The socket number is based on item type and item level.

0 Most Belts, amulets, rings and quivers. Exceptions are Unset Ring, Black Maw Talisman, and Stygian Vise.

Some items have exceptions to these rules.

Socket Number by item level

Items with a higher item level can receive more sockets. The minimum item level to obtain each number of sockets is as follows:

1. How to get the max number sockets

The number of sockets can be changed by the following ways:

  • Jeweller’s Orb Jeweller’s Orb reforges the number of sockets on an item randomly.
  • Use Crafting Bench recipes in your hideout to get the max socket numbers.
  • Vivid Leech Seed Vivid Leech Seed: reveals a random Socket number crafting effect when Harvested.

2. Jeweller’s Orb Crafting – get a random result

Jeweller’s Orbs are primarily used to randomly change the number of sockets an item, subject to the limitations enforced by the item’s item level. If an item has some quality, each 1% quality improves the result by 1%. The sockets of an item reforged by a Jeweller’s Orb Jeweller’s Orb also come with random links and colors. A Jeweller’s orb will always roll a different number of sockets then the item had originally, but will not reroll an item with maximum sockets.

In general the exact chances of obtaining a given number of sockets is unknown, but in the case of weapons the following is known:

3. Crafting Bench Recipes – get the max socket numbers

If one is risk-averse and wants to avoid randomness, one can instead use the Crafting Bench recipe found in Delve mine. Using the Bench to craft sockets overrides the item level socket restrictions (i.e. it is possible to craft 6 sockets on an item level 1 body armour).
