Orb of Annulment is a valuable crafting currency in Path of Exile that removes one random modifier from a magic or rare item. It is commonly used to remove unwanted affixes from otherwise valuable equipment, create space for additional crafting, and improve items without completely rerolling them.
However, using an Orb of Annulment is risky. Unless the item has protected modifiers or other special crafting restrictions, you cannot choose which modifier will be removed. A failed annulment can destroy the value of an expensive item.

This guide explains how to use Orbs of Annulment, calculate crafting odds, obtain them through farming and divination cards, understand vendor recipes, and check their current market price in Path of Exile 3.29: Curse of the Allflame.
1. What Is an Orb of Annulment in PoE?
| Property | Details |
|---|---|
| Currency | Orb of Annulment |
| Effect | Removes one random eligible modifier from a magic or rare item |
| Maximum Stack Size | 20 |
| Drop Level | 35 |
| Item Rarity | Magic and Rare |
| Primary Purpose | Removing unwanted explicit modifiers |
| Major Risk | May remove a valuable modifier instead |
| Core Availability | Part of the general currency drop pool |
An Orb of Annulment removes one eligible explicit modifier. It does not reroll the remaining modifiers, change their numerical values, or downgrade the item’s rarity.
For example, using an Orb of Annulment on a rare item with five eligible modifiers removes one of those modifiers while leaving the others unchanged.
2. How to Use an Orb of Annulment
To use an Orb of Annulment:
- Place an Orb of Annulment in your inventory.
- Right-click the Orb of Annulment.
- Left-click the magic or rare item you want to modify.
- One eligible explicit modifier will be removed.
- Inspect the item to determine whether the result improves your crafting options.
Important: An Orb of Annulment does not let you manually select an unwanted modifier. Its outcome is random among eligible modifiers unless another crafting mechanic changes the selection rules.
Example: Removing an Unwanted Modifier
Imagine a rare pair of boots with these five explicit modifiers:
- +90 to Maximum Life
- +40% to Fire Resistance
- +35% to Cold Resistance
- 25% Increased Movement Speed
- +15 to Maximum Mana
The first four modifiers are valuable for your build, but the Mana modifier is undesirable.
If all five modifiers are equally eligible for removal, an Orb of Annulment has a 20% chance of removing the Mana modifier and an 80% chance of removing one of the four desirable modifiers.
If the annulment succeeds, you may gain an open affix slot for another crafting step. If it fails, the boots may lose significant value.
3. Orb of Annulment Crafting Odds
The probability of removing a particular modifier depends on the number of eligible modifiers on the item.
In an ordinary annulment where all eligible modifiers have equal selection probability:
Chance to remove a specific modifier = 1 / Number of eligible modifiers × 100%
| Eligible Modifiers | Chance to Remove One Specific Modifier |
|---|---|
| 2 | 50% |
| 3 | 33.33% |
| 4 | 25% |
| 5 | 20% |
| 6 | 16.67% |
These percentages assume that every listed modifier is eligible. Protected prefixes or suffixes, fractured modifiers, and certain metamods can change the effective selection pool.
Before using an expensive annulment, inspect the item’s full modifiers with advanced item descriptions and determine which affixes can actually be removed.
4. Orb of Annulment and Metamod Crafting
One of the most important advanced uses of an Orb of Annulment involves metamods from the Crafting Bench.
Metamods can protect selected modifiers or restrict which affixes are eligible for removal.
Prefixes Cannot Be Changed
The crafted modifier Prefixes Cannot Be Changed protects existing prefixes from being removed by an Orb of Annulment.
This is useful when an item has excellent prefixes but undesirable suffixes.
For example, suppose an item has three valuable prefixes, one unwanted suffix, and the crafted Prefixes Cannot Be Changed suffix.
The prefixes are protected, but the annulment may remove either the unwanted suffix or the metamod itself.
Therefore, this method protects your existing prefixes but does not guarantee removal of the unwanted suffix.
