MW3 Recon By Fire Mission - Modern Warfare 3

Recon by Fire” is the ninth mission in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II single-player campaign. During this mission, you will be on the field with Price and Laswell as they try to find out what operation Hassan has in Spain.

This Recon by Fire walkthrough explains all the tasks you need to complete this mission.

  • Completion Reward: Gaz Calling Card

Recon by Fire Walkthrough

Use the scope to check out the enemies ahead of you. Then keep moving until Price tells you to take out the enemies on the left. You only need to take one as he will take the other.

Keep moving forward following Price’s instructions. When you get to the other side of the sewer tunnel, a couple of enemies will be scanning the area. You will need to lay down next to Price, conceal your weapon, and move as little as possible so they don’t see you.

Once the enemies pass by you, kill one of the two ahead of you and follow Price to the nearby structure.
Open up your inventory and choose the heartbeat scanner, then pull it out and scan the building. There is no one inside, so you can keep moving.

Clearing the Main Building

Follow Price and do as he says until you get to the main building, now lay down and scout the area. It will be full of guards.

You will need to take down the guards without alerting the others. To do so, kill first the ones that are alone, then the ones that are in duos (you will kill one, and Price will kill the other), and finally, the trios. With trios, you want to move around until you are aligned at an angle where you can take down two guards with one shot.

An important thing to consider during this part is your distance. You will be very far away from the main building, so you want to fire two or three notches above a guard’s head to hit them. Price will tell you how many notches you need to adjust.

After clearing the area, a few vehicles will head your way, lay low, find grass to hide in, and wait until the enemies leave. You can engage if you want, but it’ll be best if you don’t.

Investigating the First Warehouse

Now that there are no guards in the area, you need to head inside the supply warehouses and see what you can find. All doors are locked, but you can open them up with the C4 Brachers in your inventory; remember to step back when you detonate them.

You can either wait outside until the enemies come out (you can use Tear Gas to speed up this process) or head inside the building and clear the area.

You can swap your weapon with another one that makes it easier to engage in close-range combat, but the mission forces you to pick it up if you do. If you’re going to swap weapons, don’t leave your rifle too far behind from your position.

Clear the warehouse and investigate the white container on the right side.

Afterward, five armored enemies will come inside the building and deal with them.

Investigating the Second Warehouse

Move to the second warehouse. You can use C4 on the doors just like the last time. Clear all the enemies inside, and then take a look at the papers lying on a table on the right side of the building.

Clearing the Lighthouse

Go outside and regroup with Price. Follow him to the lighthouse and clear the area from guards. The process is the same as the last time, kill first the guards that are alone, then the duos, and then the trios.

Once the area is clear, a couple of armored enemies will head your way, don’t move and let them pass by you. Again, you can engage in combat if you have one, but these guys are hard to take down, so we don’t recommend doing it.

Clearing the Garage

Now it’s time to move to the lighthouse and clear the garage. You can use C4 on the door or go to the left and use the ladder to climb to the roof and then use Tear Gas to draw the enemies out.

Either way, clear the house and search the crates inside.

In case you need it, there’s a bag filled with ammo lying next to some shelves.

Clearing the House

Now head outside and go to the next building, the main house. Use C4 on the doors and clear the place. There will be a couple of armored enemies inside, so aim for the head when you see them.

A good tip is to use the heart rate monitor to see how many enemies are behind walls, where they are, and how close they are to your position. Doing this can avoid ambushes.

Clear the housing quarters and move the washing machine inside the laundry room. You will find the entrance to a tunnel, get inside, and follow Price. Take down any enemy you see.

Defending Laswell

Eventually, you will get to what looks like a harbor. Laswell will radio you guys to tell you she is in trouble. Aim your weapon at the boats surrounding her’s and try to hit any enemies. There are too many of them, and she will be taken hostage. Go back to Price to end the mission.

Trivia

  • The mission’s name is a reference to reconnaissance by fire, a military tactic which seeks to determine enemy positions by using probing attacks against them, trying to draw the enemy into returning fire and exposing their concealed position.
  • During the initial section of the level, the enemy snipers are modeled identically to the All Ghillied Up skin for the operator Grinch, from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
  • Despite using a bolt-action rifle, Price handles his sniper rifle to fire semi-automatically.
  • If the doors are opened while the player uses the snakecam, they will not get out of the snakecam’s feed and the NPC cannot proceed into the building.
  • Several vehicles can be seen with license plates featuring 2003 or 2009, those numbers are references to the release years of Call of Duty and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 respectively.
  • Two different stories are said by Laswell and Price while describing an operation, depending on the dialogue options the player chooses. In one scenario, Price claims that he dressed someone up in a gorilla suit to distract a high-value target before they slipped on ice, forcing Laswell to grab him immediately. In the other story, Laswell claims that Price displayed a cardboard cow in front of the target’s vehicle before detaining him.
    • But before that conversation. Gaz asks how Price and Laswell met. Both answered that they met in a Football/Soccer match then recruited for an operation.
  • Should the player choose to go loud and clear the area at the beginning of the mission, Price will comment on how Gaz has come “a long way from [his] day in the Police force”, referencing the Piccadilly Circus attack in 2019.
  • The “low crawl” sections in the mission are callbacks to the All Ghillied Up mission in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, with Price repeating some quotes from those levels.
