Raise Spectre PoE

Raise Spectre is a skill in Path of Exile that allows you to summon a defeated enemy as an allied minion. The specific enemy you raise will depend on the corpse you target, and each type of spectre has its own unique abilities and strengths.

Raise Spectre is a powerful skill that can be used to build a variety of different minion builds. It is a popular choice for both solo and party play, and can be used to clear all of the content in the game.

Here are some things to keep in mind when using Raise Spectre:

  • The level of the spectre will be based on the level of the enemy you kill. So, if you want to raise a high-level spectre, you'll need to kill a high-level enemy.
  • The type of spectre you raise will determine its abilities. For example, some spectres are good at dealing damage, while others are better at tanking hits.
  • You can only have a maximum of two spectres active at a time.
  • Spectres can be equipped with items, which can boost their stats and abilities.

Maximum Number of Spectres

The maximum number of Spectres you can summon in Path of Exile depends on a few factors:

Base Maximum:

  • By default, you can only summon one Spectre at a time.

Increasing the Limit:

There are several ways to increase your maximum number of Spectres:

  • Raise Spectre Gem Level: Upgrading the Raise Spectre gem level increases the maximum number of Spectres you can raise. Each level adds 1 additional Spectre, reaching a maximum of 5 at level 20.
  • Passive Skills: Specific passive skill nodes on the skill tree offer increased maximum Spectre limit. Depending on the path you choose, you can gain up to 3 additional Spectres.
  • Unique Items: Certain unique items, like the Victario's Influence chestplate, grant increased maximum Spectre limit. It can offer an additional 5 Spectres.
  • Ascendancy Classes: Specific Ascendancy classes like the Necromancer or Guardian have passives that increase Spectre limit by up to 2.

Maximum Achievable:

Combining all these methods, the maximum number of Spectres you can summon is 15:

  • Base (1) + Gem Level (5) + Skill Tree (3) + Unique Item (5) + Ascendancy (2) = 16, but the practical limit is 15 due to the "one additional" wording of some modifiers.

Important Notes:

  • Scaling and Investment: Each additional Spectre increases the mana cost of maintaining them. Consider your mana regeneration and skill links to sustain a larger army.
  • Diminishing Returns: The effectiveness of each additional Spectre might diminish as you approach the maximum. Consider other utility options instead of raw numbers.
  • Build Synergy: Ensure your build benefits from a larger number of Spectres. Some builds specialize in summoning and empowering specific Spectres for optimal synergy.

Who might benefit from a high Spectre limit:

  • Necromancer Builds: They naturally prioritize Spectre usage and typically invest heavily in increasing their number.
  • Minion-Focused Builds: If your entire strategy revolves around minions, maximizing the number of Spectres enhances your overall potential.
  • Specific Strategies: Some unique tactics, like using Spectres as kamikaze damage dealers, might benefit from more bodies even if their individual power is lower.

Remember: The optimal number of Spectres depends on your specific build, playstyle, and resource limitations. Experiment and find the balance that works best for your character!

Skill functions and interactions

  • Monster types: Unlike minions created with the skill Raise Zombie, raised Spectres retain the basic abilities they had in life. Although magic and rare enemy corpses can be used to create Spectres, the Spectres will be the normal version of that monster type, lacking any additional modifiers they may have had. However, intrinsic mods for the normal monsters will be maintained except for some minion-raising abilities of their own. For example, Necromancers will curse enemies but not raise minions. Some monsters like Reanimators and Spectral Tacticians can summon their own minions (Zombies and Raging Spirits, respectively), but their minion's stats will only be affected by Minion-specific support gems and stats that affect allies, like Aura. Since they're not directly summoned by the player, stats from player's equipments and skill tree that modify minions will not affect them.
  • Support gems: Raise Spectre can gain the benefits of many different types of support gems, but not all of them may be beneficial depending on the type of Spectres raised. Minion-specific support gems will work on every type of spectre. For example, Greater Multiple Projectiles Support will affect spectres with projectile abilities, while Increased Area of Effect Support will affect spectres with area abilities.
    • Lifetap Support will affect both the cost you pay to use the skill, and the cost the resulting spectre pays to use its own skill. This can help certain spectres such as Carnage Chieftains use their skills more often.
    • Spectres receive the support of linked gems that are currently linked to the Raise Spectre gem, not the ones linked to the Raise Spectre gem at the time the spell was cast. This means that a player using Chaos Inoculation may first raise a spectre without Lifetap Support linked (expending mana to do so), and then link the Lifetap Support gem afterwards to add its properties to the spectres.
  • Corpse targeting: Holding down the corpse targeting toggle (defaults to the "A" key) makes it easier to choose a corpse to raise. Note that you must continue targeting the corpse while raising the spectre. If you let go of your corpse target button you may raise a different spectre.
  • Monster level: Spectres no longer have their level reduced to the level of the area they are in. Instead, the level of a Spectre is now based on the level of the Raise Spectre skill gem.
  • Desecrate can be used to generate corpses to raise as spectres. See Desecrate for more details.
  • Spectres persist after logout or disconnection.

