Catalysts are currency items in Path of Exile that improve specific modifiers on rings, amulets, and belts by adding a special type of quality. Choosing the right Catalyst can increase your Life, Resistances, Attributes, Damage, Critical Strike modifiers, or other valuable stats.
In PoE 3.29 (Curse of the Allflame), Catalysts are primarily obtained through Ultimatum encounters. Players can also use Catalyst vendor recipes to exchange unwanted Catalysts or recover Catalysts from quality jewellery.
PoE Catalyst Vendor Recipes
There are three important Catalyst vendor recipes in Path of Exile. The most commonly used recipe exchanges three identical Catalysts for one random Catalyst.
| Result | Required Items | Important Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1x Random Catalyst | 3x Catalysts of the same type | Produces a random regular Catalyst. Cannot produce Tainted, Sinistral, or Dextral Catalysts. |
| 1x Catalyst | 1x Normal-rarity ring, amulet, or belt with 20% Catalyst quality | The returned Catalyst matches the jewellery’s quality type. |
| 1x Catalyst | Multiple jewellery items with at least 40% combined Catalyst quality | The items must have the same Catalyst quality type. Different quality types cannot be combined. |
Recipe 1: Three Identical Catalysts for One Random Catalyst
Required items: Three Catalysts of exactly the same type.
Result: One random regular Catalyst.

For example, selling three Imbued Catalysts to a vendor may return a Turbulent Catalyst, Fertile Catalyst, or another regular Catalyst.
- Collect three identical Catalysts.
- Visit any NPC vendor that accepts item sales.
- Place all three Catalysts in the vendor’s selling window.
- Check the offered result and confirm the exchange.
Important: The recipe cannot produce Tainted Catalyst, Sinistral Catalyst, or Dextral Catalyst. The result is random, so repeating the recipe does not guarantee a particular Catalyst.
Recipe 2: Sell One 20% Quality Normal Jewellery Item
A normal-rarity ring, amulet, or belt with 20% Catalyst quality can be sold to a vendor for one Catalyst matching its quality type.
For example, a normal ring with 20% Fertile Catalyst quality can be sold for one Fertile Catalyst.
This recipe is usually inefficient if you must first apply Catalysts to create the required quality. It is more useful when you already have eligible jewellery.
Recipe 3: Sell Jewellery with 40% Combined Quality
You can also sell multiple rings, amulets, or belts whose combined Catalyst quality is at least 40%, provided all the items have the same quality type.
For example, two jewellery items each having 20% Prismatic Catalyst quality can satisfy the recipe.
Items with different Catalyst quality types should not be mixed. The vendor must be able to match a valid group of items for the recipe.
Are Catalyst Vendor Recipes Worth Using?
The three-to-one recipe is mainly useful for converting surplus, low-value Catalysts into random alternatives.
- Use inexpensive Catalysts that you do not need for crafting.
- Check current trade prices before selling valuable Catalysts.
- Do not expect the recipe to generate rare, special Catalysts.
- Compare the value of three input Catalysts with the value of one random result.
Because the exchange consumes three Catalysts to produce only one, selling the original Catalysts directly to other players is often the more economical option.
All PoE Catalyst Types and Effects
Path of Exile has ten regular Catalyst types and three special Catalyst types. Each type has a different purpose.
| Catalyst | Enhanced Modifiers | Recommended Use |
|---|---|---|
| Abrasive Catalyst | Attack | Attack damage, added damage to attacks, and other applicable Attack-tagged modifiers. |
| Accelerating Catalyst | Speed | Attack speed, cast speed, and applicable speed modifiers. |
| Fertile Catalyst | Life and Mana | Maximum Life, Maximum Mana, regeneration, and other applicable resource modifiers. |
| Imbued Catalyst | Caster | Spell damage, cast-related bonuses, and modifiers with the Caster tag. |
| Intrinsic Catalyst | Attributes | Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and applicable combined Attribute modifiers. |
| Noxious Catalyst | Physical and Chaos Damage | Applicable Physical Damage and Chaos Damage modifiers. |
| Prismatic Catalyst | Resistances | Fire, Cold, Lightning, and Chaos Resistance modifiers. |
| Tempering Catalyst | Defences | Armour, Evasion, Energy Shield, and other Defence-tagged modifiers. |
| Turbulent Catalyst | Elemental Damage | Fire, Cold, Lightning, and other Elemental Damage modifiers. |
| Unstable Catalyst | Critical | Critical Strike Chance, Critical Strike Multiplier, and other Critical-tagged modifiers. |
| Tainted Catalyst | Random Quality Type | Applying or modifying Catalyst quality on corrupted jewellery. |
| Sinistral Catalyst | Prefixes | Enhancing prefix modifiers on jewellery. Introduced in 3.28. |
| Dextral Catalyst | Suffixes | Enhancing suffix modifiers on jewellery. Introduced in 3.28. |
Availability note: Sinistral and Dextral Catalysts were introduced as rewards from Ultimatum encounters inside Mirages in version 3.28. The Mirage mechanic did not become core content in 3.29, so that farming method is no longer available in the current challenge league. Existing legacy items may still be found in Standard.
