be granted (and thus the effect will always be rounded down); for example 3% quality on a gem with 0.5% effect will only grant 1% effect and not 1.5% effect. Effects that have some degree of fractions naturally are rounded to their natural bases (i.e. seconds will be rounded to milliseconds, etc.).
Beastcrafting is a method of crafting by sacrificing beasts to the blood altar in the Menagerie. Each beastcrafing recipe requires four beasts to be sacrificed, with most of them requiring one specific Red Beast and three Rare Beasts. The four chosen beasts are released into the arena surrounding the blood altar and must be killed to complete the recipe. If the player dies during the attempt, the recipe fails and the beasts are lost.
If an item is created, the resulting item level is equal to the level of the main beast sacrificed. Recipes that create unique items can generate league-specific uniques. The table below displays the resulting crafts when sacrificing to the blood altar.

Like most items, gems can be corrupted using a Vaal Orb. Corruption on gems can potentially lift the level of quality percentage of a gem above the maximum of 20. Corruption can also convert a gem into its Vaal skill equivalent if one exists. Using Vaal Orb corrupts a gem, it may have one of the following effects:

The resulting gem will be of the same skill, and will have its level reset to 1. Does not work with Corrupted gems. |
Because Gemcutter's Prisms are relatively rare, it is not advised to apply them to gems that have little or no quality. However, selling a Gemcutter's Prism along with a level 20 gem to any vendor will give you a 20% quality, level 1 version of that same gem. Because it is possible to level many gems at once, it is generally considered a cost-efficient method of obtaining 20% quality gems if the player does not have the means to obtain a large number of Gemcutter's Prisms.
