An Orb of Scouring is a crafting currency in Path of Exile that removes ordinary explicit modifiers from a magic or rare item. In the simplest case, it turns the item back into a normal (white) base so you can start crafting again. It is also useful for targeted crafting with protected prefixes or suffixes, lowering an uncorrupted gem’s level, and several Crafting Bench operations.

Below are the currently useful recipes, practical acquisition methods, important exceptions, and the differences between scouring an item and removing only a crafted modifier.
Orb of Scouring Quick Facts
| Property | Details |
|---|---|
| Main effect | Removes removable explicit modifiers from a magic or rare item. |
| Typical result | Normal (white) rarity, unless permanent or protected modifiers remain. |
| Drop level | 12 |
| Stack size | 30 |
| Vendor purchase | 4 Orbs of Chance for 1 Orb of Scouring, first available from Yeena in Act 2. |
| Direct vendor recipe | Sell one rare item with exactly two explicit affixes to receive 1 Orb of Scouring. |
| Divination card | 9 No Traces cards yield 30 Orbs of Scouring. |
How to Use an Orb of Scouring
- Put the Orb of Scouring in your inventory and identify the item you want to reset.
- Confirm that it is a magic (blue) or rare (yellow) item and is not corrupted or otherwise unmodifiable.
- Right-click the Orb of Scouring, then left-click the target item.
- Inspect the result before applying additional crafting currency. Most items become normal rarity, but locked affixes and metamods can change the result.
Example: You find a rare ring with an excellent base and undesirable life and resistance rolls. Applying an Orb of Scouring removes those ordinary explicit affixes, while preserving the base item’s implicit property. You can then use an Orb of Alchemy to roll a new rare item or an Orb of Transmutation to begin magic-item crafting.
Warning: Scouring is not an undo button. Removed affixes do not come back, and valuable modifier combinations can be permanently lost. Double-check the item before using an orb.
What Does Scouring Remove or Keep?
| Item property | Effect of a normal Orb of Scouring |
|---|---|
| Ordinary prefixes and suffixes | Removed, unless specifically protected. |
| Implicit modifiers | Kept. |
| Item quality | Kept. |
| Sockets and links | Kept; scouring does not reroll the socket arrangement. |
| Enchantments | Kept by direct use of the orb; a separate bench craft can remove enchantments. |
| Fractured modifiers | Kept because fractured affixes are permanent. |
| Prefixes or suffixes protected by metamods | Kept if the applicable protection is present. |
| Corrupted or unique items | Direct application is not allowed. |
Rarity exception: If exactly one explicit affix survives, the item becomes magic rather than normal. If two explicit affixes survive, it remains rare. For example, scouring an item with one fractured affix leaves a magic item with that affix intact.
Orb of Scouring Vendor Recipes
Do not confuse obtaining an Orb of Scouring with spending one as an ingredient. The following recipes and vendor purchases serve different purposes.
| Result | Ingredients or cost | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Orb of Scouring | 1 rare item with exactly 2 explicit modifiers | Sell the item to a vendor. Implicit modifiers are not included in the two-affix count. |
| 1 Orb of Scouring | 4 Orbs of Chance | Buy from an eligible currency vendor, beginning with Yeena in Act 2. |
| Skill gem minus 1 level | 1 uncorrupted skill gem + 1 Orb of Scouring | Vendor the two items together. Does not work on corrupted or Vaal gems. |
| Remove crafted modifiers | 1 Orb of Scouring | Use the Crafting Bench option; it does not erase all natural affixes. |
| Remove enchantments | 3 Orbs of Scouring | Use the separate Crafting Bench option on eligible items. |
How to Make a Rare Item With Two Affixes
The two-modifier rare-item recipe is real, but usually less economical than finding or trading for Orbs of Scouring. The most straightforward setup is:
- Start with an uncorrupted magic item that has exactly one explicit modifier. If needed, use suitable magic-item currency to obtain that state.

- Apply a Regal Orb. It upgrades the item to rare and adds one modifier, leaving exactly two explicit modifiers in total.
- Sell the resulting two-affix rare item to a vendor to obtain 1 Orb of Scouring.

