The Ancient Orb is a valuable currency item in Path of Exile that reforges a unique piece of equipment into a different unique item of the same item class. It is commonly used for unique-item gambling, especially when players want a chance to obtain expensive belts such as Mageblood or Headhunter.
However, Ancient Orbs have undergone significant changes. In PoE 3.28, Grinding Gear Games removed Harbingers as a core league mechanic, made Ancient Orbs available in the general currency drop pool, and removed Ancient Shards. Patch 3.29 introduced another restriction: an Ancient Orb can no longer reroll an item into a unique with the same name.

These changes make many older Ancient Orb farming guides outdated. This updated guide explains how Ancient Orbs work in PoE 3.29, where to find them, how item level affects the outcome, and whether gambling for Mageblood or Headhunter is worth the currency.
1. What Is an Ancient Orb in Path of Exile?
Ancient Orb
Item type: Currency
Stack size: 20
Drop level: 35
Effect: Reforges unique equipment into a different unique item of the same class.
Unlike an Orb of Chance, which upgrades a normal item to a random rarity, an Ancient Orb starts with an existing unique item and produces another unique item.
For example, applying an Ancient Orb to an eligible unique belt can potentially transform it into another unique belt, including certain highly valuable outcomes.

Ancient Orbs use a weighted selection system. Common unique items are much more likely than extremely rare chase uniques, so valuable results are never guaranteed.
2. How to Use an Ancient Orb
Using an Ancient Orb is straightforward, but choosing the correct starting item matters.
Step-by-step instructions
- Obtain an Ancient Orb through drops, rewards, or trading.
- Acquire an eligible unique item from the equipment category you want to gamble.
- Check the item’s level, especially if you are targeting a high-level unique.
- Right-click the Ancient Orb in your inventory.
- Left-click the unique item to apply it.
- Check the result. If it is not what you want, you can use another Ancient Orb, provided the resulting item remains eligible.
Each Ancient Orb is consumed on use. The item is completely reforged, so its modifiers, base type, sockets and other properties can change.
For example, applying an Ancient Orb to a unique Leather Belt might produce a Heavy Belt, Cloth Belt or another eligible unique belt.
You do not have to find a unique with the exact base type of your desired item. However, the item class, inventory dimensions, item level and eligible unique pool all affect what can be generated.
3. Ancient Orb Item Level and Item Class Requirements
Two of the most important mechanics in Ancient Orb gambling are item level and item class.
3.1 Does item level matter for Ancient Orbs?
Yes. Item level matters when using Ancient Orbs.
Unlike an Orb of Chance, Ancient Orbs consider the item level of the input unique when determining eligible outcomes.
In general, the original item must have an item level at least equal to the target unique’s drop level.
Items below item level 40 are treated as item level 40 for Ancient Orb outcome eligibility. The precise relationship between item level and all possible outcomes has been investigated by the community, and certain details remain based on testing rather than an officially published formula.
For example:
- Mageblood has a drop level of 75.
- Headhunter has a drop level of 75.
- A unique belt with item level 75 or higher satisfies the known item-level requirement for either outcome.
- A low-level belt cannot be assumed to qualify simply because Mageblood requires character level 44 or Headhunter requires character level 40.
The most important distinction is that required character level and drop level are not the same thing.
How to check item level
On PC, hold Alt while hovering over an item to display its advanced information. You can also pick up the item on your cursor and enter /itemlevel in chat.
For high-value Ancient Orb gambling, checking item level before you spend any currency is essential.
3.2 How item classes affect Ancient Orb outcomes
Ancient Orbs preserve the overall equipment class rather than the precise base type.
| Starting equipment | Possible outcome category |
|---|---|
|
Unique Belt |
Another eligible unique Belt |
|
Unique Ring |
Another eligible unique Ring |
|
Unique Amulet |
Another eligible unique Amulet |
|
Unique Helmet |

|
Unique Shield |
Another eligible unique Shield of the same inventory size |
|
Unique Sword |
Another eligible unique Sword in the applicable class and size |
|
Unique Staff |
Another eligible unique Staff or Warstaff in the applicable group and size |
Certain subclasses, including staves and warstaves or daggers and rune daggers, share an Ancient Orb outcome group.
However, changing the exact base type does not mean changing the equipment’s overall inventory dimensions. For example, a 4×2 shield cannot become a shield that occupies a different amount of inventory space.
4. How to Get Mageblood with Ancient Orbs
Mageblood is one of the most desirable unique belts in Path of Exile. Its signature modifier continuously applies the effects of the leftmost two to four Magic Utility Flasks, making it particularly valuable for many endgame builds.
