Lesser Massive Shrine is a special shrine effect in Path of Exile that increases your maximum Life, Area of Effect, and character size. Its base bonuses are 20% increased maximum Life, 20% increased Area of Effect, and 10% increased Character Size.
Unlike regular shrines found throughout Wraeclast, Lesser Massive Shrines do not spawn naturally. Players can obtain the temporary buff through the Create Lesser Shrine skill granted by the unique helmet The Gull. Alternatively, the unique body armour Blunderbore grants the Lesser Massive Shrine buff directly while equipped.
This guide explains the exact modifiers, how the shrine works, how to increase its effectiveness, and how it compares with regular Massive Shrines. It also includes updated shrine information for Path of Exile 3.29.
1. Lesser Massive Shrine Effects and Stats
The Lesser Massive Shrine provides three simultaneous bonuses:
| Modifier | Base Value | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Increased Character Size | 10% | Makes your character visually larger. |
| Increased Area of Effect | 20% | Increases the affected area of skills with an Area of Effect. |
| Increased Maximum Life | 20% | Increases your maximum Life, improving survivability. |
| Base Buff Duration | 20 seconds | Duration when the Lesser Shrine is collected, before applicable duration modifiers. |
| Uncollected Shrine Lifetime | 10 seconds | The Lesser Shrine disappears if it is not collected within this period, unless modified. |
Buff description: You have increased Life, Area of Effect, and Size.
Flavour text: Courage stands tall.
What Does Each Modifier Actually Do?
20% Increased Maximum Life
This modifier provides additional maximum Life, making it useful for survivability-focused builds.
However, 20% increased maximum Life is not the same as 20% more maximum Life. In Path of Exile, increased Life modifiers generally stack additively with other applicable increases.
For example, consider a character with 1,500 Life before percentage-based increases:
- Existing increased maximum Life: 100%
- Maximum Life without the shrine: 1,500 × 2.00 = 3,000
- Maximum Life with Lesser Massive Shrine: 1,500 × 2.20 = 3,300
- Actual improvement in this example: 300 maximum Life, or 10% of the previous total
This simplified example assumes no other relevant modifiers. The actual increase depends on your character’s Life modifiers.
20% Increased Area of Effect
This modifier increases the area covered by applicable Area of Effect skills. It can benefit skills such as Cyclone, Righteous Fire, and other abilities that affect an area.
Increased Area of Effect changes the size of the affected area; it does not directly provide increased damage. It can nevertheless improve clearing efficiency by allowing attacks or spells to affect more enemies.
10% Increased Character Size
This modifier makes the player character appear larger.
Character size should not be confused with Area of Effect, attack range, or movement speed. The visual size increase is a separate modifier and does not automatically improve those mechanics.
2. How to Get Lesser Massive Shrine in PoE
There are two important equipment-based methods for obtaining the Lesser Massive Shrine buff.
Method 1: Use The Gull Unique Helmet
The Gull is a unique Raven Mask that grants the skill Trigger Level 1 Create Lesser Shrine when you Kill an Enemy.
When this skill triggers, it creates a random Lesser Shrine nearby. One of the possible outcomes is a Lesser Massive Shrine.
The Gull’s Create Lesser Shrine skill has the following mechanics:
- Triggers when you kill an enemy, subject to its cooldown.
- Has a base cooldown of 20 seconds at level 1.
- Starts on cooldown.
- Creates a random Lesser Shrine.
- The created shrine lasts for 10 seconds by default.
- Interacting with the shrine grants its buff for 20 seconds by default.
- Collecting the same Lesser Shrine effect again refreshes its duration.
The Gull can generate six types of Lesser Shrines, so the Lesser Massive Shrine is not guaranteed on every trigger.
