- Tips for Helmet Corruption Crafting
Helmet corruptions in Path of Exile can provide powerful bonuses, including +2 to the level of socketed skill gems, additional maximum Power Charges, increased maximum Life, elemental resistances, and Damage over Time Multiplier.
However, corrupting a helmet is risky. A Vaal Orb can add a valuable corruption implicit, change socket colours, reroll the helmet into a rare item, or leave its existing modifiers unchanged while making it Corrupted.
Updated for Path of Exile 3.29: There are 29 standard Vaal Orb corruption implicit modifiers available for helmets in the current modifier database. The 3.29 update introduced several new modifiers and significantly changed socket-colour corruption outcomes.
What Happens When You Corrupt a Helmet?
Using a Vaal Orb on an eligible, uncorrupted helmet produces one of four standard outcomes. Each has an approximately 25% chance, although certain unique items have special corruption mechanics.
- No additional effect: The helmet gains the Corrupted property, but its existing modifiers remain unchanged.
- Change a socket colour: A random white socket becomes a non-white socket (red, green, or blue). If the helmet has no white sockets, this outcome may produce no visible change.
- Reroll into a rare helmet: The item becomes a rare helmet of the same base type, with six random explicit modifiers and randomized sockets and links. This is commonly called “bricking” the item.
- Gain a corrupted implicit: The helmet receives a randomly selected corruption implicit modifier. An existing implicit may be replaced. If multiple implicits are present, one is selected for replacement.
Important: A standard Vaal Orb does not guarantee a corruption implicit. The approximate 25% chance refers to receiving the implicit outcome, not the probability of obtaining a specific modifier such as +1 to Maximum Power Charges.
Important Changes in PoE 3.29
- White sockets are now the default. Gems can be placed in equipment sockets regardless of gem or socket colour.
- Matching socket colours provide a bonus. A gem gains +10% Quality when placed in a red, green, or blue socket matching its colour.
- Vaal Orbs no longer turn sockets white. Their socket-colour outcome now changes one random white socket into a non-white socket.
- New gem-level implicits: +2 to Level of Socketed Physical Gems and +2 to Level of Socketed Chaos Gems.
- New defensive implicits: +2% to maximum Lightning Resistance, +(14-16)% to all Elemental Resistances, and +(19-29)% to Chaos Resistance.
- New utility and damage implicits: +(10-15)% to Damage over Time Multiplier and increased Light Radius.
- Removed modifier: The old (30-40)% increased Burning Damage corruption implicit can no longer be generated on helmets.

Best Helmet Corruptions in Path of Exile
The best helmet corruption depends on your build, socketed skills, and defensive requirements. The following modifiers are particularly useful for the indicated situations.
1. +2 to Level of Socketed Gems
Gem-level corruption modifiers are valuable when a character uses important active skill gems inside the helmet.
- +2 to Socketed Fire Gems: Useful for Fire-tagged skill setups.
- +2 to Socketed Cold Gems: Useful for Cold-tagged damage or utility skills.
- +2 to Socketed Lightning Gems: Useful for Lightning-tagged skill setups.
- +2 to Socketed Physical Gems: A new option introduced in 3.29 for Physical-tagged gems.
- +2 to Socketed Chaos Gems: A new option for Chaos-tagged skill setups.
- +2 to Socketed Minion Gems: Useful for minion-focused helmet setups.
- +2 to Socketed Aura Gems: Useful for Aura-tagged gems socketed in the helmet.
These modifiers affect gems with the matching tags, not every gem in the helmet. For example, a gem must have the relevant Physical tag to benefit from a Physical Gem corruption.
A single gem can have multiple tags, so the same skill may be eligible for several different gem-level corruption modifiers.
2. +1 to Maximum Power Charges
The +1 to Maximum Power Charges implicit is a valuable option for builds that make substantial use of Power Charges.
It is particularly attractive for critical-strike builds or other builds whose damage and utility scale with the number of Power Charges.
In the current modifier database, this corruption implicit has a modifier level of 75 and a spawn weight of 1000.
3. +(10-15)% to Damage over Time Multiplier
Introduced in patch 3.29, this implicit is particularly useful for builds that scale damage over time.
Unlike the removed increased Burning Damage implicit, Damage over Time Multiplier can benefit multiple applicable damage-over-time types rather than being limited to burning damage.