Mageblood belongs to the core unique drop pool, making it an eligible Ancient Orb outcome.

4.2 How to gamble for Mageblood
- Purchase or find an inexpensive, eligible unique belt with item level 75 or higher.
- Obtain a supply of Ancient Orbs.
- Apply one Ancient Orb to the belt.
- Check the resulting unique.
- Continue rerolling if you want to pursue Mageblood.
Because Mageblood has an exceptionally low acquisition probability, the process is highly unpredictable. It is possible to spend hundreds or thousands of Ancient Orbs without obtaining one.
4.3 Can any unique belt turn into Mageblood?
Any applicable unique belt meeting the relevant item-class and item-level requirements can serve as the starting item. You do not specifically need a Heavy Belt.
However, some unusual unique items have restrictions that prevent further modification. Always confirm that your starting belt can actually be rerolled before purchasing it in bulk.
Best tip: Use inexpensive, high-item-level unique belts rather than valuable equipment. The price of your starting items contributes to your total gambling cost.
5. How to Get Headhunter with Ancient Orbs
Headhunter is a unique Leather Belt that grants the modifiers of rare monsters you kill for a duration. It is especially popular for fast mapping builds.
It was originally associated with the Nemesis league, leading to older guides recommending special Nemesis maps.
That requirement is no longer relevant.
5.1 Do you need a Nemesis map for Headhunter?
No. You do not need a Nemesis map to obtain Headhunter with an Ancient Orb.
Headhunter became part of the core unique drop pool following changes introduced in version 3.14.0. The old league-flag requirement was made obsolete.
You can now attempt to roll Headhunter using Ancient Orbs in an ordinary permitted area, such as your hideout.
Zana’s old Nemesis map-device strategy is outdated and should not be used as a current farming recommendation.
5.2 Ancient Orb Headhunter requirements
| Requirement | Details |

|
Specific base type |
Leather Belt not required |
|

5.3 Best strategy for gambling Headhunter
Start with an inexpensive unique belt with item level 75 or higher.
Apply Ancient Orbs one at a time and check the results. Continue only while the potential reward justifies the currency being spent.
Older guides sometimes suggest preparing 300 Ancient Orbs or multiple different unique belts. These are not guaranteed recipes.
You can repeatedly reroll a single eligible unique belt. You do not need ten different starting belts, and spending 300 Ancient Orbs does not guarantee a Headhunter.
5.4 Mageblood vs. Headhunter: Which should you gamble for?
Mageblood and Headhunter are both eligible outcomes when rerolling an appropriate high-level unique belt.
You cannot specifically direct an Ancient Orb toward one instead of the other.
Mageblood is generally attractive for broad build optimization, while Headhunter is especially useful for fast mapping and builds that benefit from stealing rare-monster modifiers.
If you want a particular belt rather than the excitement of gambling, comparing the direct trade price against your expected gambling expenditure is usually more practical.
6. What Unique Items Cannot Be Obtained with Ancient Orbs?
One of the biggest problems with older Ancient Orb guides is that they list valuable unique items without checking whether those items are eligible outcomes.
Ancient Orbs cannot generate most uniques restricted to particular bosses, encounters, reward systems or other special acquisition methods.
Examples of Ancient Orb targets
| Unique item | Can an Ancient Orb generate it? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
|
Mageblood |
Yes |
Core unique belt |
|
Headhunter |
Yes |
Core unique belt |
|
Kalandra’s Touch |
Yes |
Core unique ring |
|
Nimis |
No |
Restricted Uber Eater drop |
|
Ashes of the Stars |
No |
Restricted boss drop |
|
Progenesis |
No |
Unique flasks cannot be rerolled |
|
Voices |
No |
Unique jewels cannot be rerolled |
|
Replica Headhunter |
No |
Restricted Replica unique |
Kalandra’s Touch is a special case: it can be generated through eligible unique-ring gambling, but the resulting mirrored item cannot itself be modified with another Ancient Orb.
Before targeting any expensive unique, check whether it is in the core drop pool and whether its equipment class and other restrictions allow Ancient Orb generation.
7. How to Get Ancient Orbs in PoE 3.29
There are several ways to obtain Ancient Orbs. The biggest change is that you no longer need to farm Harbingers and collect Ancient Shards.
Method 1: Farm Ancient Orbs from regular drops
Since patch 3.28, Ancient Orbs can drop as part of Path of Exile’s core currency pool.
This means they are no longer restricted to Harbinger content.