The Gull Stats in Path of Exile 3.29
Patch 3.29.0 changed The Gull’s modifiers. The current version has the following stats:
| Modifier | Current Value |
|---|---|
| Required Level | 38 |
| Base Type | Raven Mask |
| Triggered Skill | Level 1 Create Lesser Shrine when you Kill an Enemy |
| Increased Evasion and Energy Shield | 120–150% |
| Additional Maximum Energy Shield | +30–45 |
| Additional Maximum Life | +60–80 |
| Cold Resistance | +30–40% |
| Increased Effect of Shrine Buffs on You | 25–50% |
| Increased Duration of Shrine Effects on You | 25–50% |
Important 3.29 change: The Gull previously provided a fixed 75% increased Effect of Shrine Buffs and 50% increased Duration of Shrine Effects. In version 3.29.0, both modifiers were changed to independently rolled values of 25–50%.
Older copies can retain their previous modifiers unless updated. Players should check the actual modifiers displayed on their helmet rather than assuming every copy has the same values.
How Much Does The Gull Increase Lesser Massive Shrine?
The Gull increases the effect and duration of shrine buffs. Therefore, the actual Lesser Massive Shrine bonuses can be stronger than their base values.
| Stat | Base Lesser Massive Shrine | With 25% Increased Shrine Effect | With 50% Increased Shrine Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character Size | 10% | 12.5% | 15% |
| Area of Effect | 20% | 25% | 30% |
| Maximum Life | 20% | 25% | 30% |
These are calculated modifier magnitudes before game-specific rounding and assume there are no other shrine-effect modifiers.
The duration modifier works independently:
- Base Lesser Shrine buff duration: 20 seconds.
- With 25% increased Shrine Effect Duration: 25 seconds.
- With 50% increased Shrine Effect Duration: 30 seconds.
Because the two modifiers roll separately on The Gull, a helmet with 50% increased shrine effect does not necessarily have 50% increased shrine duration.
Method 2: Use Blunderbore Unique Body Armour
Blunderbore is a unique Astral Plate that grants the following modifiers:
- You have Lesser Brutal Shrine Buff.
- You have Lesser Massive Shrine Buff.
- 50–75% increased Effect of Shrine Buffs on you.
- 80–120% increased Armour.
- +500–700 Strength Requirement.
Unlike The Gull, Blunderbore does not require you to kill enemies and collect a randomly generated Lesser Massive Shrine. Its Lesser Massive Shrine buff is active while the item is equipped and its conditions are satisfied.
This makes Blunderbore particularly useful for builds that want consistent access to the Life and Area of Effect bonuses.
However, Blunderbore’s unusually high additional Strength Requirement is an important drawback. Players must ensure they can meet its requirements before equipping it.
Lesser Massive Shrine With Blunderbore
Blunderbore increases shrine buff effectiveness by 50–75%.
Without any other shrine-effect modifiers, the Lesser Massive Shrine bonuses become approximately:
| Stat | Blunderbore With 50% Increased Shrine Effect | Blunderbore With 75% Increased Shrine Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Character Size | 15% | 17.5% |
| Area of Effect | 30% | 35% |
| Maximum Life | 30% | 35% |
These percentages represent the shrine modifiers, not the final percentage increase to the character’s existing total Life.
Can You Use The Gull and Blunderbore Together?
Yes. The Gull and Blunderbore can be equipped together, provided that your character meets their equipment requirements.
The Gull’s increased Shrine Buff Effect also applies to the Lesser Massive Shrine buff granted by Blunderbore.
For example, if Blunderbore provides 75% increased Shrine Buff Effect and The Gull provides another 50%, the combined increase is 125%, assuming no additional modifiers.
The resulting Lesser Massive Shrine modifiers are calculated as follows:
- Maximum Life: 20% × 2.25 = 45% increased maximum Life.
- Area of Effect: 20% × 2.25 = 45% increased Area of Effect.
- Character Size: 10% × 2.25 = 22.5% increased Character Size.
This combination can be attractive for specialised shrine-effect builds, but it requires both the helmet and body armour slots.
3. Lesser Massive Shrine vs. Massive Shrine
The Lesser Massive Shrine and regular Massive Shrine provide similar bonuses, but their values, availability, and base durations differ.
| Feature | Lesser Massive Shrine | Massive Shrine |
|---|---|---|
| Character Size | 10% increased | 30% increased |
| Area of Effect | 20% increased | 40% increased |
| Maximum Life | 20% increased | 40% increased |
| Base Buff Duration | 20 seconds when collected | 45 seconds |
| How to Obtain | The Gull, Blunderbore, or certain special effects | Regular shrine encounters and other sources of shrine buffs |
| Natural World Spawn | No | Yes |
Which is better? The regular Massive Shrine provides stronger base bonuses. However, the Lesser Massive Shrine can be more useful for builds built around specific unique items, particularly Blunderbore, because those builds can maintain access to its effects without finding a regular shrine.