Its value depends on the character’s existing damage-over-time scaling and other modifiers.
4. Increased Maximum Life or Energy Shield
Two broadly useful defensive implicits are:
- (4-6)% increased maximum Life
- (4-6)% increased maximum Energy Shield
Life-based characters generally benefit from the maximum Life modifier, while Energy Shield-focused builds may prefer the Energy Shield option.
The exact improvement depends on the character’s existing increases to Life or Energy Shield.
5. Regenerate (1.6-2)% of Life per Second
This corruption is useful for Life-based characters that benefit from sustained regeneration.
It can be especially attractive for builds requiring continuous recovery or additional protection against sustained damage.
6. +2% to Maximum Lightning Resistance
This new 3.29 corruption implicit increases the character’s maximum Lightning Resistance.
It is useful for defensive setups that prioritize elemental damage mitigation, particularly when the character can make use of the increased resistance cap.
Remember that increasing maximum resistance does not automatically raise current resistance. The character must still have enough Lightning Resistance to benefit from the higher maximum.
7. All Elemental Resistances and Chaos Resistance
Patch 3.29 also introduced two useful resistance implicits:
- +(14-16)% to all Elemental Resistances
- +(19-29)% to Chaos Resistance
These are practical options for characters trying to meet resistance requirements without replacing other important equipment modifiers.
8. Socketed Skill Gems Get a 90% Cost & Reservation Multiplier
This implicit reduces the Cost and Reservation Multiplier of socketed skill gems.
It can be useful when the helmet contains skills with significant costs or reservations. The exact benefit depends on how the affected skills calculate costs and reservation.
How to Corrupt a Helmet in PoE
Method 1: Using a Vaal Orb
- Obtain an uncorrupted helmet you want to improve.
- Finish the important crafting steps before corruption whenever possible.
- Check the helmet’s item level, modifiers, and existing implicits.
- Right-click a Vaal Orb in your inventory.
- Left-click the helmet to corrupt it.
- Inspect the result to see whether you obtained a corruption implicit, socket-colour change, rare reroll, or unchanged stats.
A Vaal Orb is suitable for relatively inexpensive corruption attempts, but each attempt carries the risk of permanently damaging a valuable item’s usefulness.
Method 2: Double Corrupting with the Locus of Corruption
The Locus of Corruption is a Tier 3 Corruption Chamber in the Temple of Atzoatl. Its Corruption Altar can generate two corrupted implicit modifiers on an eligible helmet.
The altar has four standard outcomes, each with approximately a 25% chance:
- Apply two corruption implicit modifiers.
- Turn all white sockets on the item into non-white sockets.
- Reroll the item into a rare item, potentially ruining its original modifiers.
- Destroy the item completely.
Warning: Unlike the standard Vaal Orb outcomes, the Locus of Corruption can completely destroy a helmet. Double corruption is best reserved for situations where the potential reward justifies the risk.
Vaal Orb vs. Locus of Corruption
| Feature | Vaal Orb | Locus of Corruption |
|---|---|---|
| Implicit outcome | One corruption implicit | Two corruption implicits |
| Chance of implicit outcome | Approximately 25% | Approximately 25% |
| Socket-colour outcome in 3.29 | One random white socket becomes non-white | All white sockets become non-white |
| Rare-item reroll | Possible | Possible |
| Can destroy the helmet? | Not as a standard outcome | Yes |
| Recommended use | Standard corruption attempts | High-risk attempts for two powerful implicits |
Can You Modify a Corrupted Helmet?
Corrupted equipment cannot normally be modified using ordinary crafting currency. However, certain exceptions still exist.
- Crafting Bench: Supported crafting recipes can modify sockets, links, and colours on corrupted equipment, generally with additional Vaal Orb costs.
- Tainted Currency: Certain Tainted Currency items can modify corrupted equipment, sometimes with unpredictable results.
- Special unique items: Some unique items have their own exceptions and corruption mechanics.
Normal crafting orbs generally cannot be used to freely reroll a corrupted helmet’s explicit modifiers.
Because corruption limits future crafting options, it is usually safer to complete the helmet’s main crafting work before using a Vaal Orb.
