Elden Ring Rune Farm Glitch Farming Locations Early Game

Runes are the main currency of Elden Ring. Much like Souls in previous souls titles, Runes act as the XP and purchasing currency at vendors within The Lands Between. Players will lose their Runes upon death, and a "bloodstain" is generated at the place of defeat. Returning to this place and reclaiming your runes will allow you to re-acquire them. If you perish a second time before getting there, the Runes will be lost forever.

Elden Ring Rune Farming Locations

  1. Trolls on the Stormgate (early-game farming): This one's fairly simple, though a little risky for new players. The huge, hairy trolls on the cliffs North of the Stormgate each drop about 1000 Runes when killed, and while they hit hard, they're also very slow. If you can space them out and kill them one at a time, you can pretty effectively build up a good pool of Runes to spend in preparation for bosses like Margit and Godrick.
  2. War for Castle Redmane (early/mid-game farming): The easiest farming spot on this list, in Southern Caelid there's a huge fortress named Castle Redmane. You don't actually need to go inside though - there's fire-wielding knights and monstrous dogs fighting it out in front of the castle, and you can just watch them kill each other while you get Runes automatically. Head to the Impassable Greatbridge Site of Grace, then just ride up the hill and watch them fight. Then you can always ride through and cut down the weaker survivors, earning you roughly 2000-3000 Runes for very little effort.
  3. Party crashing Windmill Village (mid/late-game farming): This is a good one: head to the North coastline of the Altus Plateau and you'll find a surreal, Midsommar-esque village named Dominula, Windmill Village. It's full of dancing locals who only attack once you get too close and drop a lot of Runes. There's a boss at the top called Godskin Apostle, but even before dealing with him, clearing out the locals will get you about 7000 Runes in just a few minutes. Then quickly respawn them and do it over!
  4. Backstabbing at the Haligtree (late-game farming): OK, we've yet to update our map model, but the area is still correct and the principle is still very sound. If you've unlocked the optional Haligtree area, you'll know it's mostly pretty tough. But if you head to the Prayer Room Site of Grace halfway down, then take the door North, you can run down the parapets, backstabbing a lot of enemies who are looking out to sea or just cutting through the rather easy knights and footsoldiers, each of whom drop 2000-3000 Runes each. Some of them even blow themselves up in their attempt to stop you, meaning that a few minutes can earn you 40000 Runes or even more. Just fight your way down and fast travel back to the Prayer Room when you feel your Runes are at risk (we recommend before you have to fight either the two Cleanrot Knights or the Erdtree Avatar, depending on the path you take).

Kill Enemies and Bosses

Throughout the game you will encounter all kinds of Creatures, Enemies, and Bosses who will engage in battle with you. It's mandatory to defeat some of them to complete the Main story of Elden Ring, while other enemies are optional and can be simply avoided. However mandatory or not, Enemies may drop useful Items from simple to powerful items for your build. But the main reward for defeating any creatures is Runes, which are similar to the gathered Souls in the Dark Souls Games. Just like those Souls, all Runes in your possession are dropped upon death. Lost runes can be recovered by returning to the site of your death and retrieving them. However, dying once more before retrieving your lost runes will cause you to lose them forever.

Consumables for Runes

In Elden Ring, certain consumable items can be used to acquire a fixed number of runes. These types of items can be stockpiled and consumed when you are ready to level up. The rune consumables themselves are not lost upon death and can act as a 'bank' for runes, allowing players to save a good amount without fear of losing them. However, once they are consumed, the runes behave in the same manner as runes acquired by defeating enemies.