Both effects can benefit from applicable modifiers that increase shrine buff effectiveness.
4. How Long Does Lesser Massive Shrine Last?
The Lesser Massive Shrine has two separate duration mechanics that players should understand.
Duration Before Collection
A Lesser Shrine created by the Create Lesser Shrine skill normally remains available for 10 seconds.
If the player does not interact with it within that time, it disappears.
Modifiers to Skill Effect Duration can affect how long the created shrine remains in the world, but this is separate from the duration of the buff granted after collection.
Duration After Collection
Once collected, the Lesser Massive Shrine grants its buff for 20 seconds by default.
Modifiers that increase the Duration of Shrine Effects on You can extend this buff duration.
For example, The Gull can increase the duration to 25–30 seconds with its current 25–50% duration modifier, before considering other applicable modifiers.
For comparison, regular shrines typically grant effects lasting 45 seconds. Divine Shrines are an exception, with a base duration of 20 seconds.
5. How to Improve Lesser Massive Shrine Effectiveness
Players interested in maximising the Lesser Massive Shrine’s benefits should focus on modifiers that explicitly increase shrine buff effectiveness.
Increase Shrine Buff Effect
The most direct method is to use equipment that grants increased Effect of Shrine Buffs on You.
Examples include:
- The Gull: 25–50% increased Effect of Shrine Buffs on You in version 3.29.
- Blunderbore: 50–75% increased Effect of Shrine Buffs on You.
- Other applicable modifiers that increase the effect of buffs on your character.
These applicable increased-effect modifiers generally combine additively before being applied to the Lesser Massive Shrine’s base modifiers.
Increase Shrine Effect Duration
Increasing shrine duration is especially valuable when using The Gull because its generated shrines provide temporary buffs.
Longer durations make it easier to maintain useful shrine effects across successive monster packs.
Understand Atlas Passive Limitations
Not all Atlas passive modifiers affecting shrines apply to Lesser Shrines.
In particular, bonuses specifically applying to Shrine Buffs granted by Shrines in your Maps generally do not apply to Lesser Shrines generated by The Gull.
Likewise, the Syncretism Atlas passive does not cause The Gull’s created Lesser Shrines to grant an additional random shrine buff.
Always check the exact modifier wording before investing passive points into shrine-related mechanics.
6. Complete List of Lesser Shrines in PoE
Path of Exile includes six Lesser Shrine types associated with the Create Lesser Shrine skill. Each grants a different temporary bonus.
| Lesser Shrine | Effect | Base Modifiers |
|---|---|---|
| Lesser Acceleration Shrine | Increased action speed and projectile speed. |
|
| Lesser Brutal Shrine | Increased damage, knockback, and stun duration. |
|
| Lesser Impenetrable Shrine | Improved defensive statistics. |
|
| Lesser Massive Shrine | Increased Life, Area of Effect, and character size. |
|
| Lesser Replenishing Shrine | Life regeneration and improved Mana Regeneration Rate. |
|
| Lesser Resistance Shrine | Additional elemental resistances and maximum elemental resistances. |
|
Patch 3.28 update: Lesser Replenishing Shrine now provides 100% increased Mana Regeneration Rate instead of regenerating approximately 3.33% of maximum Mana per second. Its Life regeneration effect remains.
7. List of Regular Shrines in Path of Exile

|
Important Updates to the Regular Shrine List
Several shrine mechanics have changed since the earliest versions of Path of Exile.
- Resonating Shrine: Since patch 3.28, the effect grants +1 maximum Power, Frenzy, and Endurance Charge instead of its previous per-charge bonuses. Random charge generation remains.
- Replenishing Shrine: Since patch 3.28, the shrine grants 200% increased Mana Regeneration Rate instead of regenerating 10% of maximum Mana per second.