Another route is to use an Orb of Annulment to remove modifiers from a rare item until exactly two remain. However, both Regal Orbs and Orbs of Annulment often have better uses than creating a single Orb of Scouring, so compare costs before attempting either method.
Orb of Scouring Gem Recipe
Selling one uncorrupted skill gem plus one Orb of Scouring to a vendor returns the same skill gem with its level reduced by one. This is useful when you need to meet a lower attribute or character-level requirement, or when you deliberately want a lower-level skill effect.
For example, a level 18 eligible gem becomes level 17. The recipe cannot be used on a corrupted gem, including a Vaal skill gem. For a different recipe that resets an eligible gem directly to level 1, use an Orb of Regret instead of an Orb of Scouring.
Removed Recipe: Book of Regression
Outdated guides may say: 1 Orb of Scouring + 1 Scroll of Wisdom = 1 Book of Regression. This is no longer valid. Books of Regression and their vendor recipe were removed in Path of Exile 3.21.0. You cannot use this recipe to lower your character level in the current game. Do not follow old challenge or endless-Heist guides that rely on it.
Orb of Scouring and Advanced Crafting
1. Prefixes Cannot Be Changed and Suffixes Cannot Be Changed
These metamods make scouring more selective:
- Prefixes Cannot Be Changed: Scouring removes the suffixes, including the protective crafted suffix itself, while preserving the protected prefixes.
- Suffixes Cannot Be Changed: Scouring removes the prefixes, including the protective crafted prefix itself, while preserving the protected suffixes.
This is a powerful way to repair one half of an otherwise useful rare item, but setting up metamods can be expensive. Review the item’s prefixes, suffixes, fractured affixes and crafting plan before proceeding. The cheaper-looking Cannot Roll Attack Modifiers and Cannot Roll Caster Modifiers metamods do not protect existing affixes from scouring.
2. Remove a Crafted Modifier Without Resetting the Item
If you only want to remove a modifier added at the Crafting Bench, do not right-click an Orb of Scouring onto the item. Open your hideout Crafting Bench and select Remove Crafted Mods for 1 Orb of Scouring. This targeted bench operation preserves the item’s ordinary modifiers. It is distinct from directly scouring the entire item.
3. Remove an Enchantment
Using an Orb of Scouring directly on an item does not remove an enchantment. Instead, use the Crafting Bench’s Remove Enchantments option, which costs 3 Orbs of Scouring on an eligible item. This is more reliable than treating a Vaal Orb as an enchantment-removal tool: corruption is unpredictable and can leave the item permanently unmodifiable by ordinary means.

4. Reset Magic or Rare Maps
An Orb of Scouring can clear the removable modifiers from a magic or rare map, returning an ordinary map to a normal base before it is rolled again. Players commonly use this when a map contains unwanted or dangerous modifiers. Be careful with specialized, corrupted or otherwise restricted maps: not every item can be reset in the ordinary way.
5. Remove Tattoos or Runegrafts
Orbs of Scouring also have passive-tree uses: they can remove an applicable Tattoo or Runegraft from a passive skill. They can also be used for the Atlas’s map un-scrying option. References to removing Crucible passive skills relate to legacy content rather than a general present-day farming strategy.
How to Get and Farm Orbs of Scouring
1. Kill Monsters and Open Loot Containers
Orbs of Scouring are part of the general currency drop pool and have drop level 12. They can come from monster drops and suitable loot containers. For endgame farming, run maps efficiently, defeat large numbers of enemies, and open strongboxes or other currency-rewarding encounters along the way.
There is no reliable fixed drop-rate percentage for every map, monster and league setup. The previously circulated figure of 1.377% is not an appropriate general-purpose drop chance. More monsters, map investment and currency-related rewards can improve overall currency income, but do not guarantee that a particular orb drops.
2. Buy From an NPC Vendor With Orbs of Chance
The deterministic vendor exchange is 4 Orbs of Chance = 1 Orb of Scouring. Yeena offers it in Act 2, and eligible currency vendors in later acts also carry the exchange. This is particularly convenient during the campaign or in Solo Self-Found when you need one orb for an immediate crafting task.
Tip: In a trade league, first compare the value of four Orbs of Chance against the player-to-player rate for one Orb of Scouring. The fixed NPC price is simple, but it is not always the best market value.
