Mechanics

  • 50% chance to Trigger Socketed Spells:
    • Each time you use a skill with a mana cost of 100 or higher, there is a 50% chance all socketed spells will trigger. Typically only one spell can be triggered at a time, which makes this item more unique.
    • If multiple of the same spell skill gem are socketed, only one will trigger. For example, if two Summon Raging Spirit skill gems are socketed, only one will cast.
  • when you Spend at least 100 Mana:
    • 100 or more mana must be spent in order to trigger socketed spells.
      • 100 mana must be spent all at once, not across multiple uses.
      • Skills cast with life via Blood Magic or energy shield via Eldritch Battery will not trigger socketed spells.
      • Using Soul Taker or other methods that avoid mana costs will not trigger socketed spells.
      • Mana reservation can trigger socketed spells.
      • Spending mana on trigger costs can trigger socketed spells.
  • Use a Skill:
    • Channeled skills with a mana cost of 100 or above can only trigger spells with the initial cast. This is because Kitava's Thirst triggers when spending mana to use a skill, not to maintain an already-used skill.
  • Targeting
    • Triggered spells will target a nearby target. The triggered spells will not necessarily target the same location or enemy targeted by the original skill.
    • If there are no nearby potential targets, the casts will target randomly.

Strategy

There are several methods that can be used to raise the cost of skills to help Kitava's Thirst trigger its socketed spells more regularly and expand the list of usable skills that can trigger this unique. Rapid cast or attacking abilities are preferred when using Kitava's Thirst to increase the likeliness of socketed spells triggering. Because of the high mana cost needed, several spells and most attack skills struggle to reach the 100 mana threshold, however there are a few ways to increase their cost:

  • Pledge of Hands grants an innate level 30 Greater Spell Echo Support which includes a large 150% mana multiplier and also significantly increases the player's mana pool.
  • A copy of the Unique Jewel Fevered Mind can also be socketed into the passive skill tree to boost the cost of all skills.
  • Archmage Support can also be used to increase the mana cost of spells, if the character has enough unreserved mana.

Channeled skills are the fastest skills, but they activate the cast only once per use (if the mana cost is sufficient), so the player has to start channeling and end channeling rapidly, which is tedious but possible.

Fastest non-channeled spells are Unearth and Armageddon Brand. Frenzy is the fastest attack skill. Instant skills can be used, but might be undesirable because of their cooldown.

Mana consumption of a character using Kitava's Thirst offensively is huge. On average, one needs to spend 200 mana for one activation and the cost of the triggered socketed spells also need to be paid. Nexus Gloves can help mitigate the cost.