How Do Catalysts Work in Path of Exile?
Catalysts add a special quality type to jewellery. This quality improves the numerical effects of matching explicit and implicit modifiers, depending on their modifier tags.
What Items Can Use Catalysts?
- Rings
- Amulets
- Belts
Catalysts can also be used on eligible unique jewellery. However, ordinary Catalysts cannot be applied directly to corrupted items. Tainted Catalyst is the special option for corrupted jewellery.
How to Apply a Catalyst
- Place the Catalyst and the jewellery in your inventory or accessible stash.
- Right-click the Catalyst.
- Left-click the ring, amulet, or belt you want to improve.
- Repeat until the desired quality is reached, up to the item’s normal maximum.
The standard maximum Catalyst quality is 20%, although certain special item mechanics can create exceptions.
How Much Quality Does One Catalyst Add?
Since PoE version 3.25, the amount of quality granted by a Catalyst to non-unique jewellery depends on the item’s level rather than its rarity.
Lower item-level jewellery generally gains more quality per Catalyst, while high item-level jewellery gains less. Unique jewellery follows separate quality application rules.
The older system of applying 5% quality to normal items, 2% to magic items, and 1% to rare items is outdated and should not be used when calculating Catalyst requirements for current non-unique equipment.
Does Catalyst Quality Increase Modifier Values?
Yes. At 20% quality, a matching modifier generally receives 20% increased effect from the Catalyst quality.
For example:
| Original Modifier | Catalyst | Value at 20% Quality |
|---|---|---|
| +50 to Strength | Intrinsic | +60 to Strength |
| +80 to Maximum Life | Fertile | +96 to Maximum Life |
| +40% to Fire Resistance | Prismatic | +48% to Fire Resistance |
| 30% increased Elemental Damage | Turbulent | 36% increased Elemental Damage |
These are illustrative calculations for modifiers with the appropriate tags. The actual displayed result depends on modifier eligibility and the game’s rounding rules. Small modifier values may not gain a visible increase at every quality breakpoint.
Can You Change Catalyst Quality Types?
Yes. Applying a different Catalyst type replaces the previous quality type and resets its accumulated quality.
For example, if a ring has 20% Fertile Catalyst quality and you apply a Prismatic Catalyst, its Fertile quality is removed. You must then build up the new Prismatic quality.
Tip: Decide which modifiers you want to improve before investing valuable Catalysts. Only one Catalyst quality type can be active on an item at a time.
How to Get and Farm Catalysts in PoE 3.29
In the current 3.29 game version, Ultimatum is the exclusive gameplay reward source for Catalysts. Earlier farming guides based on Metamorph organs, Heist Catalyst chests, Expedition Catalyst chests, or Tujen offers are outdated.
1. Farm Ultimatum Encounters
Ultimatum encounters present successive combat challenges with rewards offered between rounds. Catalysts can appear among these rewards.
For dedicated Catalyst farming, choose Atlas passives and encounter modifiers that support Ultimatum rewards and that your build can survive consistently.
2. Use Ultimatum Scarab of Catalysing
Ultimatum Scarab of Catalysing makes Ultimatum encounters in the area offer only Catalysts as rewards to the map owner.
This is particularly useful for players who want to focus on Catalyst farming instead of receiving a broader selection of Ultimatum rewards.
Before using expensive Scarabs, check whether the expected Catalyst rewards justify the mapping costs.
3. Use Ultimatum Atlas Passives
Several Atlas passives can support Ultimatum farming:
- Brave The Tower: Causes the Ultimatum Boss to drop 10 of a random Catalyst and increases the chance for the final round to contain a boss.
- Prove Yourself Worthy: Gives Ultimatum rewards a chance to be duplicated.
- Face The Ultimatum: Increases the chance for Ultimatum encounters to appear in maps.
Combining these mechanics with reliable encounter completion can make Catalyst farming more consistent. However, the profit depends on current league prices, Scarab costs, map difficulty, and successful completions.
4. Trade with Other Players
If your build requires a particular Catalyst, trading is usually more reliable than trying to obtain it through a random vendor recipe.
Check current market listings and compare bulk prices before purchasing large quantities. Catalyst values change throughout a league.
5. Exchange Unwanted Catalysts
The three-identical-Catalysts vendor recipe provides another option when you have excess low-value Catalysts. However, it should be treated as a random conversion method rather than a guaranteed source of profit.