- Divine Shrine: Its duration was reduced to 20 seconds in patch 3.25.
- Burning, Hexing, and Static Shrines: These old shrine types stopped spawning in version 2.0.0.
- Thorned Shrine: This shrine was removed from natural spawning in version 1.1.0.
These historical shrines should not be presented as standard active shrine encounters in a current Path of Exile guide.
Are There Other Special Shrine Types?
Yes. Beyond the standard and Lesser Shrine types, Path of Exile includes special shrine effects associated with specific mechanics.
Examples include Covetous Shrines, Apparition Shrines, Evolving Shrines, and Greater Shrine buffs granted by particular effects.
These are not part of the six-shrine pool created by The Gull’s Create Lesser Shrine skill.
8. Is Lesser Massive Shrine Good?
The Lesser Massive Shrine is particularly valuable when its buffs complement a character’s existing strengths.
Life-Based Builds
The increased maximum Life modifier benefits Life-focused characters. Builds with a large base Life pool can gain meaningful additional Life, improving their ability to survive incoming damage.
Area of Effect Builds
Skills that rely on Area of Effect can benefit from the additional coverage. A larger affected area can help damage more enemies during mapping.
However, the shrine does not directly increase the damage dealt by a skill.
Shrine-Focused Builds
Characters using Blunderbore, The Gull, or other shrine-effect interactions can benefit from increasing the effectiveness of Lesser Massive Shrine.
Blunderbore is especially interesting because it provides the Lesser Massive Shrine buff directly rather than requiring a random shrine to appear.
When Is It Less Useful?
The shrine may offer less practical value for builds that:
- Primarily depend on Energy Shield rather than maximum Life.
- Use skills that do not meaningfully benefit from increased Area of Effect.
- Cannot afford to dedicate equipment slots to shrine-related unique items.
- Need consistent damage bonuses more than additional Life or area coverage.
The value of the shrine depends on the entire character build rather than the shrine modifiers alone.
9. Frequently Asked Questions
What does Lesser Massive Shrine do in PoE?
It provides 10% increased Character Size, 20% increased Area of Effect, and 20% increased maximum Life before modifiers that increase shrine buff effectiveness.
How do you get Lesser Massive Shrine?
The Gull can create a random Lesser Shrine when you kill an enemy, and Lesser Massive Shrine is one of the possible results. Blunderbore directly grants the Lesser Massive Shrine buff while equipped.
Does Lesser Massive Shrine increase damage?
No. It does not directly grant increased damage. Its Area of Effect bonus can improve enemy coverage, while its Life bonus improves survivability.
How long does Lesser Massive Shrine last?
A collected Lesser Massive Shrine grants a buff lasting 20 seconds by default. The created shrine itself normally disappears after 10 seconds if not collected. Applicable duration modifiers can extend these values.
Does The Gull increase Lesser Massive Shrine’s effect?
Yes. In Path of Exile 3.29, The Gull provides 25–50% increased Effect of Shrine Buffs on You, depending on the item’s roll. This scales the Lesser Massive Shrine’s bonuses.
Does Blunderbore give permanent Lesser Massive Shrine?
Blunderbore grants the Lesser Massive Shrine buff directly while equipped. Unlike a temporary shrine generated by The Gull, it does not require repeated interaction with spawned shrines.
Does Lesser Massive Shrine increase character hitbox size?
The shrine increases Character Size, which changes the character’s visual scale. This should not be treated as a guaranteed increase to combat hitboxes, skill range, or collision size.
Can you get Lesser Massive Shrine naturally in maps?
No. Lesser Shrines do not naturally spawn as regular map shrines. They must be generated or granted through specific skills, equipment, or special mechanics.
What is the difference between Lesser Massive Shrine and Massive Shrine?
Lesser Massive Shrine grants 20% increased maximum Life, 20% increased Area of Effect, and 10% increased Character Size. Regular Massive Shrine grants 40% increased maximum Life, 40% increased Area of Effect, and 30% increased Character Size.
Do multiple Lesser Massive Shrine buffs stack?
Collecting the same Lesser Shrine effect again refreshes its duration rather than independently stacking multiple copies of the same temporary buff.