Elden Ring Rune Glitch

  1. Find the Golden Scarab! This talisman grants a permanent boost to all the Runes you earn for as long as you wear it. It's an essential piece of equipment, but don't worry - we can show you how to get the Elden Ring Golden Scarab at our dedicated page, as well as how to beat the boss fight protecting it.
  2. Shatter the glowing white skulls you see around the landscape. These have little consumable Golden Rune items inside, and while they're only 200 each, eventually you'll have an inventory of dozens.
  3. Keep an eye out for Gold Leaves! A rare, random weather occurrence will sometimes have Gold Leaves falling from the sky like rain (and as far as we know, it only occurs at night). While this is happening, you'll get a minor boost to all the Runes you earn, about 5% or so. That's one of many Elden Ring secrets you might not know about, but can check out here.
  4. The Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot is a fairly rare consumable that you can find around the game, one that boosts your Rune income for a short time when used. Save these for big fights you think you have a good chance of winning.
  5. Like at the Impassable Greatbridge, you'll occasionally come across areas where enemies are fighting with each other. This is always your chance to sit back and effectively let them do the work for you.
  6. If you want a big batch of Runes fast, try looking for early-game bosses you forgot about and are now overlevelled for. Drop a summon sign and wait for people to call you in. The rewards won't be quite as big as when you defeated them yourself but's still a good payout.
  7. Head to a merchant and sell anything you don't need. We don't recommend getting rid of unique items, but the equipment dropped by foot soldiers or the excess consumables earned from crafting are a safe bet if you're not using them.
  8. If you see an enemy with glowing gold eyes, they're a special kind of foe who won't be any tougher, but will nonetheless drop more Runes when killed. Take them down as a priority!

Best Rune Farming Spots Locations

Locations Runes Description
Gatefront Ruins 1300 Very early in your exploration of West Limgrave, you’ll find the Gatefront Ruins. Clear out all the guards (and their little dogs, too) to collect about 1,300 runes. There are two nearby sites of grace — Gatefront to the northwest and Agheel Lake North to the southeast. This is also a great place to practice your stealth and gets even easier if you use your Spirit Ashes.
Stormgate 1300 Immediately to the northwest of the Gatefront Ruins is Stormgate. Through the titular gate, you’ll face off against six or so crossbow-wielding demi-humans and a troll. Clearing all of them out will get you about 1,300 runes — and it’s even easier if you kite the troll around to clear out the demi-humans. This one takes a little practice, though, since you’ll be facing off against a big, angry troll over and over.
Stormhill 5000 When you do get comfortable with killing trolls (for us, it involves a lot of rolling, an upgraded weapon, and bleed damage), head to Stormhill. It’ll a bit of a ride southeast from the Warmaster’s Shack (and down the cliffs), but you’ll find five Trolls wandering the hillside there — and each of them will give you 1,000 runes. A single trip to clear out all five of them will be enough for a level’s worth of runes up to level 30 or so.
Secluded Cell 1438 This one is only available late in your journey through West Limgrave, but just outside of the Secluded Cell site of grace in Stormveil Castle, there’s a Troll and two Exiles. We got 1,210 runes for the Troll, and 114 runes for each of the Exiles. If you have magic, this is a great place to just stand back, cast, and watch the runes accumulate. And maybe the best part: If something goes wrong, and you die, you’re right next to your site of grace.
Fort Faroth(Caelid) 75000 This one’s a bit different, because you can only do it once, but the massive reward makes it worthwhile. Head to the far east side of the map to the red desert area, Caelid. There’s a site of grace near the eastern edge called Fort Faroth. Ride Torrent straight to this site of grace (because this area is very dangerous) and rest as soon as you get there.
To the northwest of the site of grace you’ll see a massive sleeping dragon. Run to the dragon’s tail and start hitting it. The dragon won’t do anything to stop you and there shouldn’t be any enemies in the area to bother. This dragon’s health pool is massive so it’s going to take a very long time to kill, but once you do you’ll be rewarded with a Dragon Heart and 75,000 runes.
Greyoll's Dargonbarrow   Greyoll’s Dragonbarrow is a particularly tough area, meant for the late-game however, as showcased by PowerPyx, you are capable of getting thousands of Runes in just a few minutes.
This method also doesn’t require you to do a lot of fighting, instead breezing past enemies and picking up the Runes in the process. Therefore it is easily the best farming spot on this list.
Zamor   The best Rune farming spot in the endgame can be found in the Zamor Ruins at the Mountaintops of the Giants.
The trick is to start at the Zamor Ruins Site of Grace, at the top of the Rold Lift. You can then run up to the first enemy, kill it, grab 5,000 Runes, and then fast travel back to the Site of Grace and repeat. This will reward you with the biggest chunk of runes in the shortest amount of time after you have beaten the game or when you are close to the end.
Windmill Village   The Windmill Village has a Midsommar vibe as the villagers are all under some kind of spell and merrily dancing, oblivious to your presence. It also means none of them react to your presence until you start attacking, and even then it's only the ones in the same immediate vicinity.
This farming spot is located in Altus Plateau, which you can reach after travelling through Liurnia. As the name suggests, you'll want to look out for windmills to the North of the region.
Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree   This rune farming spot is the hardest to access as you're required to make your way to the Haligtree, a completely optional part of the map not tied to the story path West of the Mountaintops of the Giants.
Just to reach the Haligtree requires opening up a secret path by following the questline for Latenna the Albinauric, and taking on some very tough bosses along the way, but when you reach the city beneath it, Elphael, you've basically reached Farmville Central.
The enemies here drop thousands of runes, even the most basic grunts, and if you've been upgrading your weapon, two or three heavy attacks will be enough to kill them.