Suffixes Cannot Be Changed
Suffixes Cannot Be Changed works similarly, protecting existing suffixes while allowing eligible prefixes to be removed.
It is particularly useful when crafting an item with valuable suffixes and undesirable prefixes.
Cannot Roll Attack or Caster Modifiers
Orbs of Annulment also respect the applicable Cannot Roll Attack Modifiers and Cannot Roll Caster Modifiers metamods.
For example, Cannot Roll Caster Modifiers prevents an Orb of Annulment from removing modifiers with the Caster tag while that protection applies.
These interactions can make certain crafting outcomes more predictable.
However, modifier tags must be checked carefully, and other crafting systems may not respect the same restrictions.
5. Can an Orb of Annulment Remove Fractured Modifiers?
No. An Orb of Annulment cannot remove a fractured modifier.
Fractured modifiers are permanently locked to an item and remain unaffected by ordinary modifier-removal currency, including Orbs of Annulment and Orbs of Scouring.
This creates a useful crafting strategy:
- Obtain an item with a valuable fractured modifier.
- Add or reroll other modifiers through an appropriate crafting method.
- Use an Orb of Annulment to remove an unwanted, non-fractured modifier.
- Continue crafting while preserving the fractured modifier.
For example, an item with a fractured resistance modifier and two ordinary modifiers can have one of the ordinary modifiers removed without risking the fractured resistance.
Fractured items are therefore particularly useful for crafting projects that involve repeated annulments.
6. How to Get Orbs of Annulment in PoE 3.29
There are several ways to obtain Orbs of Annulment in Path of Exile. The best method depends on whether you play a trade league or Solo Self-Found (SSF).
| Method | How It Works | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Monster Drops | Obtain Orbs of Annulment from the general currency drop pool. | Useful for SSF and general mapping. |
| 2. Currency Farming | Run profitable maps and currency-focused encounters. | Good for generating currency over time. |
| 3. Divination Cards | Complete The Seeker or Demigod’s Wager sets. | Useful for targeted acquisition. |
| 4. Currency Exchange | Exchange other currencies through Faustus. | Convenient for trade league players. |
| 5. Third-Party Marketplace | Purchase currency from an independent seller. | Subject to seller availability. |
| 6. Annulment Shards | Combine 20 existing Annulment Shards. | Legacy method; shards are now drop-disabled. |
Method 1: Farm Orbs of Annulment from Monsters
Orbs of Annulment can drop naturally from monsters and other eligible sources of currency loot. Their drop level is 35.
Common ways to encounter currency drops include:
- Defeating monsters throughout the campaign and endgame.
- Clearing maps with high monster density.
- Opening currency-related chests and strongboxes.
- Completing encounters that provide general currency rewards.
Because an Orb of Annulment is a relatively uncommon currency item, farming it through random drops alone can be inconsistent.
Players who need multiple annulments may find it more efficient to farm valuable items and currencies, then exchange their profits for Orbs of Annulment.
Method 2: Farm Currency Through Endgame Mapping
Efficient mapping is one of the most practical ways to accumulate wealth that can be converted into Orbs of Annulment.
A basic farming strategy includes:
- Choose maps your build can complete quickly and consistently.
- Use appropriate Atlas passive skills and Scarabs to improve your chosen farming strategy.
- Prioritize profitable encounters, monster density, and currency rewards.
- Sell valuable drops through the game’s trading systems.
- Exchange the resulting currency for Orbs of Annulment.
In PoE 3.29, players can also earn rewards from Curse of the Allflame content, including Charts, Voyages, and related encounters.
These activities can produce valuable loot that helps fund crafting projects. However, they should not be treated as guaranteed sources of Orbs of Annulment.
Farming Tip: Compare your total currency profit per hour rather than focusing exclusively on the number of annulments that drop directly.
Method 3: Get Orbs of Annulment from Divination Cards
Divination cards provide another way to obtain Orbs of Annulment.