How to Choose the Best Catalyst for Your Build
The best Catalyst depends on the modifiers already present on your jewellery, not simply on the name or playstyle of your build.
| Your Goal | Recommended Catalyst |
|---|---|
| Increase maximum Life or Mana | Fertile Catalyst |
| Improve Fire, Cold, Lightning, or Chaos Resistance | Prismatic Catalyst |
| Increase Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence | Intrinsic Catalyst |
| Improve Attack-related modifiers | Abrasive Catalyst |
| Improve Caster-related modifiers | Imbued Catalyst |
| Enhance Elemental Damage modifiers | Turbulent Catalyst |
| Improve Physical or Chaos Damage modifiers | Noxious Catalyst |
| Improve Critical Strike modifiers | Unstable Catalyst |
| Improve Speed modifiers | Accelerating Catalyst |
| Improve defensive modifiers | Tempering Catalyst |
| Modify quality on corrupted jewellery | Tainted Catalyst |
For example, if your ring has excellent maximum Life and resistances, you need to decide which stat provides the greatest benefit to your character. Fertile Catalyst improves suitable resource modifiers, while Prismatic Catalyst improves resistance modifiers.
Important Catalyst Crafting Changes
PoE 3.15: Catalyst Quality No Longer Influences Crafting Odds
Before version 3.15, Catalyst quality could influence the chance of adding certain matching modifiers when using specific crafting currency.
This functionality was removed in 3.15. Catalyst quality no longer increases the probability of rolling modifiers with matching tags, and the old quality-consumption rules for those crafting actions no longer apply.
Therefore, applying a Fertile Catalyst before using an Exalted Orb does not make Life modifiers more likely to appear.
PoE 3.23: Catalysts Moved from Metamorph to Ultimatum
Metamorph was removed from the core game in version 3.23, and Ultimatum became the main source of Catalysts. Tainted Catalyst was also introduced in this update.
PoE 3.25: Catalyst Quality Scaling Changed
The amount of quality added to non-unique jewellery became dependent on item level instead of rarity.
PoE 3.28: Two New Catalyst Types
Sinistral Catalyst and Dextral Catalyst were introduced, offering ways to enhance prefix or suffix modifiers on jewellery. They were associated with empowered Ultimatum encounters inside Mirages.
PoE 3.29: Ultimatum Became the Exclusive Catalyst Reward Source
Version 3.29 removed remaining Catalyst rewards from several other league mechanics. Ultimatum is now the primary activity for farming Catalyst drops, and Brave The Tower was changed to provide 10 random Catalysts from the Ultimatum Boss rather than a full stack.
PoE Catalyst FAQ
What is the Catalyst recipe in PoE?
Sell three identical Catalysts to any vendor to receive one random regular Catalyst. Special Catalysts such as Tainted, Sinistral, and Dextral cannot be produced by this recipe.
Can you get Fertile Catalyst from the vendor recipe?
Yes. Fertile Catalyst is one of the possible regular Catalyst results, but the three-to-one recipe does not guarantee it.
Can Catalysts be used on unique items?
Yes. Eligible unique rings, amulets, and belts can receive Catalyst quality. The chosen quality type only improves applicable modifiers.
Can you use Catalysts on corrupted jewellery?
Regular Catalysts cannot be applied to corrupted jewellery. Tainted Catalyst is specifically designed to apply a random Catalyst quality type and amount to corrupted rings, amulets, and belts.
Can you apply multiple Catalyst types to one item?
No. Applying a different Catalyst replaces the previous quality type and resets the old quality.
Do Catalysts increase the chance of rolling better modifiers?
No. Catalyst quality no longer influences modifier-generation probabilities. This functionality was removed in version 3.15.
Does a Catalyst improve every modifier on an item?
No. A Catalyst only improves modifiers that have the appropriate tags or meet the relevant quality-type conditions. Check Advanced Mod Descriptions to identify eligible modifiers.
How do you get Tainted Catalyst?
Tainted Catalyst is a special drop associated with the Trialmaster boss in Ultimatum encounters. It cannot be obtained from the standard three-to-one Catalyst vendor recipe.
Can you still farm Catalysts through Metamorph?
No. Metamorph was removed from the core game in version 3.23. In version 3.29, Ultimatum is the exclusive gameplay reward source for Catalyst drops.
Are Sinistral and Dextral Catalysts available in PoE 3.29?
They were introduced in the 3.28 Mirage league, but Mirage did not become a core mechanic in version 3.29. Their original farming method is no longer available in the current challenge league. Existing items may remain in Standard.
What is the best Catalyst to use?
Choose the Catalyst that improves your most valuable eligible jewellery modifiers. Fertile, Prismatic, and Intrinsic Catalysts are useful for many defensive and attribute-focused builds, while damage-focused builds may benefit from Turbulent, Abrasive, Imbued, Noxious, or Unstable Catalysts.
