PoE Sigil of Power Guide: How It Works, Stages, Builds, and Gem Levels
Sigil of Power is a utility spell skill gem in Path of Exile that creates a magical circle on the ground. While standing inside the Sigil, you and nearby allies gain added lightning damage. Spending mana within its area increases the Sigil’s stages, strengthening the damage bonus. At maximum stages, enemies inside the area also deal less damage.
Sigil of Power is particularly useful for mana-intensive builds, lightning spellcasters, and characters that can remain in one location during difficult boss encounters.

How Does Sigil of Power Work?
Sigil of Power begins at Stage 1 when you cast it. As you spend mana while standing inside the circle, it gains additional stages, up to a maximum of four.
- Cast Sigil of Power: Place the circle at your character’s position before or during combat.
- Stay within the area: Your character receives the added lightning damage buff while inside the Sigil.
- Spend mana: Using mana-consuming skills or effects increases its stages once the required mana expenditure is reached.
- Reach Stage 4: The Sigil provides its maximum added lightning damage and causes enemies inside the circle to deal less damage.
Only one Sigil of Power can be active at a time. Casting another replaces the previous Sigil.
Sigil of Power Stages Explained
At gem level 20, Sigil of Power grants 7 to 141 added lightning damage per stage. The following table shows its total bonus at each stage:
| Stage | Added Lightning Damage (Level 20) | Defensive Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7 to 141 | No enemy damage reduction |
| 2 | 14 to 282 | No enemy damage reduction |
| 3 | 21 to 423 | No enemy damage reduction |
| 4 | 28 to 564 | Enemies inside deal 19% less damage, plus any applicable quality bonus |
Important: The defensive effect activates only at maximum stages. It is not a permanent reduction to all incoming damage; it affects enemies standing within the fully powered Sigil.
How to Gain Sigil of Power Stages Faster
Each Sigil level has a mana-spending threshold. For example, a level 20 Sigil requires 400 mana spent within its area to gain a stage.
Several mechanics determine how quickly you can charge it:
- Actual mana spending matters: Mana paid for skills contributes toward stage progression.
- Only one stage per skill use: A single skill use cannot advance multiple stages, regardless of how much mana it spends.
- Initial stage: The Sigil starts at Stage 1, and reaching Stage 2 does not require waiting one second after placement.
- Later stages: There must be at least one second between gaining subsequent stages.
- Alternative resources: Paying a skill’s mana cost with Energy Shield through Eldritch Battery does not count as spending mana for Sigil stages.
Using Arcane Cloak with Sigil of Power
Arcane Cloak is a useful companion skill for mana-focused characters because it spends a portion of your current mana when activated.
To use both skills effectively:
- Cast Sigil of Power before engaging the enemy.
- Remain within the Sigil and activate Arcane Cloak when appropriate.
- The mana spent by Arcane Cloak contributes toward Sigil progression.
- Continue using your primary skills to reach and maintain the maximum available Sigil stage during the encounter.
Arcane Cloak’s mana expenditure can be substantial, but one activation cannot advance the Sigil by more than one stage. Also, spending a large amount of mana reduces your available mana pool, so plan around mana recovery and your character’s defenses.
Best Sigil of Power Builds
Sigil of Power is generally most effective in builds that regularly spend significant amounts of mana and can benefit from added lightning damage.
1. Archmage Spellcaster Builds
Mana-stacking spellcasters using Archmage Support on their main damage skill can benefit from Sigil of Power’s added lightning damage and its defensive effect.
Archmage-supported spells can have substantial mana costs, helping power up Sigil of Power while you cast from within the area.
Important: Archmage Support cannot directly support Sigil of Power. The Sigil has the Arcane gem tag, and Archmage Support excludes Arcane skills. Link Archmage to your main compatible damage spell instead.
2. Lightning Spell Builds
Lightning spellcasters can use Sigil of Power to gain additional flat lightning damage during boss fights.
Skills such as Arc or Spark can benefit from the Sigil’s added damage while the character remains inside the area. The actual damage increase depends on the main skill’s mechanics and damage effectiveness.
3. Mana-Intensive Bossing Builds
Sigil of Power works especially well during encounters where enemies remain relatively stationary.
The main advantages are:
- Additional lightning damage that scales with Sigil stages.
- Reduced damage dealt by enemies inside the fully powered Sigil.
- Better opportunities to reach maximum stages through sustained mana expenditure.
The main disadvantage is mobility. Against bosses that move frequently or force you away from the circle, the effective uptime of both bonuses can be significantly lower.
Best Support Gems for Sigil of Power
Since Sigil of Power is primarily a utility skill, useful support gems generally improve its duration, area coverage, availability, or gem level rather than directly increasing damage dealt by the Sigil itself.
| Support Gem | Benefit | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| More Duration Support | Increases the duration of the Sigil, helping maintain its buff during longer encounters. | Excellent for boss fights. |
| Increased Area of Effect Support | Expands the Sigil’s area, making it easier to remain inside and keep enemies within its range. | Excellent for comfort and positioning. |
| Second Wind Support | Provides an additional stored cooldown use for this non-instant skill, but reduces cooldown recovery rate and increases skill cost. | Optional for more flexible recasting. |
| Empower Support | Raises Sigil of Power’s gem level, potentially increasing its lightning damage and defensive bonuses. | Useful for high-investment setups. |
| Enhance Support | Increases gem quality, strengthening its maximum-stage enemy damage reduction effect. | Optional defensive investment. |
Recommended utility setup: Sigil of Power + More Duration Support + Increased Area of Effect Support.
Use additional support gems only if the benefits justify their socket requirements and mana-cost effects.
Second Wind’s extra use does not bypass Sigil of Power’s one-active-Sigil limit. Similarly, raising Sigil’s level increases its mana-spending threshold, so higher levels are not automatically easier to charge.
Sigil of Power Level Effects (Levels 1–40)
The table below lists Sigil of Power’s gem-level scaling. Standard gem progression reaches level 20; higher levels require additional gem-level modifiers.
Added lightning damage values are listed per stage. Enemy damage reduction values represent the maximum-stage effect before gem quality.

