Orb of Binding is a Path of Exile currency item that upgrades a normal (white) item into a rare (yellow) item while creating up to four linked sockets. It is particularly useful during the campaign because it combines two equipment upgrades into one currency application.

In Path of Exile 3.29: Curse of the Allflame, Orbs of Binding generate white sockets. Any skill gem can now fit into any equipment socket regardless of colour, making this currency even more convenient for leveling.
Orb of Binding: Quick Facts
- Effect: Upgrades a normal item to rare and creates up to four linked sockets.
- Drop Level: 25.
- Stack Size: 20.
- Item Rarity: Normal items only.
- Socket Colours: Added sockets are white in PoE 3.29.
- Primary Uses: Leveling equipment, four-link crafting, and upgrading normal items.
- Acquisition: Random currency drops, Bestiary crafting, and player trading.
1. How Does Orb of Binding Work?
An Orb of Binding performs two actions when used on eligible normal equipment:
- Changes the item from normal rarity to rare rarity, generating random explicit modifiers.
- Changes its sockets to a fully linked group of up to four sockets, subject to the equipment’s maximum socket capacity.
For example, applying an Orb of Binding to normal gloves can produce rare gloves with four linked white sockets and randomly generated modifiers.
The new modifiers are not guaranteed to be useful. The resulting item’s power depends on its base type, item level, and randomly generated affixes.
How Many Sockets Does Orb of Binding Create?
- Body Armour: Four linked sockets, even though the equipment can normally support six.
- Two-Handed Weapons: Four linked sockets.
- Helmets, Gloves, and Boots: Four linked sockets.
- Most One-Handed Weapons and Shields: Three linked sockets, their normal maximum.
- Items Without Sockets: The orb can upgrade many eligible normal items to rare without adding sockets.
Important: An Orb of Binding can create four linked sockets even on equipment whose item level would normally prevent rolling four sockets naturally. Its socket-setting effect ignores the usual item-level restriction.
What Happens to Existing Five or Six Links?
Using an Orb of Binding on normal equipment with five or six sockets replaces its existing socket arrangement with a maximum of four linked sockets. Extra sockets and links are lost.
Warning: Never use an Orb of Binding on valuable normal five-linked or six-linked equipment. Use an Orb of Alchemy instead if you want to preserve the existing socket arrangement.
2. How to Use Orb of Binding in PoE
Follow these steps to craft a rare four-link item:
- Find a normal item with a suitable equipment base.
- Make sure it is eligible for an Orb of Binding and does not contain valuable existing links.
- Right-click the Orb of Binding in your inventory.
- Left-click the normal item you want to upgrade.
- Inspect the resulting rare item and its linked sockets.
- Insert your active skill gem and compatible support gems into the linked sockets.
For example, a leveling character can use an Orb of Binding on normal boots to create a rare four-link item. The resulting sockets can hold one active skill gem and up to three compatible support gems, provided the skill supports that setup.
Remember that linked sockets do not automatically make every support gem compatible with every skill. Support effects must still apply to the linked active skill.
Can Orb of Binding Be Used Like Orb of Alchemy?
Yes. On many normal items without sockets, such as ordinary quivers, an Orb of Binding functions similarly to an Orb of Alchemy by upgrading the item to rare rarity.
However, Orb of Binding cannot be used on strongboxes, flasks, or tinctures. It also cannot upgrade equipment that is already magic, rare, or unique.
3. Orb of Binding Changes in PoE 3.29
Path of Exile 3.29 introduced major changes to equipment socket colours.
- Orbs of Binding now generate white sockets.
- Any skill gem can be placed into an equipment socket regardless of its colour.
- Matching a gem with a red, green, or blue socket grants that gem +10% Quality.
- White sockets accept gems of any colour but do not provide this matching-colour Quality bonus.
- Orb of Binding still creates linked sockets and upgrades normal equipment to rare rarity.
This makes Orbs of Binding especially effective for leveling. Players can create a functional four-link setup without needing to spend additional currency to match the colours of their skill gems.
For more information, see the PoE 3.29 patch notes.