Two relevant cards are The Seeker and Demigod’s Wager.
| Divination Card | Cards Required | Reward | Known Drop Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Seeker | 9 | 3x Orb of Annulment | The Temple of Atzoatl |
| Demigod’s Wager | 7 | 1x Orb of Annulment | Historically Crimson Temple Map and Lookout Map, with the Basilica boss associated with the card’s drop restrictions |
The Seeker
Collecting nine copies of The Seeker rewards three Orbs of Annulment.
The card is associated with the Temple of Atzoatl, making Incursion content a potential source.
Players interested in farming The Seeker can run Incursion encounters and complete Temples of Atzoatl. However, card drops are random, and there is no guaranteed number of cards per Temple.
Demigod’s Wager
Collecting seven copies of Demigod’s Wager rewards one Orb of Annulment.
The card has historically been associated with Crimson Temple and Lookout maps, as well as the Basilica boss.
PoE 3.29 Note: Crimson Temple was removed from the current Atlas map pool in version 3.29. Therefore, older farming guides that recommend repeatedly running Crimson Temple should not be followed without checking the current map availability and drop sources.
If you already have these divination cards, you can complete the sets and exchange them for their rewards.
Method 4: Trade for Orbs of Annulment Through Faustus
For players in trade-enabled leagues, exchanging existing currency for Orbs of Annulment is often the simplest acquisition method.
Path of Exile provides an in-game Currency Exchange operated by Faustus, the Financier.
To obtain Orbs of Annulment through the Currency Exchange:
- Unlock access to Faustus and the Currency Exchange.
- Open the Currency Exchange interface.
- Select Orb of Annulment under the currency you want to receive.
- Choose the currency you are willing to exchange, such as Chaos Orbs.
- Review the current market exchange rate and required Gold fee.
- Place an order and collect the currency after the trade is completed.
Faustus becomes available during the campaign, starting in Act 6, and can also be accessed from your hideout once available.
According to the current currency data, the Currency Exchange fee for receiving an Orb of Annulment is 250 Gold per orb.
The Gold fee is separate from the currency being exchanged. It does not mean that an NPC sells Orbs of Annulment for 250 Gold.
You can also use the official Path of Exile Trade website to locate player listings.
Method 5: Buy Orb of Annulment from U4GM — 6% Off Coupon Z123
Players considering third-party marketplaces can also find Orb of Annulment for sale at U4GM.
For the advertised discount, use the 6% off coupon: Z123 at checkout when buying PoE currency from U4GM.
Enter Z123 in the coupon field and confirm that the 6% discount applies before completing an order. Availability, eligibility, and prices may vary.
Method 6: Combine Existing Annulment Shards
The historical Annulment Shard recipe is:
20x Annulment Shard = 1x Orb of Annulment
When a complete stack of 20 Annulment Shards is assembled, it becomes one Orb of Annulment.
However, this method has an important limitation in the current game.
PoE 3.28 and 3.29 Update: Harbingers were removed as a core league mechanic in version 3.28, and Annulment Shards are now drop-disabled.
Existing Annulment Shards can still be relevant in permanent leagues, but farming new shards through old Harbinger encounters is no longer a current strategy.
7. Orb of Annulment Vendor Recipes
Players frequently search for an Orb of Annulment vendor recipe. However, there is no standard equipment-selling recipe that reliably produces a full Orb of Annulment directly.
The important conversion recipes are:
| Required Items | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 20x Annulment Shard | 1x Orb of Annulment | Legacy shard conversion; new shards are drop-disabled. |
| 9x The Seeker | 3x Orb of Annulment | Divination card exchange. |
| 7x Demigod’s Wager | 1x Orb of Annulment | Divination card exchange. |
Divination card sets are exchanged with the appropriate card-exchange NPC, not through the ordinary equipment vendor recipe system.
Cards such as Emperor’s Luck can also produce random currency rewards, but they are not reliable methods of specifically obtaining an Orb of Annulment.
8. Orb of Annulment Price in PoE 3.29
The price of an Orb of Annulment varies depending on the current league, available supply, crafting demand, and the platform or trading market.
