Hell’s Forge Walkthrough

When you approach the Hellforge the quest log should appear and you should encounter Hephasto the Armorer, a Unique Overlord boss similar to The Smith. Much like The Smith, Hephasto has a powerful melee attack and moves fast. It’s best to lure him away from the forge and kill him when he’s alone; it might be a tricky fight however. When he dies he will drop the Hellforge Hammer. Clear the area near the Forge and equip the hammer. When you click on the Hellforge, Mephisto’s Soulstone should disappear from your inventory and appear on the forge. Attack the forge; after two swings the Soulstone should shatter into several fragments and a storm of souls is unleashed.

After destroying the Soulstone, several high-quality gems will drop, including at least one Perfect gem, regardless of difficulty. A single rune will drop as well, with the rune quality increasing with difficulty:

  • Normal: El to Amn
  • Nightmare: Sol to Um
  • Hell: Hel to Gul

Hephasto the Armorer

Hephasto the Armorer can be found guarding the Hellforge in the River of Flame. Players are required to kill him for the optional second quest of Act IV called Hell’s Forge.

River of Flame

The River of Flame connects the City of the Damned with the Chaos Sanctuary. The waypoint is always located in front final strait towards the Sanctuary, and right after it stands the angel Hadriel. His purpose there is unknown, but he warns the player of the dangers ahead.

The River of Flame is also the location of the Hellforge, where the soulstones of both Mephisto and Diablo were destroyed at the end of Diablo II.

The double row of statues between Hadriel and the waypoint are a nice Easter Egg; their heads turn to watch as your character runs past on the way to the final battle with Diablo in the Chaos Sanctuary, something which isn’t all that easy to spot.