You can find Ancient Orbs during general gameplay, including campaign progression after the currency’s drop level and endgame mapping.
For consistent currency farming, prioritize content your character can complete efficiently.
Practical strategies include clearing maps quickly, killing large groups of monsters, taking advantage of increased item quantity where appropriate, and choosing encounters that generate substantial rewards.
Ancient Orbs remain relatively uncommon, so general currency farming does not guarantee a specific number per hour.
Method 2: Farm Eater of Worlds altars
Eater of Worlds altars can offer modifiers that cause Eldritch monsters or map bosses to drop Ancient Orbs.
These rewards were explicitly added to the available pool in patch 3.28.
When farming Eater-influenced maps, inspect altar options and select relevant Ancient Orb rewards when they fit your build and farming strategy.
This is one of the more direct ways to target Ancient Orbs when the appropriate altar option appears.
Method 3: Obtain Ancient Orbs from Heist
Heist offers another source of Ancient Orbs.
Patch 3.28 introduced Heist Trinket modifiers that provide a chance for Chaos Orbs or Regal Orbs to drop as Ancient Orbs instead.
For players who enjoy Heist, using an appropriate Trinket can help target this currency through repeated runs.
Check current Heist Trinket listings and modifier availability rather than relying on old Harbinger reward-chest strategies.
Method 4: Obtain Ancient Orbs from Sanctum
Ancient Orbs and Fracturing Orbs were added as possible Sanctum rewards in patch 3.28.
Players who can reliably complete Sanctum encounters can obtain Ancient Orbs as part of the available reward pool.
Because rewards vary, this is not a guaranteed Ancient Orb farm on every run.
Method 5: Obtain Ancient Orbs from Ultimatum
Inscribed Ultimatums can also provide Ancient Orb rewards.
This reward type was enabled in patch 3.28.
If you prefer encounter-based farming, check the reward and difficulty of available Inscribed Ultimatums before deciding whether to run them.
The relevant acquisition changes for methods 2–5 were confirmed in Grinding Gear Games’ official 3.28 patch notes.
Method 6: Buy Ancient Orbs through in-game trading
For players in trade-enabled leagues, buying Ancient Orbs with other in-game currency is often more predictable than trying to find them directly.
You can use Faustus’s Currency Exchange to trade Chaos Orbs, Divine Orbs or other supported currency for Ancient Orbs.
To do this:
- Visit Faustus in an appropriate town or your hideout.
- Open the Currency Exchange.
- Select Ancient Orb under the currency you want.
- Select the currency you are offering.
- Review the exchange ratio and Gold fee.
- Place the order and collect the currency once it is fulfilled.
Faustus can be accessed from Act 6 onward, and the current Currency Exchange fee is 250 Gold per Ancient Orb on the receiving side.
You can also use the Official Path of Exile Trade website for player-to-player trading.
Method 7: Buy Ancient Orbs from U4GM — 6% Off Coupon Z123
For players considering third-party currency marketplaces, U4GM lists Ancient Orbs and other Path of Exile currency for sale.
Visit U4GM’s Path of Exile Currency Store and select the appropriate league and platform.
If you decide to buy PoE Ancient Orbs from U4GM, enter the 6% off coupon code Z123 at checkout. The same promotion is intended for eligible Path of Exile currency purchases, subject to the seller’s current terms.
Important: Buying in-game currency with real money from third-party sellers is considered real-world trading by Grinding Gear Games and can result in account penalties. Check the game’s rules and understand the risks before using such services.
8. Ancient Shard Recipe: Does It Still Work in 3.29?
No. The traditional Ancient Shard recipe is obsolete in the current game.
Before version 3.28, players could combine 20 Ancient Shards to obtain one Ancient Orb.
The previous recipe was:
20 Ancient Shards = 1 Ancient Orb
However, version 3.28 removed Ancient Shards from the obtainable currency pool and deleted existing shards upon login.
Harbingers were also removed as a core league mechanic, while Ancient Orbs themselves became general currency drops.
Consequently, guides telling players to farm Harbinger encounters for Ancient Shards are outdated for PoE 3.29.
There is currently no direct, deterministic vendor recipe that converts a fixed set of ordinary items into an Ancient Orb.
Some random currency rewards from divination cards can still produce Ancient Orbs, but these are not reliable targeted farming methods.
9. Ancient Orb Price and Gambling Odds
9.1 How much is an Ancient Orb worth?
Ancient Orb prices fluctuate with league progression, market demand, available supply and platform.
At the time of this review, PoEDB’s US-realm economy panel displayed approximately 7.33 Chaos Orbs per Ancient Orb. This is a market snapshot, not a guaranteed price in every league or platform.