As of the October 25, 2026 review, PoEDB’s economy tracker displayed a rate of approximately 12 Chaos Orbs per Orb of Annulment.
This is a market snapshot, not a fixed price or guaranteed executable trade. Rates can change, and the tracker may not match every league or platform.
| Currency | Price Information |
|---|---|
| Orb of Annulment | Approximately 12 Chaos Orbs in the referenced market snapshot |
| Divine Orb | Variable; check the current exchange ratio |
| Currency Exchange Gold Fee | 250 Gold per Orb of Annulment received |
| Stack Size | 20 |
For the most accurate price, check the Currency Exchange in your league or consult current trading information through poe.ninja, PoEDB, or the official Path of Exile Trade website.
Always select the correct league and platform before comparing prices.
9. Orb of Annulment vs. Orb of Scouring
Both currencies remove modifiers, but they serve different crafting purposes.
| Feature | Orb of Annulment | Orb of Scouring |
|---|---|---|
| Effect | Removes one eligible explicit modifier | Removes all removable modifiers |
| Changes Item Rarity | No | Usually downgrades the item to normal rarity |
| Best Use | Removing a particular unwanted affix with some risk | Resetting an item or preparing a new crafting base |
| Typical Crafting Risk | May remove a valuable modifier | Removes multiple modifiers |
If you want to preserve most of an item’s existing modifiers, an Orb of Annulment is generally more appropriate.
If you want to remove all removable modifiers and start crafting again, an Orb of Scouring is generally the better choice.
Both currencies can interact with relevant metamods, and neither can remove a permanently fractured modifier.
10. How to Remove Crafted Modifiers Without an Orb of Annulment
If your goal is to remove a normal Crafting Bench modifier, you usually do not need to risk an Orb of Annulment.
The Crafting Bench provides the following option:

Remove Crafted Mods — Cost: 1 Orb of Scouring
This option removes eligible crafted modifiers without randomly removing a valuable natural affix.
To use it:
- Open your Crafting Bench.
- Place the item into the crafting interface.
- Select Remove Crafted Mods.
- Pay the required Orb of Scouring.
- Inspect the item before continuing your crafting process.
Keep in mind that fractured crafted modifiers and items with special restrictions may not be compatible with this option.
Crafting Tip: When the unwanted modifier is a removable bench-crafted affix, use the Crafting Bench instead of gambling with an Orb of Annulment.
11. Orb of Annulment vs. Eldritch Orb of Annulment
These two currencies perform related but different functions.
| Feature | Orb of Annulment | Eldritch Orb of Annulment |
|---|---|---|
| Effect | Removes one random eligible modifier | Removes a prefix or suffix according to Eldritch dominance |
| Item Requirements | Magic or rare item | Compatible magic or rare item with Eldritch dominance |
| Targeting | Random among eligible modifiers | Targets the eligible prefix or suffix pool |
| Best Use | General-purpose crafting | More controlled Eldritch crafting |
For an Eldritch Orb of Annulment:
- Searing Exarch dominant: Removes a prefix modifier.
- Eater of Worlds dominant: Removes a suffix modifier.
If the Eldritch implicits are of equal tier, neither influence is dominant, so the required dominance condition is not satisfied.
Eldritch Orbs of Annulment are especially useful for crafting compatible body armour, helmets, gloves, and boots.
Unlike a regular Orb of Annulment, an Eldritch Orb of Annulment provides control over whether the removed modifier comes from the prefix or suffix pool.
12. Special Interactions and Important Limitations
Can an Orb of Annulment Remove Implicit Modifiers?
No. A regular Orb of Annulment removes eligible explicit modifiers, not ordinary implicit modifiers.
It also does not directly remove enchantments or permanently fractured modifiers.
Can an Orb of Annulment Remove Crafted Mods?
Yes. Eligible Crafting Bench modifiers can be removed by an Orb of Annulment.