4. How to Get and Farm Orb of Binding
Method 1: Farm Orb of Binding From Monster Drops
Orb of Binding has been part of the core currency drop pool since Path of Exile 3.14. It can drop from monsters and other eligible currency reward sources throughout the game once the relevant drop requirements are met.
Practical farming strategies include:
- Clear monster-dense campaign areas while progressing through the story.
- Run maps that your build can complete quickly and consistently.
- Collect currency rewards from monsters and reward chests.
- Choose content that provides additional generic currency rewards.
- Use a loot filter that displays Orbs of Binding if you want to collect them.
There is no need to target a specific monster to obtain this currency. General currency farming is usually more practical than attempting to farm Orbs of Binding alone.
Method 2: Farm Currency in the Temple of Atzoatl
The Temple of Atzoatl provides currency reward rooms that can contain Orbs of Binding among other currency items.
The relevant rooms are:
- Vault: Tier 1 currency room.
- Treasury: Tier 2 currency room.
- Wealth of the Vaal: Tier 3 currency room.
These rooms contain chests with currency rewards. Upgrading the room improves its rewards, but Orb of Binding is not a guaranteed drop.
Temple farming is most useful when you also value the other currency and Incursion rewards available.
Method 3: Create Orbs of Binding Through Beastcrafting
Bestiary provides a specific crafting recipe that creates two Orbs of Binding.
Recipe: Create a Stack of 2 Orbs of Binding
- 1x Craicic Shield Crab
- 1x Craicic Sand Spitter
- 2x additional yellow beasts
Capture the required beasts during Einhar encounters, then use the corresponding recipe at the Blood Altar in the Menagerie.
Once you complete the encounter successfully, the recipe produces two Orbs of Binding.
This is a predictable acquisition method if you already have the required beasts. However, specifically farming both red beasts may take longer than obtaining the currency through ordinary drops or trading.
Method 4: Trade for Orb of Binding
In trade-enabled leagues, acquiring Orbs of Binding from other players is often the fastest option when you need several for leveling or crafting.
You can use the in-game Currency Exchange or the official Path of Exile Trade website.
- Select the correct league and platform.
- Look for Orb of Binding listings or exchange offers.
- Compare the exchange rate against Chaos Orbs or other accepted currencies.
- Trade the required currency for the desired quantity.
For players considering third-party marketplaces, you can also check whether U4GM offers Orb of Binding for your league and platform. When eligible, use the 6% off coupon: Z123 at checkout. Confirm availability, pricing, and coupon eligibility before purchasing.
5. Orb of Binding Vendor Recipes
Is there an Orb of Binding vendor recipe in PoE 3.29?
There is no standard NPC vendor recipe that reliably exchanges ordinary equipment or other currency items for an Orb of Binding.
Older guides frequently describe the following conversion:
- 20x Binding Shard = 1x Orb of Binding
This recipe is obsolete in current PoE. Binding Shards were removed from obtainable content in version 3.28.0. Existing Binding Shards were deleted when the update took effect.
Harbingers, which previously supplied Binding Shards, were also removed as a core mechanic in version 3.28.0. Therefore, farming Harbingers or collecting Binding Shards is no longer a valid current farming strategy.
Other Recipes and Reward Sources
- Bestiary: Create two Orbs of Binding using Craicic Shield Crab, Craicic Sand Spitter, and two yellow beasts.
- Emperor’s Luck: Turning in a complete set of five cards grants five random currency items. Orb of Binding is a possible result, not a guaranteed reward.
- The Void: A random divination card set reward can indirectly provide different currency rewards, but this is not a reliable way to target Orb of Binding.
For consistent acquisition, ordinary currency drops, Bestiary crafting, or player trading are better choices.
6. Orb of Binding Price in PoE 3.29
Orb of Binding is usually an inexpensive currency because it drops from the core currency pool and is primarily useful for early equipment progression.
As a market reference for October 25, 2026, the Allflame league economy shows approximately:
- 1 Orb of Binding: Around 0.012 Chaos Orb.
- 1 Chaos Orb: Approximately 80 Orbs of Binding.
