PoE Lapidary Lens: double corrupts a skill or a support gem
The Lapidary Lens in Path of Exile (PoE) is a device used to corrupt gems. Unlike a Vaal Orb, which offers various random outcomes, the Lapidary Lens functions differently. Here’s a breakdown of its effects:
Function:
The Lapidary Lens acts like applying two Vaal Orbs simultaneously to a gem.
Effects:
Increased Chance for Level or Quality Increase: Compared to a single Vaal Orb, the Lapidary Lens offers a higher chance of achieving either a level increase (up to level 21) or a quality increase (up to 23%).
Potential for Both: In some cases, the Lapidary Lens can potentially increase both the level and quality of the gem in a single use.
No Transformation or Negative Effects: Unlike Vaal Orbs, the Lapidary Lens doesn’t transform the gem into a Vaal version or add negative modifiers. It focuses solely on potentially increasing level or quality.
Double Corruption: Since it acts like applying two Vaal Orbs, there’s a chance of neither the level nor quality increasing, resulting in the gem remaining unchanged.
Obtaining a Lapidary Lens:
Lapidary Lenses are not dropped by monsters.
The primary way to acquire them is through the Incursion mechanic. Specifically, Doryani’s Institute is the tier 3 incursion room of Zalatl, Architect of Thaumaturgy. The room contains a device called Lapidary Lens.
Benefits of Using Lapidary Lens:
Targeted Corruption: Compared to a Vaal Orb, the Lapidary Lens offers a better chance of achieving a desired outcome (level or quality increase) without the risk of negative effects or transformation.
Increased Level Cap: It allows you to potentially reach level 21 gems, which is one level higher than the standard maximum level.
Higher Quality Potential: It offers a chance to reach 23% quality, further enhancing the gem’s effectiveness.
Things to Consider:
Limited Availability: Lapidary Lenses are not readily farmable and depend on encountering them in Incursions.
Randomness Still Exists: While offering a higher chance for specific outcomes, the Lapidary Lens doesn’t guarantee a level or quality increase.
Cost vs. Benefit: Depending on the gem you’re using it on, the value of a potential level 21 or 23% quality gem might outweigh the cost or rarity of the Lapidary Lens.
Overall:
The Lapidary Lens is a valuable tool for players who want to increase the level or quality of their gems with a higher chance of success compared to a Vaal Orb. However, its limited availability and inherent randomness require careful consideration before using it on valuable gems.