3. Farm the No Traces Divination Card
Collecting 9 No Traces divination cards rewards 30 Orbs of Scouring. Documented card locations include the Ossuary and Reliquary areas in the campaign, plus the Mausoleum and Sepulchre map tilesets when available. In particular, check The Ossuary (Act 5 or Act 10) and The Reliquary (Act 5 or Act 10) for campaign farming.
Map availability and Atlas rotations can change. Check the current Atlas and relevant drop restrictions before planning a map-only strategy. If you already own some cards, completing the set by trading may be faster than target-farming every remaining card.
4. Use Currency Rewards and Divination Cards
Strongboxes, currency-reward encounters, and other high-volume endgame activities can produce Orbs of Scouring as part of their broader rewards. Emperor’s Luck also awards five random currency items, so it can yield Scouring Orbs, but it is not a guaranteed Scouring recipe. Treat random reward sources as supplemental, not deterministic farming.
5. Trade Through Faustus or the Official Trade Website
In a trade-enabled league, the most convenient way to acquire many Orbs of Scouring is often the in-game Currency Exchange operated by Faustus. You can access the service from Act 6 onward and, after meeting him, from your hideout. Choose Orb of Scouring as the currency you want, choose the currency you have, review the displayed market ratio and gold fee, and place the order.
You can also look for player listings on the official Path of Exile trade website. Currency Exchange rates vary by league, platform, supply and demand. Solo Self-Found characters cannot use player trading.
6. Third-Party Marketplace Option
Some players also look at third-party sellers. For those comparing outside listings, U4GM lists Orb of Scouring; its advertised promotion is to buy Orb of Scouring from U4GM with a 6% off coupon: Z123. Confirm whether 6% off coupon Z123 is accepted at checkout, as coupon eligibility and stock can change.
Orb of Scouring Price and Exchange Rates
There is no permanent, universal Chaos Orb or Divine Orb price for an Orb of Scouring. Its value changes between challenge leagues and Standard, and can shift during a league as players craft, farm and trade. An old fixed conversion such as “1 Scouring = 1/2 Chaos” or “1/31 Divine” should not be treated as a current quote.
For a useful price check, compare Orbs of Scouring per Chaos Orb or Orbs of Scouring per Divine Orb in Faustus’s live market, then compare against listings on the official trade site. For players buying directly from NPCs, the fixed vendor benchmark is 4 Orbs of Chance for 1 Orb of Scouring, regardless of player-market fluctuations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Orb of Scouring turn a rare item into a normal item?
Yes. If the rare item’s explicit modifiers are all removable, one Orb of Scouring clears them and produces a normal item. If a fractured or metamod-protected affix remains, the item keeps an appropriate magic or rare rarity instead.
Can I use an Orb of Scouring on a unique item?
No. Direct scouring works on eligible magic or rare items, not unique items. An Orb of Scouring is not a way to turn a unique back into its ordinary base item.
Can I scour corrupted items?
No. An Orb of Scouring cannot be applied directly to corrupted equipment, and the gem-level reduction recipe also does not work on corrupted gems.
Does an Orb of Scouring remove fractured modifiers?
No. Fractured modifiers are permanent. Scouring a rare item with one fractured modifier removes the removable affixes but leaves the item magic with its fractured affix intact.
Does an Orb of Scouring remove sockets, links, quality or implicit modifiers?
No. Those properties are preserved when ordinary equipment is scoured. The 3.29 socket-colour changes do not turn Orb of Scouring into a socket-changing currency.
Is Orb of Scouring better than Orb of Annulment?
They serve different purposes. Orb of Scouring removes all removable explicit modifiers at once, whereas Orb of Annulment attempts to remove a single random modifier, subject to crafting restrictions. Use the former to reset an item and the latter when selectively removing one affix is worth the risk.
What is the easiest guaranteed way to get one Orb of Scouring?
Buy one from Yeena or an eligible later-act currency vendor for 4 Orbs of Chance. If you already play in a trade league and need a bulk quantity, Faustus’s Currency Exchange can be more convenient.
Can I still make a Book of Regression with an Orb of Scouring?
No. The Book of Regression and its vendor recipe were removed in patch 3.21.0. Guides presenting it as a working challenge recipe are outdated.