Helmet Corruptions vs. Eldritch Implicit Mods
Corruption implicits and Eldritch implicits are different systems in Path of Exile.
Corruption implicits are obtained through Vaal Orb corruption or related corruption mechanics. They make an item Corrupted and usually restrict further crafting.
Eldritch implicits are associated with the Searing Exarch and Eater of Worlds. Eligible non-unique helmets can receive Eldritch modifiers through Eldritch Ember and Ichor currency.
A helmet with multiple existing implicit modifiers can lose one of them when a new corrupted implicit is generated. Therefore, corrupting a helmet with valuable Eldritch implicits may sacrifice one of those modifiers.
Players should compare the potential corrupted implicit with the value of their existing implicits before taking this risk.
PoE Helmet Corruption FAQ
What is the best helmet corruption in PoE?
There is no single best helmet corruption for every build. +2 to Level of Socketed Gems can be valuable for helmet-based skill setups, +1 to Maximum Power Charges can benefit charge-focused builds, and maximum Life, Energy Shield, or resistance implicits can improve survivability.
How many corruption implicits can a helmet have?
A standard Vaal Orb implicit outcome generates one corruption implicit. The Locus of Corruption can generate two at once. Items with special mechanics or multiple existing implicits may behave differently.
Can a Vaal Orb give +2 to Socketed Physical or Chaos Gems?
Yes. Both +2 to Level of Socketed Physical Gems and +2 to Level of Socketed Chaos Gems were introduced as helmet corruption implicits in Path of Exile 3.29.
Can helmets still get increased Burning Damage as a corruption implicit?
No. The old increased Burning Damage helmet corruption implicit was removed from the pool of modifiers that can newly roll in 3.29. The new Damage over Time Multiplier implicit is an alternative for appropriate builds. Previously generated legacy modifiers may still exist in permanent leagues.
Can a helmet get +1 to Maximum Power Charges from corruption?
Yes. The current helmet modifier database lists +1 to Maximum Power Charges as a corruption implicit with modifier level 75 and spawn weight 1000.
Can you corrupt a helmet twice with Vaal Orbs?
Normally, no. Once a helmet is Corrupted, another standard Vaal Orb cannot be used on it. Special unique items and other exceptional mechanics can have different rules.
Can corrupted helmets have four linked sockets?
Yes. Standard helmets can have up to four regular equipment sockets, and those sockets can be linked. Certain Crafting Bench recipes and Tainted Currency can modify sockets or links on eligible corrupted helmets.
The six-link calculations commonly discussed for body armour and two-handed weapons do not apply to standard four-socket helmets.
Does a white socket still let you use any gem in PoE 3.29?
Yes. In fact, the 3.29 socket overhaul allows gems to be placed in equipment sockets regardless of colour. Matching red, green, or blue socket colours now provide an additional +10% Quality bonus to matching gems.
Is Glimpse of Chaos included in the standard helmet corruption list?
No. Glimpse of Chaos has a special corruption modifier pool and unique corruption mechanics. Its possible outcomes should be evaluated separately from the 29 standard helmet implicits above.
Can corrupting a unique helmet transform it into another unique?
Certain unique items have special corruption transformations. For example, Voll’s Vision can transform into Malachai’s Vision. Such transformations are exceptions and are not available to every unique helmet.
Can you remove corruption from a helmet?
No standard crafting method removes the Corrupted property from a helmet. Before corrupting expensive equipment, consider whether the possible reward outweighs the permanent crafting restrictions.
Tips for Helmet Corruption Crafting
- Choose a helmet with strong existing modifiers before corrupting it.
- Check the modifier level and eligible corruption pool when targeting specific implicits.
- Make sure the desired +2 gem-level implicit actually benefits your socketed gems.
- Compare corrupted implicits with any valuable existing Eldritch or Synthesis implicits.
- Remember that the old white-socket corruption strategy changed completely in 3.29.
- Use the Locus of Corruption only when you can afford to lose the helmet.
- For expensive or build-defining helmets, consider purchasing an existing item with the desired corruption instead of gambling on your only copy.
Helmet corruptions can significantly improve a character’s damage, survivability, or skill setup. Understanding the 29 current corruption implicits, their modifier levels, and the risks of Vaal Orb and Locus of Corruption crafting will help you choose the right upgrade for your build.