However, if you specifically want to remove a removable crafted modifier, the Crafting Bench is normally the safer choice.
Can an Orb of Annulment Remove Veiled Modifiers?
Eligible veiled or unveiled explicit modifiers can be affected by an annulment, subject to the normal item restrictions and applicable crafting protection.
Do not assume an unveiled modifier has the same status as a removable Crafting Bench modifier.
Can an Orb of Annulment Be Used on Corrupted Items?
No. Ordinary Orbs of Annulment cannot be used to modify corrupted items.
Corrupted crafting requires specialized mechanics or currencies. For example, a Tainted Exalted Orb can unpredictably add or remove a modifier on a corrupted rare item.
Do Catalysts Affect Orb of Annulment Odds?
No. Since version 3.15, Catalyst quality no longer changes the probability of removing related modifiers with an Orb of Annulment.
Older guides describing Catalyst quality as protection against annulment are outdated.
Does an Orb of Annulment Always Remove Architect Modifiers First?
No such guaranteed priority should be assumed.
Some historical guides describe unusual interactions involving Incursion Architect modifiers, but these should not be relied upon as a current crafting guarantee.
Plan crafting decisions around the current modifier rules and applicable protection mechanics rather than assuming a particular Incursion modifier will always be selected.
13. Is Using an Orb of Annulment Worth It?
An Orb of Annulment is most valuable when the potential improvement outweighs the risk of losing an important modifier.
It may be worth using when:
- An item is nearly perfect but contains one undesirable modifier.
- Removing that modifier would create an important crafting opportunity.
- A fractured modifier protects the most valuable affix.
- Metamods can protect critical prefixes or suffixes.
- The cost of replacing the item is relatively low.
- A successful outcome would substantially increase the item’s usefulness or market value.
It may be better to avoid an annulment when:
- The item contains several extremely valuable, unprotected modifiers.
- The probability of removing the unwanted affix is very low.
- A cheaper and safer crafting method exists.
- The item would be expensive or difficult to replace.
For high-value equipment, calculate the annulment probability and compare the expected crafting cost with the price of buying an already-finished item.
14. Orb of Annulment FAQ
How rare is an Orb of Annulment?
An Orb of Annulment is an uncommon currency drop. It enters the drop pool at level 35 and can be obtained through general currency drops, divination cards, or trading. There is no reliable universal drop-rate percentage for every farming situation.
Can I choose which modifier an Orb of Annulment removes?
Not directly. It randomly selects an eligible modifier. However, fractured modifiers and applicable metamods can restrict the possible outcomes.
Can an Orb of Annulment remove the last modifier on an item?
Yes. An Orb of Annulment can remove the last eligible explicit modifier from an applicable item without automatically downgrading its rarity.
Are Orbs of Annulment still available after Harbinger removal?
Yes. Orbs of Annulment remain available through the core currency drop pool and other acquisition methods. The removal of Harbingers in version 3.28 does not mean Orbs of Annulment themselves were removed.
Can I still farm Annulment Shards?
No standard current farming method exists for new Annulment Shards because they are drop-disabled. Existing shards may still be combined into full Orbs of Annulment.
What is the best way to farm Orbs of Annulment in SSF?
Focus on efficient mapping, currency rewards, and available divination card sources such as The Seeker. Since direct drops are random, progressing through profitable endgame content is generally more practical than expecting a fixed number of annulments from a particular encounter.
What is the fastest way to get Orbs of Annulment in a trade league?
For players who already have enough tradeable currency, the in-game Currency Exchange through Faustus is usually one of the most convenient options.
How many Annulment Shards make one Orb of Annulment?
Twenty Annulment Shards combine into one Orb of Annulment.
What is the difference between an Orb of Annulment and a Fracturing Orb?
An Orb of Annulment removes an eligible modifier. A Fracturing Orb permanently locks a randomly selected modifier on an eligible rare item with at least four modifiers.
These currencies are used for different crafting purposes, although they can complement each other in a longer crafting process.
