 I opened the World Map and ventured out to find historical relics.
When I find one, I can equip an Excavating tool and use Sonar to locate nearby relics.
Using Relic Search where the search signal pulses fastest will let me discover traces of relics.

Objective:

    Bilbrin Forest in West Luterra

  1. Talk to Master of Trade Skills Awella
  2. – Awella
  3. Talk to Awella
    • Receive a Novice Excavating Tool
    • – Awella
  4. Equip a Novice Excavating Tool
    Where Relics might be in the World Map
  5. Head to the Battlebound Plains
    In the Battlebound Plains, press to switch to Trade Skill, and then use Sonar in the Battlebound Plains
  6. Check the Relic Location
    In the Battlebound Plains, press to switch to Trade Skills, and then use Relic Search
  7. Find Relic Traces
    Sonar, and then Relic Search
  8. Find a Tome from digging