Strategy

As players progress through the game, there are several monsters that present interesting choices to supplement summoner and hybrid-summon builds alike. Even for a non-summoner build, a single curse-casting spectre whose AI helps them stay away can be quite useful. In practice, it's not that easy to keep a sole spectre alive without having other bodies around to shield it - this means parties and hybrid/full-summon builds.

Popular Spectres

These Spectres are used often due to their strong AI, damage, or mechanics:

Spectre Location
Slave Driver The Control Blocks (Act 5)
Solar Guard (Act 8): The Solaris Temple Level 1 or Level 2, The Harbour Bridge, The Solaris Concourse
Risen Vaal Advocate The Temple of Atzoatl
Syndicate Operative Betrayal encounters
Frost Auto-Scout Tunnels Heist contracts

Party-friendly

The following list are a small sample of Spectres that are compatible with parties in general since they are both useful and have a relatively low graphics load for the sake of others:

  • Snow Cloak - They of Tul found in Tul's Domain
  • Increased Damage Taken buffs:
    • All Damage taken - Pale Seraphim (Beyond)
    • Physical Damage taken - Demon Harpy (Beyond)

  • Damage boosting buffs:
    • Enrage (+20% Move speed, attack speed, cast speed) - Arena Master found from Warlord-influenced Maps
    • Rallying Cry (increased damage and reduced damage taken to allies) - Ruins Hellion
    • 20% of Physical Damage gained as Fire - Trial Chieftain (The Tower of Ordeals)
    • 20% of Physical Damage gained as Fire - Xoph's Favoured (Breach)
    • 20% of Physical Damage gained as Lightning - Baranite Cleric from Crusader-influenced Maps
    • Grants Frenzy Charges - Carnage Chieftain, Stygian Silverback (Act 2); Aboriginal Chieftain (Untainted Paradise, larger)
    • Grants Power Charges - Host Chieftain (Act 6)
  • Curse-specialists (see below)
  • Other (see below)

Ranged multi-shot and AoE

These spectres have high damage, and are generally compatible with traditional ranged/spell support gems such as Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support, Chain Support and Faster Projectiles Support.

  • Spark and Lightning Thorns - Blackguard Mage

  • Siren Screech - Merveil's Attendant, Singing Siren
  • Discharge - Undying Grappler
  • Slow moving Fire Orb and Fire Meteor - Solarsworn Archmage

Combat Support and Distraction

These Spectres have defensive buffs or are tanky.

  • Flicker Strike - Cursed Mariner, Leaping Spider, Undying Grappler
  • Leap Slam - Goatman, Bearded Devil, Murk Fiend, Fetid Maw
  • Whirling Blades - Undying Outcast, Undying Impaler
  • Roll-attacks - Rock Golems (doesn’t seem to hit many, use Crematorium versions).
  • Fire Rolls - Cinder Elementals

Curse Specialists

These Spectres come with curses (note: spectres share player's curse limit).