| 36 | 96 | — | 64 | 20 to 383 | 1743 | 24% |
| 37 | 97 | — | 64 | 21 to 398 | 1825 | 24% |
| 38 | 98 | — | 64 | 22 to 413 | 1906 | 24% |

| 40 | 100 | — | 64 | 23 to 444 | 2078 | 24% |
Higher gem levels increase the Sigil’s lightning damage and defensive effects, but they also increase the mana expenditure needed to gain stages. Consider whether your build can reliably reach maximum stages before investing heavily in additional gem levels.
Sigil of Power Quality Effects
Sigil of Power’s current quality effect increases its defensive benefit at maximum stages.
| Gem Quality | Additional Enemy Damage Reduction at Maximum Stages |
|---|---|
| 0% | 0% |
| 5% | 1% |
| 10% | 2% |
| 15% | 3% |
| 20% | 4% |
For example, a level 20 Sigil of Power with 20% quality causes enemies standing inside its fully powered area to deal 23% less damage, before considering any other relevant modifiers.
Quality does not currently increase Sigil of Power’s area of effect. That was its pre-3.23 quality bonus.
How to Get Sigil of Power in Path of Exile
Sigil of Power becomes available during Act 4 and can also be acquired through vendors, item drops, and certain random gem rewards.
Quest Reward
Complete Breaking the Seal in Act 4. The gem is offered as a quest reward to:
- Witch
- Templar
Vendor Locations
| Act | Vendor | Requirement | Available Classes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Act 4 | Petarus and Vanja | Complete Breaking the Seal | Witch, Shadow, Templar, Scion |
| Act 6 | Lilly Roth | Complete Fallen from Grace | All classes |
Characters that cannot purchase Sigil of Power from the Act 4 vendor can obtain it from Lilly Roth after completing the required Act 6 quest.
Random Gem Drops and Divination Cards
Sigil of Power has a drop level of 34 and can also appear as an ordinary skill gem drop.
The following divination card sets provide random rewards that may include Sigil of Power:
| Card | Set Size | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| The Cataclysm | 13 | Random corrupted level 21 spell gem |
| The Fox | 6 | Random level 20 gem |
| Gemcutter’s Promise | 3 | Random gem with 20% quality |
| The Void | 1 | Random divination card set reward |
These rewards do not guarantee Sigil of Power. Obtaining the gem from a suitable vendor is generally more straightforward than attempting to farm random gem rewards.
Old Sigil of Power Mechanics That No Longer Apply
Some older Path of Exile guides still describe mechanics that have been removed or changed.
1. Increased Mana Cost in the Sigil
Earlier versions of Sigil of Power increased the mana cost of your skills while you stood inside the area. That modifier was removed in version 3.15.0.
The current gem does not inherently increase your skill mana costs.
2. Alternate Quality Gems
Older guides may refer to:
- Anomalous Sigil of Power
- Divergent Sigil of Power
- Phantasmal Sigil of Power
These alternate quality types were removed in version 3.23.0. They are not obtainable as separate current gem-quality variants.
3. Labyrinth Helmet Enchantments
Sigil of Power previously had Labyrinth helmet enchantments that could improve critical strike chance or reduce the mana required to gain stages.
Labyrinth helmet enchantments are no longer obtainable through the current Labyrinth reward system. Previously enchanted items may still exist in permanent leagues.
Sigil of Power Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sigil of Power worth using?
Yes, for characters that spend enough mana to charge the Sigil and can remain in its area. It is particularly valuable for mana-focused spellcasters and stationary boss encounters. Fast-moving builds may benefit less because maintaining the buff requires suitable positioning.
Does Sigil of Power increase mana costs?
No. The old modifier that increased skill mana costs while inside the Sigil was removed in version 3.15.0. Mana expenditure still determines how quickly the Sigil gains stages.
Does Sigil of Power work with Archmage Support?
Sigil of Power cannot be directly supported by Archmage Support. However, you can use Archmage Support on a separate compatible damage spell while benefiting from Sigil of Power’s buff.
How many stages does Sigil of Power have?
Sigil of Power has a maximum of four stages. It begins at Stage 1 and gains stages as mana is spent within its area, subject to the stage-gain restrictions.
How do I get Sigil of Power to Stage 4 quickly?
Use mana-consuming skills while remaining inside the Sigil. Arcane Cloak is a useful option for mana-based builds because it can spend a large amount of mana. However, each skill use can only advance the Sigil by one stage, and later stage gains are limited by the one-second minimum interval.
Does Sigil of Power reduce damage taken?
Indirectly, yes. At maximum stages, enemies inside the Sigil deal less damage. The effect is applied to qualifying enemies within the area rather than granting unconditional damage reduction to your character everywhere.
Can I have multiple Sigils of Power active?
No. You can have only one active Sigil of Power at a time, even if Second Wind Support provides an additional stored cooldown use.
Does Sigil of Power work with Eldritch Battery?
Sigil of Power requires actual mana expenditure to gain stages. If Eldritch Battery causes your skill costs to be paid with Energy Shield instead of mana, those payments do not contribute toward Sigil progression.
What is the best way to improve Sigil of Power?
For most builds, improving duration and area coverage is a practical starting point. Raising the gem level improves its bonuses, while increasing gem quality improves its maximum-stage defensive effect. The best investment depends on mana spending, positioning, and available sockets.
