PoE Abyss Lich

Abyss Lich Boss

Abyssal Depths always contain one of two Abyssal Liches. Each time the Lich loses 25% of its life, it disappears and a timer of 1 minute and 30 seconds appears. The player must enter a smaller sub-arena to kill the Stygian Spire inside and then return to the Lich’s arena. The timer does not reset between Spire fights, but it is halted once each Spire has been defeated. The players must kill all three Spires in the time provided, or the encounter will end.

  • Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well: It attacks with a slow Flicker Strike that fires projectiles and recovers life, and can disappear to summon monsters.
  • Amanamu, Liege of the Lightless: It occasionally summons stationary Stygian Hearts and fires shards or creates explosive crystals; Amanamu becomes immune to damage if more than two Stygian Hearts are alive at once.

Liches are guaranteed to drop a Stygian Vise and can randomly drop Unique Abyss jewels or one of four Abyss socket-themed Uniques; some items can have a variable roll of Abyss sockets.

The boss spawned depends on the area ID generated: AbyssLeagueBoss (contains Ulaman) and AbyssLeagueBoss2 (contains Amanamu).

The Abyssal Lich is a recurring enemy you'll encounter in Path of Exile's Abyss encounters. Here's a breakdown of what they are and how to deal with them:

What are Abyssal Liches?

  • Abyssal Liches are powerful undead creatures that act as the boss monsters within Abyss depths.
  • Abyss encounters are triggered by entering cracks in the ground that appear throughout your maps.
  • As you delve deeper into the Abyss crack, the difficulty increases, and you'll eventually encounter the Abyssal Lich.

Types of Abyssal Liches:

There are always two possible Abyssal Liches you can encounter:

  • Stygian Lich: This Lich focuses on physical damage and slam attacks.
  • Lex Ejoris Lich: This Lich utilizes elemental spells and area-of-effect damage.

The type of Lich you encounter is random and doesn't affect the overall strategy.

Mechanics:

  • Abyssal Liches have a significant amount of health and deal high damage.
  • They have a unique mechanic where every time they lose 25% of their life, they disappear and teleport to another location within the Abyss depth.
  • After teleporting, they become invulnerable for a short duration before resuming the fight.
  • During this invulnerability phase, a timer appears, giving you a chance to avoid their next attack.

Strategies:

  • High Damage Output: Focus on a character build that can deal high damage quickly to minimize the number of teleport phases the Lich goes through.
  • Movement Skills: Having a reliable movement skill like Flicker Strike or Leap Slam is helpful to dodge the Lich's attacks, especially after it teleports.
  • Defensive Measures: Depending on the Lich you face, prioritize elemental resistances (fire, cold, lightning) if encountering Lex Ejoris, or high physical damage reduction for the Stygian Lich.
  • Life Regeneration or Flasks: Ensure you have sufficient life regeneration or utilize life flasks strategically to sustain yourself throughout the fight.

Rewards:

  • Defeating the Abyssal Lich can grant valuable rewards, including:
    • High-tier loot like unique items and currency.
    • Abyss jewels, which are powerful gems with unique modifiers.

PoE Abyss Changes 3.21

  • Abyssal Depths now always contain a Lich. Because the rate of encountering Abyssal Liches is unchanged, Abyssal Depths are rarer than before.
  • It is now possible for a Stygian Spire to spawn in the place of an Abyssal Trove at the end of an Abyss, which will drop all of the jewels and other items you would normally receive as well as a Stygian Vise.
  • Abyssal Depths can now only appear in level 78 or above areas (previously 70 or above).
  • Abyssal Depths now always spawn at the fourth hole, if they were going to spawn at all, instead of immediately after a single hole.
  • Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well has had their life increased, and can now use their Cleave skill from further away. The speed of the projectiles from their spirit-spending ability has been reduced, though their damage has been increased. They now spawn more geysers, which have had both their damage and duration increased also.
  • Amanamu, Liege of the Lightless’ has had their life increased, and is now more likely to use their Thrust attack, and Mortar Projectiles summoned during the fight now last longer. Amanamu’s channelled projectile attack now deals more damage, though their turn speed when channelling this has been reduced. The health of Stygian Spires and Stygian Hearts spawned in this fight has been increased.
  • Stygian Spires no longer gain a reduced Damage Taken buff upon using their skills. Instead, they now spawn with a reduced Damage Taken buff which tapers off over 5 seconds, and their life has been increased. The thresholds they spawn minions has also been adjusted.
  • The Awakened Depths Atlas Notable Passive no longer causes Abyssal Depths in your Maps to have 100% increased chance to contain a Lich (as that would be silly), and now causes Abysses in your Maps to have 100% increased chance to lead to an Abyssal Depths (previously 50%). This is still a 50% chance in Ruthless.
  • The Lightless Legion Atlas Notable Passive has been renamed to Inspired Darkness. It no longer grants Monster Level, increased number of Magic and Rare Monsters, or increased Pack Size for Abyssal Depths in your Maps. Instead, it now provides “Stygian Spires in your Maps drop Items with +1 to Item Level”.
  • The two small Atlas Passives prior to Inspired Darkness no longer grant “Abyssal Depths in your Maps have 15% increased Pack Size”. Instead, they now provide “Abysses in your Maps that do not lead to an Abyssal Depths have 10% increased chance to lead to a Stygian Spire”.
  • The two small Atlas Passives following Inspired Darkness no longer grant 10% increased Quantity of Items dropped in Abyssal Depths in your Maps. Instead, they now provide “Abysses in your maps have 5% increased chance to lead to an Abyssal Depths” and “Abysses in your Maps that do not lead to an Abyssal Depths have 5% increased chance to lead to a Stygian Spire”.

The Abyssals creep forth by night and by storm. Their eons underground were not a respite, but an amassing, and now they number beyond comprehension.
