D2R Charms Guide

  1. Charms provide their abilities simply by being in the "Backpack" section of your character's Inventory.
  2. Charms come in three sizes: Small Charms, Medium Charms (Large Charms), and Large Charms (Grand Charms). Smaller is actually better as far as Charms are concerned, however, some Magic Prefixes and Suffixes are only available on the larger Charms.
  3. Charms can only be Magic or Unique. There are no Rare, Set, or Crafted Charms.
  4. Charm properties stack, so you can carry several Charms with the same abilities.
  5. About 50% of Magic Charms have only a Suffix, 25% only a Prefix, and about 25% both a Prefix and a Suffix.
  6. Store Life or Resistance Charms in your Stash and equip them before facing a tough boss.
  7. Charms in cube do not function, even if that Horadric Cube is located in your hero's Backpack.
  8. Small Charms are a favorite source of extra Magic Find.
  9. Gheed's Charm is a good Unique Grand Charm for farming gold: 80-160% Extra Gold from Monsters.
  10. It's best to pick only the best Charms to keep and throw the rest away.

D2R Charm Recipes

Only magic charm has a Horadric Cube recipe. Vendoring one Magic charm and three any Perfect gems, you will get a new random magic charm of the same type.

This recipe is mainly used to reroll the affixes of a charm. The result is random. About 50% of Magic Charms will have only a Suffix, 25% only a Prefix, and about 25% both a Prefix and a Suffix.

Outcome Horadric Cube Recipe
1x New Random Magic Charm of the Same Type 1x Magic Charm + 3x Perfect Gem (any)

The ilvl = ilvl. This means to use 100% of the ilvl of the input item.

When cubing, the important thing to keep in mind is the item level (abbreviated to ilvl) of the magic item you're cubing - it will determine what prefixes and suffixes the resulting item can have.

Charm Cube Recipe Example

  • Recipe list: 1x Grand Charm of Pestilence + 3x Perfect Gem
  • Outcome: 1x Grand Charm of Frost

You can see from this example, the original charm requires level 10 and has this affix: +25 Poison Damage Over 5 Seconds. By doing this cube recipe, I get a new Grand Charm of Frost. This charm requires level 3 and has this affix: adds 1-2 cold damage.

List of Charms

Charms come in three sizes: Small, Medium, Large. There are several different designs that each size of Charm can spawn with, though a Charm's artwork has no impact on its stats.

Name Size Icon Description
Small Charms 1x1 Diablo 2 Small Charms Icon Small Charms take up only a single space of the player's inventory. For this reason, Small Charms that spawn with certain affixes, such as Life, Resistances, Max Damage/Attack Rating, Poison Damage, and Magic Find, are incredibly popular to stockpile. Like the Hellfire Torch, the unique Small Charm, Annihilus, is highly sought after by all high-end characters. In addition to its other amazing stats, this item is one of only two items in the game that provide an experience boost to their possessor. The Annihilus Charm can only be obtained by defeating Uber Diablo in Hell difficulty.
Medium Charms (Large Charms) 1x2 Diablo 2 Medium Charms Icon Large Charms take up a 1x2 space in the player's inventory. Although they can spawn with most of the same bonuses as the other Charm sizes, Large Charms are generally not heavily sought after due to their inability to fit into an inventory filled with Skillers. The unique Large Charm, Hellfire Torch is a notable exception. This item is an excellent possession for any character, regardless of build. The Hellfire Torch can only be obtained by completing the Pandemonium Event.
Large Charms (Grand Charms) 1x3 Diablo 2 Large Charms Icon Grand Charms take up a 1x3 space in the player's inventory. Charms that add to a player's skill trees (known as "Skillers") are by far the most popular variety of Grand Charm, especially when coupled with a useful suffix, such as those that add Life. The unique Grand Charm, Gheed's Fortune, is popular amongst Magic Finding characters, but has little use for other players.

Smaller is actually better as far as Charms are concerned, however, some Magic Prefixes and Suffixes are only available on the larger Charms.

Charms, like Amulets and Rings, cannot spawn as normal, but always appear as either magic or unique. There are no rare, set, or crafted Charms in regular Diablo II, though they may well appear in Mods.

Charm Inventory

Charms are special magic items that grant magical enhancements without needing to be equipped to do so. As the right example shown, charms provide their abilities simply by being in the "Backpack" section of your character's Inventory.

Note that they do not function if placed inside your character's Stash or inside a Horadric Cube (even if that Horadric Cube is located in your hero's Backpack).

When using Charms you can really dig yourself into a hole where you cannot pick up any more items. It's best to pick only the best Charms to keep and throw the rest away. As you find better Charms, get rid of older ones. Try to keep some space to pick up one or two large items. If you want to totally fill your inventory with Charms you certainly can. It's up to you. Just don't be surprised when other party members pick up good equipment dropped by monsters because you don't have enough room in your Backpack to pick them up!

Diablo 2 Charm Farming

  1. Magic Find improves the chances of finding Magic, Rare, Set, and Unique-quality gear.
  2. Where to farm charms: Travincal and Cow level, especially the Cow level.
  3. Trading for charms.
  4. Using the 3-perfect gem Horadric Cube recipe to "cube" them (when you transmute 3 perfect gems of any type with a magical item - such as a charm - you randomly re-roll the magic item's prefixes and suffixes).
  5. If you want to find +skills Grand Charms, try the Kurast portions of Nightmare Act 3. The relative open space and predictable layout makes it easy to kill all the monsters, plus if you're a high level character you can just breeze through from Lower Kurast all the way to Mephisto quickly and with minimal danger. The chances of finding a skiller from these areas is only marginally better than higher Acts/difficulties, but the relative ease makes the killing go a lot faster

Small Charms Affixes

Its often surprising to new players, but small charms can often be more valuable than any of their larger cousins. Why? Because the benefits they provide from their prefixes and suffixes available are better per inventory space than those provided by the larger charms. You'll get far more life, for instance, from 3 small charms of Vita than from one grand charm of Vita, which occupies the same amount of space. This makes certain mods more valuable to have on a small charm than any other.

Medium(Large) Charms Affixes

Medium Charms are known as Large Charms within the game. Large charms are often the most overlooked of all 3 kinds, since small charms are more often than not worth more per inventory space, and only grand charms can be skillers. There are times when the large charm is worthwhile, though. Not all that often, mind, but there are times. I'll go through all the available prefixes and suffixes available on large charms, with a brief comparison of value between them and the small/grand charm equivalents.

Large(Grand) Charms Affixes

Large Charms are known as "Grand" Charms within the game. The favourite of many, since skillers are almost universally popular. In some instances the benefits on a grand charm can surpass those on 3 small charms, and sometimes the reverse, though in almost all instances a grand will surpass a large. The one major difference between Grand and small charms is that, above ilvl 50, grand charms don't really have any truly excellent prefixes or suffixes to aim for, whereas Small charms are the reverse. I'll list all the prefixes and suffixes available on grand charms and give a brief note about the usefulness of each.
