Cheap Diablo II: Resurrected Items

Rune Word: put certain combinations of Runes in the correct order into an item with exactly number of sockets and of the correct item type. Or else, your Runewords will not be working. The following Runewords list ranks from low level to high level. There are 78 runewords in total. Rune Words only works in Socketed non-magical items.

Item Types for Rune Words

Make sure you read this so you'll use the right items. People especially have problems with Maces.

  • Body Armor = Any armor that is worn on your chest and not any type of other armor such as boots, helms, gloves, etc.
  • Helms = Any armor that is worn on the head, including helms, Barbarian Helms, Druid Pelts, and Circlets.
  • Shield = Any armor that can be used to block, including shields, Necromancer Shrunken Heads, and Paladin Shields.
  • Clubs = Club, Spiked Club, and Exceptional/Elite versions.
  • Hammers = War Hammer, Maul, Great Maul, and Exceptional/Elite versions. These will not work in mace recipes even though they are listed on the mace page.
  • Maces = Mace, Morning Star, Flail, and Exceptional/Elite versions. This does not include any other types of Maces. Make sure you read about Hammers above. They are not "maces" in the case of Runewords.
  • Melee Weapons = Most weapons that aren't ranged such as a Sword or Hammer. A Bow or Crossbow is a ranged weapon and is not in this category. Sorceress Orbs are not considered Melee Weapons. Melee Weapons: Hand-to-Hand, Blunt, Combo Weapon, Polearm, Spear, Knife, Sword, Axe.
  • Missile Weapons = Bows and Crossbows.
  • Weapons = Melee Weapons, Missile Weapons, Orbs.
  • Scepters = Scepter, Grand Scepter, War Scepter, and Exceptional/Elite versions.
  • Staves - Mean Staves and not other items that are Staff class weapons like Wands.

Rune Words must be inserted into the correct item for the formula in the correct order. Rune Word failures are caused by using the wrong items, Runes, or Rune order.

Rune Word Rules

  • When you create a Rune Word you still receive all of the magical bonuses that were already on each Rune you Socketed.
  • Socketed Items must have the exact number of sockets as the Rune Word formula requires. If the Rune Word is a 3 Rune formula then you must use an item with exactly 3 sockets. A 4 socket item will not work with a 3 socket formula.
  • The Socketed Item type must be the correct item type for the formula. If the formula requires a sword, the formula will not work if you use an axe or spear.
  • Rune Words will only work in Socketed non-magical items. This means that Set Items, Unique Items, or Magic Items with enough Sockets and the proper item type will not allow or convert to Rune Words. Again, they will not work on Magic, Set, Unique or Rare items. So if you have a Mechanic's (or Jewelers item) piece of armor with 2 slots, the Stealth will not work on it because it's magical.
  • The correct Runes for a formula must be used. If one of the Runes is wrong you receive the bonuses of the Runes inserted but it does not become a Rune Word.
  • The Rune IO looks a lot like LO. Make sure you use the correct one.
  • Rune Words will not work in Wirt's Leg
  • The Runes must be placed in the correct order. You can have the correct Socketed item, correct runes and still not activate the Rune Word if you do not socket the Runes in the correct order. This is because you're trying to spell the "Rune Word" correctly and you have spelled it incorrectly. Example: "RalOrtTal". You must first place Ral, then Ort, then finally Tal into the Socketed Item.
  • You need the right patch for the formulae to work. Make sure you have the latest patch.
Other Info
  • If you use superior socketed items, the damage and stats might be higher than shown because you will get the bonus from those items too.
  • The Rune Words listed also list the bonuses of the individual Runes with the Rune Word bonuses.
  • Q: Can you add the level limits on the Rune Words?
    A: Actually these would change depending on what item was used so they were not added.

D2R Ladder Rune Words

For the first time, players will have the chance to unlock a host of new Rune Words in the Ladder system! To be clear, these Rune Words have never existed in the game before, and they will not be accessible in non-Ladder play like the previous set of Ladder-only Rune Words in the original Diablo II experience.

At the end of a Ladder season, players who successfully made these Rune Words will have their Ladder characters be moved into a “non-Ladder” version of the game. Then at the beginning of the next Ladder season, players will make a new Ladder character and start all over again to earn new rewards.

Currently, D2R doesn’t have specific new Rune Words to showcase.

Runewords Not Working?

Rune Words must be inserted into the correct item with exact socket number in the correct order. Rune Word failures are caused by using the wrong items, Runes, or Rune order. Most (99%) of reported errors are caused by failure to understand the recipe.

It may happen that you insert the Runes in the piece of equipment that you want, but for some reason the Rune word is not working. Why is that?

  • It is possible that you have slotted the Runes in an incorrect order. Rune order is vital for Runewords.
  • It is possible that you attempted to create a Rune word in the wrong piece of equipment. If you attempt to create a  Weapon-only Rune Word on a socketed armor, you won't create the Rune Word.
  • It is also possible that the piece of socketed equipment you are using doesn't have the EXACT amount of sockets the Rune Word requires.
  • It doesn't work on unique/set/rare/magic items that also have sockets. Rune Words only works in Socketed non-magical items.
  • It is also possible that you use a wrong Rune. If one of the Runes is wrong, the the Rune Word will not working.

Keep in mind when experimenting with unknown Rune Words that you must be prepared to accept the loss of your Runes if the recipe does not work. Blizzard cannot restore lost items for any reason including due to your failure to properly create a Rune Word. 