  • Sniper's Mark - Vexing Archer, Necromancer (certain versions @ The Coward's Trial or The Dungeon of Necromancy)
  • Warlord's Mark - Oak's Devoted, Oak's Fist
  • Elemental Weakness - Defiler

  • Temporal Chains - Mortality Experimenter, Necromancer (certain versions @ The Coward's Trial or The Dungeon of Necromancy), Merveil's Chosen (Whakawairua Tuahu), Wailing Widow/Shrieking Witch

These Spectres come with curses and have +1 curse mod

  • Enfeeble - Ancient Wraith
  • Temporal Chains - Ancient Suffering

The +1 curse mod is independent so having both Spectres allows both Enfeeble and Temporal Chains on monsters on top of what the player can apply.

Finding Spectres in Maps

Some guidance on Spectre corpse availability when raising Spectres in maps:

  • Maps have a default sub-set of mob-types that will spawn, usually related to the tileset.
  • Mobs like Stygian Revenants (Undead) and Undying Evangelists (Humanoid) will have better chance to be spawned with a map mod that changes the allowed mob-types.
  • Taking existing Spectres into a map adds them to the list of spawnable corpses via Desecrate if allowed by the map, even if there are no mobs of that type present. This seems to be related to the default sub-set above. E.g. taking Flame Sentinels into a white Temple will allow their corpses to be spawned by Desecrate. Note that mods changing the spawn-type such as Bipedal will prevent Flame Sentinel corpses from spawning. Also note that some instances will be more difficult than others to obtain the matching corpses, probably because the the actual monster variety in the map tileset is higher. Sometimes this takes dozens of casts, in which case using traps and mines to multiply the number of corpses can be useful.
  • Here is a example list of maps that contain mobs of the following type by default (by no means complete):
    • Ancient Construct: Overgrown Shrine Map
    • Flame Sentinel: Pier Map, Temple Map, Terrace Map, Scriptorium Map
    • Various Goatmen: Coves Map
    • Experimentors Mortality Experimenter and Flesh Sculptor: Burial Chambers Map Cursed Crypt Map, Overgrown Shrine Map, Promenade Map, Temple Map
    • Merveil's Chosen: (T13) Sulphur Wastes[confirmation needed because of version 3.1.0 change] (Vulnerability curse)
    • Necromancers: Cells Map (flammability version tested)
    • Oak's Devoted: Burial Chambers Map
    • Stygian Revenant: Phantasmagoria Map
    • Tentacle Miscreation: Overgrown Shrine Map
    • Undying Grappler: Overgrown Shrine Map, Temple Map
    • Undying Incinerator: Bone Crypt Map, Cursed Crypt Map

Spectre Bank

Due to the fact that players may want to swap the monster they spectred from time to time and finding them once again can take some time (for example, requires Conquerors influenced map or league-specific monster that not added to core game), making the spectre bank is highly recommended.

Here is a step by step guide on how to do it:

  • Have an alternative character that ready to use Raise Spectre skill by creating a new character, or convert existing unused one into a Spectre Bank
    • Buy any level Desecrate and Raise Spectre gems (not counting the ones you're already using) and put them into your Stash.
    • Click "Create" and choose the League you are currently playing on.
    • Choose Witch and level up the character to have around 30 passive skill points
    • Go to Death Attunement node for +1 to Maximum number of Spectres
    • It is highly recommended to equip Queen's Decree for +1 to Maximum number of Spectres
    • This way you can save here up to 3 different spectres
    • Take out Desecrate and Raise Spectre gems from your Stash and insert to the gear
    • For clarity, your tree should look something like this
Spectre Bank Tree
  • With the main character, found and raise the desired monster as a spectre
  • With the main character, use Desecrate in a combat area (which that area instance need to be not reset when character swap, as well as level appropriate area for the alt character), so the corpses of spectres you want to save will appear on the ground.
  • Exit to characters selection and select the alt character
  • Raise the corpse as spectre you want to save (no need to raise it multiple times)

  • For retrieving the spectre from the spectre bank, just repeat the process by using the alt character to Desecrate the desired corpse, then character swap to the main character and raise the corpse.

Note that each character has a cap on how many monster type they can store. It is the same as the number of spectre that can have at the same time.