Elden Ring rune farm - Fort Faroth dragon

Kill the mother dragon once for 80,000 Runes. Repeatedly farm the babies for 3,500 Runes per dragon.

So you've decided to kill dragon mommy. Okay then, for that, you'll first need to get to Caelid, which is east of Limgrave, the game's opening area. You can find Fort Faroth by taking the road out of Summonwater Village and through the following areas:

  • Northeast to Smoldering Church
  • East-by-southeast to Caelum Ruins
  • South to Caelid Waypoint Ruins
  • East to Sellia Gateway
  • Northeast to Fort Faroth

This path largely follows a designed road, so it's easy enough to stay on target, even as the enemies might not be as helpful. If you're not willing to trek this distance, you can also take a teleporter that rests slightly northeast of the Third Church of Marika. In the map below, the blue markers indicate your on-foot path through Caelid, while the red markers indicate where the teleporter starts (left) and transports you to (right), followed by the shorter, safer path south to the dragons' location outside of Fort Faroth (purple).

Elden Ring rune farm - Fort Faroth dragon

You'll have a few options when deciding how to get to Fort Faroth.

However you get there, a Site of Grace rests right outside the fort, which makes resetting nice and easy should you elect to spare the mother and repeatedly target the offspring instead.

Eventually, you'll slay the dragon and pocket a heavy 80,000 Runes. Her apparent disinterest in defending herself means getting there is the only hard part, though also note that if you elect to target the smaller dragons, they'll be a tough fight for a low-level player.

Runes Needed to Level up

Once you gather a good amount of Runes, you can use them as currency or spend them to level up your character and increase some of the attributes of your choice for your character.

Level Up is available at any Site of Grace after meeting Melina for the first time early on in the game. At the Level Up menu, you can spend runes to increase your main Stats such as Strength, Dexterity and Mind. There are 8 main Stats in Elden Ring that govern various aspects of your character including their ability to wield Armaments, wear Armor or cast Magic Spells. Defensive properties are also influenced by Stats. Improving stats will also increase your Level, which is an overall representation of your Stat growth. The higher your level, the more runes you will need to improve a stat.

Runes are also used to purchase items from Merchants that players may find as the story progresses. Players will be able to buy certain items and as well as trading a variety of goods and resources that have been gathered or are no longer needed in exchange for a certain amount of Runes.

Enemies can occasionally spawn with glowing golden eyes, these enemies give an amount of bonus runes upon being killed. It is unclear what causes enemies to spawn in this state, but is theorized to be related to enemies that have killed a player.