For current market rates, check the Currency Exchange, official trade listings or PoEDB’s economy information before placing an order.
9.2 What are the odds of getting Mageblood or Headhunter?
Grinding Gear Games does not publish a fixed Ancient Orb success percentage for Mageblood or Headhunter.
Ancient Orb outcomes use rarity-weighted probabilities. Rare unique items are substantially less likely than common alternatives.
The odds also depend on the eligible outcome pool, which can be affected by item class, item level and the current game’s unique-item distribution.
It would therefore be misleading to promise a particular chance such as 1 in 300 or to claim that a fixed number of Ancient Orbs guarantees a specific chase unique.
9.3 Is Ancient Orb gambling profitable?
Consider the cost before gambling.
For example, if one Ancient Orb costs 8 Chaos Orbs:
| Ancient Orbs used | Total cost |
|---|---|
|
10 |
80 Chaos |
|
50 |
400 Chaos |
|
100 |
800 Chaos |
|
300 |
2,400 Chaos |
|
500 |
4,000 Chaos |
|
1,000 |
8,000 Chaos |
These are illustrative calculations based on a hypothetical exchange rate, not a current price quote.
If you buy 500 Ancient Orbs and fail to produce a high-value unique, your losses can be substantial.
You may be able to sell some intermediate outcomes, but the value recovered is unpredictable.
For most players, farming currency and trading directly for a desired unique is the more predictable approach. Ancient Orb gambling is best viewed as a high-risk activity rather than guaranteed profit.
10. Best Ancient Orb Uses and Tips
The best use of an Ancient Orb depends on your budget and objectives.
- Gamble for high-value unique belts. Mageblood and Headhunter are two of the best-known chase outcomes. Use an eligible unique belt with item level 75 or higher.
- Target valuable core-pool uniques in other classes. Rings, amulets, helmets, body armour and other equipment categories may contain desirable results. Check current prices and eligibility before choosing a target.
- Use item-level restrictions strategically. Certain lower-level starting items can reduce the number of eligible outcomes. However, a lower item level can also exclude the valuable item you want.
- Do not reroll valuable crafted or modified equipment. An Ancient Orb replaces most item properties, including quality, sockets, links, influences and enchantments.
- Check the current unique drop pool. Boss-exclusive, restricted and special-acquisition uniques cannot generally be generated with Ancient Orbs.
- Set a gambling budget. Decide how many Ancient Orbs you are willing to spend before starting, and compare the total cost against the direct market price of your target.
11. Ancient Orb FAQ
Can Ancient Orbs roll Mageblood in PoE 3.29?
Yes. Mageblood is part of the core unique drop pool and is an eligible Ancient Orb outcome from the appropriate unique belt category. Use an input belt with item level 75 or higher.
Can Ancient Orbs roll Headhunter without Nemesis?
Yes. The historical Nemesis map requirement is obsolete. You can gamble for Headhunter without using a special Nemesis map modifier.
Does Ancient Orb change item level?
No. Ancient Orbs preserve the original item’s item level. That item level affects which unique items may be generated.
Do Ancient Orbs preserve sockets and links?
No. The socket arrangement and links are rerolled when an Ancient Orb is applied. Do not use an Ancient Orb on an expensive six-linked item if preserving those links is important.
Can Ancient Orbs be used on unique flasks?
No. Ancient Orbs have not been usable on unique flasks since patch 3.20. The same restriction applies to unique jewels and maps.
Can Ancient Orbs produce boss-exclusive uniques?
No. Ancient Orbs generally generate eligible uniques from the core drop pool, not items restricted to specific bosses or other special acquisition methods.
Can Ancient Orbs produce Kalandra’s Touch?
Yes. Kalandra’s Touch is a core-drop unique ring and can be generated from an eligible unique ring. However, the resulting mirrored item cannot subsequently be rerolled.
Do Ancient Orbs still drop from Harbingers?
Harbingers were removed as a core league mechanic in 3.28. Ancient Orbs now belong to the general currency drop pool, and Ancient Shards can no longer be obtained.
Can an Ancient Orb reroll a unique into itself?
No. Patch 3.29 made it impossible for an Ancient Orb to generate a unique item with the same name as the item being rerolled.
What is the best way to get Ancient Orbs quickly?
If you play in a trade-enabled league, the Currency Exchange is generally the most straightforward way to obtain a specific quantity. For self-found farming, regular currency drops, relevant Eater of Worlds altar rewards, Heist, Sanctum and eligible Ultimatum rewards are options.
