By default, characters can accumulate a maximum of three charges of each type. This limit can be raised or lowered with certain passive skills and equipment. If the character would gain a charge while already at the limit for that type of charge, no additional charge will be gained; however, the duration of all charges of that type will still be reset.
Endurance charges are one of the three charge types. They are associated with strength and represent a temporary increase to the ability to endure pain during combat. They are visualized as glowing red orbs surrounding the character.
The physical damage reduction is effective against hits and non-hits such as bleeding. When reducing damage from hits, it stacks with the damage reduction from armour, so that they are both applied at the same time.
The effects of endurance charges are much more significant on monsters and minions. Player totems can also gain these effects from endurance charges, which are the only charges they can have on themselves.