These figures are approximate market estimates, not guaranteed trading prices. Actual rates vary by league, platform, trade volume, and market conditions.
Because an Orb of Binding is worth much less than one Chaos Orb in this market, buying or selling it in bulk is generally more convenient than arranging individual trades.
Check current exchange values on poe.ninja or the in-game Currency Exchange before making large trades.
7. Orb of Binding vs. Orb of Alchemy
Both currencies upgrade normal items into rare items, but their effects on sockets differ.
| Feature | Orb of Binding | Orb of Alchemy |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrades normal item to rare | Yes | Yes |
| Generates random rare modifiers | Yes | Yes |
| Creates linked sockets | Up to 4 linked | No |
| Preserves existing 5-link or 6-link | No | Yes |
| Can upgrade eligible socketless items | Yes | Yes |
| Can upgrade normal strongboxes | No | Yes |
| Best suited for | Leveling and four-link crafting | General rare-item crafting and maps |
Which should you use? Choose Orb of Binding when you need both rare modifiers and linked sockets on an ordinary leveling item. Choose Orb of Alchemy when the item already has valuable sockets or links you want to preserve.
8. Best Uses for Orb of Binding
Early Campaign Equipment Upgrades
One of the best uses for Orb of Binding is turning a useful normal helmet, glove, boot, or body armour base into a rare item with four linked sockets.
Having four linked sockets allows you to combine an active skill with several compatible support gems, improving your build’s effectiveness while progressing through the campaign.
Quick Four-Link Crafting
Orb of Binding provides a convenient alternative to separately using an Orb of Alchemy, Jeweller’s Orbs, and Orbs of Fusing when starting with a normal item.
The resulting modifiers remain random, so the orb is best used on bases where four guaranteed links are more important than obtaining specific high-value affixes.
Upgrading Normal Socketless Items
Orb of Binding can also act as an alternative to Orb of Alchemy on eligible socketless equipment.
For example, upgrading an ordinary normal quiver generates a rare quiver with random modifiers without adding sockets to a base that does not support them.
Preparing Temporary Gear Before Endgame
For league-start characters, a four-link rare item is frequently sufficient for campaign progression and early mapping.
Once you begin upgrading to five-linked or six-linked equipment, Orbs of Binding become less useful for socket crafting because they cannot create more than four links.
9. Orb of Binding FAQ
Can Orb of Binding Make a 6-Link?
No. Orb of Binding creates a maximum of four linked sockets. For five-link or six-link crafting, use other socket-linking methods, such as Orbs of Fusing or applicable Crafting Bench recipes.
Does Orb of Binding Always Create Four Links?
It creates four linked sockets on eligible equipment that can hold at least four sockets. Items with a lower maximum socket capacity receive fewer linked sockets.
Does Item Level Matter for Orb of Binding?
The Orb of Binding itself has a drop level of 25, but its four-link socket-setting effect ignores the usual item-level limitations. It can create four linked sockets on eligible equipment below item level 25.
Can You Use Orb of Binding on a Rare Item?
No. Orb of Binding only upgrades normal items. It cannot be used on items that are already magic, rare, or unique.
Can You Use Orb of Binding on Maps?
Orb of Binding can function as a rare-item upgrade on eligible normal socketless items, including normal maps where applicable. However, Orb of Alchemy is generally the more familiar choice for routine map crafting.
Can You Farm Binding Shards in PoE 3.29?
No. Binding Shards stopped being obtainable in PoE 3.28. The old method of combining 20 Binding Shards into an Orb of Binding is no longer available.
Do Orbs of Binding Still Drop in PoE 3.29?
Yes. Orb of Binding remains in the core currency drop pool. The removal of Harbingers and Binding Shards did not remove Orb of Binding itself.
Can You Use Orb of Binding in Ruthless?
No. Orb of Binding is not obtainable through normal gameplay in Ruthless mode.
Is Orb of Binding Worth Picking Up?
During the campaign, yes. It is a convenient currency for upgrading normal items and obtaining four linked sockets.
In late endgame, its relatively low trading value and four-link limit make it less important. Whether to collect every Orb of Binding depends on your loot filter, inventory space, and farming strategy.