Runewords Example

For example, the Rune Word Gloom requires a 3 socketed Chest Armor and will not work on any other item even if there are more than 3 sockets. The Runes must be inserted in the proper order:

  • 1: Fal
  • 2: Um
  • 3: Pul

Inserted in the correct order and in the proper item will grant the Chest Armor the following bonuses:

  • 15% Chance To Cast Level 3 Dim Vision When Struck
  • +10% Faster Hit Recovery
  • +200-260% Enhanced Defense
  • +10 To Strength
  • All Resistances +45
  • Half Freeze Duration
  • 5% Damage Taken Goes To Mana
  • -3 To Light Radius

If the runes are inserted incorrectly, only the inherent bonuses of the three runes will be applied:

  • +10 to Strength (Fal)
  • All Resistances +15 (Um)
  • +30% Enhanced Defense (Pul)

Runeword Preparation Recipes

Runewords Recipe & Description
1 Hel Rune + Scroll of Town Portal + Any Socketed Item --> Remove items from sockets
  • Removes the jewels, gems, or runes from the sockets in an item.
  • The items in the sockets are destroyed, and all bonuses granted by those items are removed.
1 Eld Rune + 1 Chipped Gem + Low Quality Weapon --> Normal Quality Weapon of same type
  • This recipe is useful to upgrade a low quality weapon to normal quality. It can then be used in other recipes to add sockets, in preparation for turning it into a runeword. Any sockets and items in those sockets will be lost after using this recipe.
  • ilvl = 1
1 El Rune + 1 Chipped Gem + Low Quality Armor --> Normal Quality Armor of same type
  • This recipe is useful to upgrade a low quality armor to normal quality. It can then be used in other recipes to add sockets, in preparation for turning it into a runeword. Any sockets and items in those sockets will be lost after using this recipe.

  • This recipe adds 1-4 sockets to the armor, making it potentially useful for a Runeword.
  • The game always rolls for up to 6 sockets with this recipe. The amount of sockets is then capped to the maximum amount that particular item can have. Armor that can only have up to 2 sockets would therefore have a 1/6 chance of 1, and a 5/6 chance of 2.
1 Ral Rune + 1 Amn Rune + 1 Perfect Amethyst + Normal Weapon = Socketed Weapon of same type
  • This recipe adds 1-6 sockets to the weapon, making it potentially useful for a runeword.
  • The game rolls for up to 6 sockets with this recipe. If a weapon can not have 6 sockets, then the number is capped to the maximum for that particular item after the roll. A weapon with 3 sockets maximum would have 1/6 chance for 1, 1/6 chance for 2, and 4/6 chance for 3.
1 Ral Rune + 1 Thul Rune + 1 Perfect Sapphire + Normal Helm --> Socketed Helm of same type
  • This recipe adds 1-3 sockets to the helm, making it potentially useful for a Runeword.
  • The game always rolls for up to 6 sockets with this recipe. The amount of sockets is then capped to the maximum amount that particular item can have. A helm type that only allows 2 sockets would have a 1/6 chance of 1, and a 5/6 chance of 2.

Rune Word Guide

If the player puts certain combinations of Runes in the correct order into an item with exactly that number of sockets and of the correct item type, the item's name will change into a "unique" name, displayed in gold, and the item will acquire extra powers, depending on the "rune word" that was used. The benefits of using a Rune Word is that you can make the Rune Word's magical bonuses apply to any type of item allowed with the proper number of sockets. You could, for example, use an Elite Socketed sword or an Exceptional Socketed sword, and you can also pick which type of sword is used. Uniques, in comparison, use the same item type such as short sword, and are always the same quality (Normal/Exceptional/Elite). You can continue to find better Socketed weapons or armor and, with the proper Runes, continue to have this Rune Word bonus applied to better and better Socketed items as you find them.

  1. Put runes in the correct order. Rune order is vital for Runewords.
  2. The socketed item you are using must have the EXACT number of sockets as the Rune Word recipes you are attempting to socket. If the Rune Word is a 3 Rune formula then you must use an item with exactly 3 sockets. A 4 socket item will not work with a 3 socket formula.
  3. The Socketed Item type MUST be the correct item type for the formula. If the formula requires a sword, the formula will not work if you use an axe or spear.
  4. When you create a Rune Word you still receive all of the magical bonuses that were already on each Rune you Socketed.
  5. Rune Words will only work in Socketed non-magical items. This means that Set Items, Unique Items, or Magic Items with enough Sockets and the proper item type will not allow or convert to Rune Words. Again, they will not work on Magic, Set, Unique or Rare items. So if you have a Mechanic's (or Jewelers item) piece of armor with 2 slots, the Stealth will not work on it because it's magical.
  6. The correct Runes for a formula must be used. If one of the Runes is wrong you receive the bonuses of the Runes inserted but it does not become a Rune Word.
  7. The Rune IO looks a lot like LO. Make sure you use the correct one.
  8. Rune Words will not work in Wirt's Leg. Wirt's Leg is classified as a special item, and will gain bonuses from socketed runes, but will not turn into a runeword.
  9. The Runes must be placed in the correct order. You can have the correct Socketed item, correct runes and still not activate the Rune Word if you do not socket the Runes in the correct order. This is because you're trying to spell the "Rune Word" correctly and you have spelled it incorrectly. Example: "RalOrtTal". You must first place Ral, then Ort, then finally Tal into the Socketed Item.
  10. If you use superior socketed items, the damage and stats might be higher than shown because you will get the bonus from those items too.
  11. Once you've put the Runes in, there's no removing them without destroying all your Runes.
  12. Runewords almost always have a Clvl equal to that of the highest level rune in that Runeword.
  13. RuneWords also work on mercenaries.

Rune Words are an advanced feature for experienced users. However, anyone can create a Rune Word if they take the time to read/learn enough about them to assemble the Rune Words properly.
